I was looking for a new workstation laptop and noticed that the new Thinkpad P1 Gen 4 is on a steep discount. It was released about a month ago if I'm not mistaken?

If you have a business account, it's even cheaper from Lenovo Pro.

I would recommend getting the following options (which is what I ordered):

4K upgrade (for 600 nit screen)
PCIE 4.0 SSD
2x8GB RAM
A2000 RTX GPU

Total for my config was $4603.01 marked down to $2872.31 incl. GST (~37.5% off) paid via the business portal. If you are using that, the coupon code is SMBJULYDEAL. If on the consumer one, it will be a few % higher

New part list after I realized RTX 3070 can be an option:

  • i7-11850H CPU
  • RTX 3070
  • PCIE 4.0 SSD
  • 8GB RAM (wait for a 2x16GB deal from amazon)
  • WQXGA (2560x1600) screen 400 nits, downgrade from 600 nits 4K to save battery (this is ~50% fewer pixels to drive)

I paid with my Amex, so with the current Lenovo deal it's another $200 off (my custom built spec is due to ship in 5 weeks).

Oh and don't forget cashrewards :)

Edit:

Note that a config with RTX 3070 is better value at $3021 as per comment by @coxymla

The NVIDIA RTX A2000 Laptop GPU or A2000 Mobile is a professional graphics card for mobile workstations. It is based on the GA107 Ampere chip and offers a similar performance to the consumer GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU. It also offers 2,560 CUDA, 20 Raytracing and 80 Tensor cores paired with a 128 Bit memory bus. It is available in different variants from 35 - 95 Watt (TGP) with different clock speeds (and performance). The GPU supports eDP 1.4b to connect the internal monitor and DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 for external connections.

    • Thanks. Why?

      • +3

It used to be that you need Pro level cards for NVENC or FP64 calculations in CAD. The former I think is no longer true with Ampere, cause the new RTX consumer cards have NVENC now.

        https://www.nvidia.com/en-au/studio/compare-gpus/
        https://www.nvidia.com/content/dam/en-zz/Solutions/design-vi…

I think the only nurfs on Nvidia consumer cards these days is 8 bit vs 10 bit video editing, but it's pretty badly documented (perhaps on purpose by Nivida).

Depending on what you are doing, RTX A2000 and 3050Ti are pretty much the same thing (same cuda, rt, tensor cores).

I was actually looking at Dell XPS 15 as well, but the reps at Dell could only go down to $2682 for a similar spec (3050Ti) but with 1920x1200 screen. So I picked Lenovo for the 4k screen + better keyboard for just a little more

        • How are these graphics card at gaming? As well as Photoshop/Lightroom? Thanks mate.

          • @NothingButPoor: These are better suited for work but can game.

            • @vash5: I might sound very stupid here, but what are the work settings require an advanced graphics card?
All I can think of is, Word, Excel, PPT, Python, SQL, PowerBI etc. None of those seems to demand a graphics card.

              • +3

@NothingButPoor: Not a dumb question at all 😊

In your use case i would say you could use a more general build. Nothing there that really requires much grunt. Depending on what you want and how long you would like the machine to last (years).

Work wise as OP said, is normally more geared to industry that uses high demanding performance programs.. CAD, 3D work, Post production video/photos, complex sims and potentially multimedia industry (this can vary largely) just to name a few use cases.
In these cases the graphics cards are turned to work in these environments and while they game, in the same way a gaming card can do workstation application, they dont perform to optimal standards outside their purpose.

The better question is, what are you looking for in a laptop??

Edit: also you usually pay a MUCH higher premium usually for workstation grade equipment. Its built more premium parts that have a lower failure rate.

                • +1

@vash5: Yeah I see, and of course reliability comes at a cost.
Your explanation actually ring the bell that I studied Mechanical Engineering years ago and did a bit of modelling work using SolidWorks and Ansys, in those contexts, graphics card could be important, as when you go finer for the simulation, it takes much longer and more power (fan spinning) to complete.
Thanks for the answer, appreciate it!

  • Which base config did you customise out of the 3?

    • I did the cheapest one with the i7 CPU

  • How does it work? I have $4603.01 as RRP but it only went down to $2991.96 Inc.

    Intel…

    • +1

True.. but the value in the deal makes up for a lack of AMD more than enough

    • +1

      … has Thunderbolt 4 ports.

