8GB of soldered RAM with an AMD IGPU that will probably reserve 2GB of the RAM as VRAM by default, yeah no thanks.

I thought iGPUs reserved half of the system RAM for themselves? The ASUS website says you can get an 8GB (16GB maximum) or 16GB configuration (32GB maximum) so I'm guessing this laptop is a single 8GB stick and therefore single channel which will be very bad for performance, especially an iGPU.

      • It's "onboard LPDDR4X" RAM which is an elaborate way for saying that the RAM is soldered, basically. There are larger configurations but you cannot upgrade the RAM after purchase.

      • Also those Vega IGPU's can reserve up to 2GB of VRAM, i find typically with these laptops is that when the laptop has 8GB of RAM, it'll default to using 2GB of the RAM. On 4GB RAM systems it'll default to using 512MB of RAM

Just a correction to the above statements the iGPU RAM allocation is dynamically adjusted. It reserves 512mb and can dynamically adjust up to 2GB.

  • Screen Panel Type:
    IPS-level

So a good TN panel then?

      It's a Ferrari-level Daewoo

    • In the laptop scene IPS doesn't mean anything on budget range. When I check reviews on notebookcheck loads of IPS have the same crap 50% sRGB coverage as TN, similar brightness, similar contrast.

Just to clarify some people's incorrect statements here. IPS is a trademark of LG. Therefore if the panel is made by someone else, like Samsung for example, with PLS technology similar to IPS, they may only state IPS level.

Note the actual specifications below for this Zenbook. Whilst the brightness might not be the best on the first panel, the 100% sRGB colour gamut is much better then what a TN panel can display.

      14.0-inch,FHD (1920 x 1080) 16:9,IPS-level Panel,Anti-glare display,LED Backlit,250nits,sRGB: 100%,Screen-to-body ratio: 90%

      14.0-inch,FHD (1920 x 1080) 16:9,IPS-level Panel,Anti-glare display,LED Backlit,400nits,sRGB: 100%,Screen-to-body ratio: 90%

  • Is it a touch screen one?

  • Just a heads up that these new zenbooks (including this one) don't come with a headphone jack, but they come with a 3.5mm dongle.