    • +2

I would have liked an AMD option too when deciding, but 11th gen Intel has closed the gap quite a bit to AMD. It's still behind AMD 5800H in terms of thermal/power performance (and this is what dictates performance in mobile implementations). So my logic was, I'm paying for a AMD 4xxx equivalent chip wrt CPU

There simply wasn't any AMD laptops out at this level of build quality; there are a lot of gaming/portable implementations (e.g. Lenovo Legion), but I could not find any for work use.

Would have preferred this much more than the HP ZBook Firefly G8 my company has recently just bought for my engineering work thou

    • :)

I don't know the ZBook well, would be keen to hear what the complaints about that machine is. Personally i'm not a fan of HP keyboards.

I still use my old Lenovo T420 and T420s from time to time simply cause of their keyboard. My old HP laptops are either in pieces or dutifully holding down pieces of paper somewhere.

If you take the base model and configure the 11850 CPU then you can choose a 3070 GPU, but funnily enough that comes to $3021.

The 11950 model with the 3080 GPU is $3184 which seems like a much better buy.

    • wow nice spot, i'm chatting with Lenovo support now to see if i can still make that upgrade.

didn't realize rtx 3070 was an option

      • +1

update to this, i had to cancel the order and place a new one with RTX 3070 cause they have no way of modifying an order. ended up getting the following, came out to $2,969.02 on LenovoPro (i downgraded to 2560 screen to give RTX3070 more battery juice); 8GB RAM instead of 16GB, just to make it functional while waiting for a 2x16GB deal on amazon

Bear in mind that the GPU's above the A2000 only allow for one SSD to be installed.

          • @Sambo69: Yeah they should have put the one SSD details in the specs clearer instead of the '1' footnote.

I don't really want a 16" but with the specs available and the low weight I went ahead and selected the i9-11950H.

            Upgraded drive from "256GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe Opal2" to "512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe Opal2" for $71 (since 35% off upgrade items too).

            I also upgraded the memory from "1x 16GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200 Non-ECC" to "1x 32GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200 Non-ECC" for $185 (after discount), to keep the extra slot spare.

I probably should have just left drive and memory as lowest option, as I am thinking to go crazy and buy either top of line SSD (assuming they work):
            SAMSUNG 980 PRO 2TB - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08RK2SR23/
            WD_Black SN850 2TB - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08KFRFL8F/

And also extra Crucial 32GB Single DDR4 3200 when on sale:
            https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07ZLC7VNH/

Since only one SSD then I assume I would setup windows so I can load a drive clone tool then clone the internal drive to the future 2TB drive with an enclosure like: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08DNR22Q7/

Then I need to figure out whether I keep the existing drive if any future warranty claim (since it will not have any personal files on it) or sell it. That's on assumption warranty still applies to laptop when changing drives/memory - I am so used to having laptop with no upgrade ability.

If anyone has better advice for the drive/memory upgrades to use (or if I made mistake with my ideas), please let me know. Thanks

            • +1

              @blah-blah: I'm very tempted as well. :)

              Processor : 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-11800H (8C / 16T, 4.6GHz, 24MB)

Can't see the value of going higher for the money?

              Memory : 1x 8GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200 Non-ECC

This is really high latency RAM (CL22 I think). Already have a 32GB 2666Mhz CL15 kit which should be faster than the standard 3200Mhz. Bear in mind that XMP won't work with these so JEDEC timings will be used.

              First Solid State Drive : 256GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 3.0 NVMe Opal2
Hard Drive Total Capacity : 256 GB

Will buy a 1TB PCIe 4.0 drive (probably the WD 850) and already have a 2TB 970 Evo Plus PCIe 3.0 drive for the second slot. (second slot is only PCIe 3.0)

              Display : 16.0" 16:10 WQUXGA (3840x2400) IPS 600nits Anti-reflective, Anti-smudge, 100% Adobe, Low blue light, Dolby Vision, HDR 400, DC dimmimg, 10-point Multi-touch

Thinking this will be worth more for resale in future. People seem to like touch :)

              Graphic Card : NVIDIA® RTX™ A2000 with Max-Q Design, 4GB GDDR6

Highest option and still has 2 x SSD option.

              3Y Onsite upgrade from 1Y Depot/CCI

Don't want to faff around having to post it back to base if there's an issue.

              Total price comes to $3,068.19.

So much less than the equivalent Dell. :) Other option is the new XPS 15 9510…..decisions!

              • +1

@Sambo69: Yeah I was tempted for the XPS 15 9510 too, but had an XPS before and don't like the texture and I think the plastic foot under laptop if gets too hot ends up coming off.

                • +1

@blah-blah: But I do like the look of the XPS! 😅

                • +1

@blah-blah: I'll need to investigate the battery life too. Hope it would be same or better than the XPS 15. Around 10hrs would be ideal.

              • +2

@Sambo69: RAM quality was a consideration for my downgrade to 8GB as well but not because of the CL timing (that impacts AMD more), i'm more worried they will include 1Rx8 chip sticks instead of 1Rx16.

Those cheaper sticks result in a performance hit of up to 20%; so in getting the base config for RAM, i can pick the exact spec i need wrt rank config/timing

For more on this issue, Linus Tech Tips has a good video with test data
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7CO9v9rpOk

                • @crankyjay: Ahh I see. I've got the 2Rx8 modules from HyperX. The HX426S15IB2K2/32 to be specific. Linus only seems to review the 1R modules. From what I have read the 2Rx8 are preferred. But I'll run some benches to make sure once I take delivery.

Did you have a specific make/model you were chasing?

                  • +1

@Sambo69: afaik 2R is only faster if the motherboard and BIOS have rank interleaving as an option, cause 1R/2R would still share the same 64 bit connectors off the CPU and motherboard traces

Generally more rank = lower clock frequency, but it's in the realm of like 5%. I know for desktop builds it's a rule of thumb to pick rank count by the topology of the motherboard RAM trace layout. If T-topology layout, get 2 kits of 1R; if daisy-chain get 1 kit of 2R; but since laptops only have 2 slots slots, 1 per channel, I'm not sure if this rule applies.

For a more in depth look, have a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tySToFdLV2g (one thing to note in this video is that he draws a dual rank DDR4 stick but oversimplifies by saying if you see chiplets on both sides, that's 2R -> this is no longer true with the latest sticks)

Having said that, I'm not specifically looking for 1R or 2R for RAM, as long as it is not 1R of 16bit chiplets. It really will just come down to how cheaply I can get a kit of 2x16GB ram

                    • +1

@crankyjay: By the way, I checked out HX426S15IB2K2/32, it seems pretty good except for 2666Mhz, ideally I'd want 3200Mhz with x8bit chiplets (also realized I typed them reversed in my first comment)

So ranking theoretically isn't too significant, but it's the chiplet choices dictated by the rank config that is significant, which this video does a much better job of explaining

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6SIdxq2yxE

In terms of kits I'm waiting to go on sale, ideally a CT2K16G4SFD832A; Micron/Crucial specifically says this is a 8 bit RAM kit (most likely it is dual rank, i think the picture is just a stock photo)
                      https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct2k16g4sfd832a

        • How did u get the RTX 3070. I can only see the T1200 and A2000 options

          • +1

@giangpham712: You need to select the 11850 processor and the other GPU options will appear.

  • +1

How does one get access to the business portal?

    • +1

you would need an ABN, the rep I was chatting with created one for me when I was browsing the consumer site

My ABN is set up as a Pty Ltd, so not sure if sole trader will work, but worth giving it a go

  • Any one knows what's the refresh rate for the 4k display?

  • It's basically the workstation version of the upcoming X1 Extreme Gen 4. Nice that many of the current gen ThinkPad are moving back to 16:10 screens.

  • Been considering getting a docking station for my 4-year old laptop, or upgrade laptop which may allow connection to 3 externally displays including 1x 4k.

Does anyone know if any of the GPU options will allow for 3 external displays?

    • They all should work for that. You probably want a Thunderbolt dock though.
If you don't care about the GPU performance you could get the base model for $2534

  • Did anyone end up getting the P1? It's got a 5 week wait period, and I can't find any online reviews. The RTX 3080 model looks tempting. Do you guys think XPS 15 9510 is a better buy?

    • XPS is thinner and lighter, but weaker GPU.
I also prefer the ports on the Lenovo.

      • Yea. I still can't find any reviews on the thinkpad p1 gen 4 yet. Still waiting on a genuine review before I pull the trigger on this one. The specs look top notch and hope the vapour chamber handles the rtx 3080 and i9 well.

    • Dell QC is notoriously rubbish. The Lenovo can't possibly be worse and has, better CPU, GPU, better cooling and is cheaper. Seems like a pretty easy decision

    • yes, new waiting period extended to November 2021 - but they said to check again in 2 weeks. They gave me the option to cancel or get a different model.

      • What specs did you go for? Just checking my config and it's saying 6-9days not the 5 weeks number it was.

  • I hope they've fixed the thunderbolt dock issues in the gen4. I've had both the Gen 2 and Gen 3 and if I have any USB devices plugged into the thunderbolt dock the CPU would sometimes throttle down to 0.9Ghz and the USB devices freezes/disconnects. So I'm currently only using the dock to drive 2x 1440p monitors with the USB devices plugged directly into the laptop to avoid throttling issues.

    • +1

Interesting, do you have the power brick connected too? I read that Thunderbolt by itself is not able to deliver enough wattage for things not to throttle

      • Yeah power brick is connected

        • Thanks, fingers crossed they fixed this for Gen 4, I will post back here when mine arrives if I encounter similar issues

          • @crankyjay: When is the expected delivery date for your P1? Is it after 5 or 8 weeks?

            • @Mattdcosta: When I ordered it, it said 5 weeks for shipping estimate, and the rep said delivery will take another additional 10 days.

  • Looks like the coupons are no longer working? I assumed it would be until the end of the month. :(

    • +1

Hmmmm, yeah the coupon didn't have an end date listed. Maybe start a chat with the sales agents, they can probably still match that price given that Dell still has 25% off their XPS 15 line

      • I tried asking for the discount. The sales guy was saying its a new model and he can't reduce more than 200$ from the listed price as its a new model. I pinged them yesterday and I was waiting on some information like the clock speed and tgp of the rtx ( which nvidia says should be mentioned by manufacturer). They said they'll get back to me today and never mentioned the deal will be over. Now they cannot give me yesterday's price. I would've bought it if they gave me the information yesterday itself.

        • Here's hoping that there are some good discounts coming up. I'm not paying what they are asking now the coupon is expired. May end up going to the XPS 9510 if Lenovo don't release new coupons soon.

  • +1

I keep checking the Order Status as I am impatient. I don't think it had any updates when checking previously, but today it has these estimates in the Order Visibility Portal:

Expected to Ship November 15, 2021
Expected to Arrive November 24, 2021

While the Order Details has Delivery days: Ships in 5 weeks*

The * details don't seem to exist e.g. if * means my customisations extend 5 weeks to 17 weeks, lol

In 17 weeks time there's probably better options available and will lose the AMEX offer. May have to cancel if they let me once I double check if November dates are true.

    • +1

Seems to be par for the course for Lenovo judging by reddit posts on the newest models. I wouldn't be happy with waiting that long. As you say, there will probably be better options by November.

Really a shame that Lenovo don't seem to have their production and distribution sorted out for the new models. It's not like the chip shortages and Covid are new events anymore :(

    • +2

My order is updated with expected shipment as 30th Nov and arrival date as 9th Dec. My credit card got charged though. Agree there will be better options if we have to wait for 4.5 months :).

    • +3

Yeah the "ships in 5 weeks" is complete bait and switch BS. My order is also saying shipping in Novemeber now. Why is that only Apple knows how to run their business properly and every other pc manufacturer can't get basic customer service right

    • +1

Did you get the RTX 3070 as well? I just had a look at my order, it also says

      Expected to Ship
      November 15, 2021

      Expected to Arrive
      November 24, 2021

I'm gonna ask Lenovo on Monday, if I have to wait till almost December to get it, it's not worth it.

Also Amex charged me on the 19th when I ordered, it was showing on my card as "pending"; but now that has disappeared. So most likely if this ships November, it will not get the Amex $200 cash back

      • Yeah my pending charge disappeared too, while the available balance of my card still based on the pending charge being there. Yeah would be good if they had option to charge upfront since AMEX offer is "your Card will be charged each time items are shipped. Items must be shipped by 31/08/2021 to be eligible for the offer.".

This is my order/build with some unnecessary upgrades but couldn't be bothered re-ordering at the time of the offer:
        ● 11th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-11950H (8C / 16T, 5.0GHz, 24MB)
        ● 1x 32GB SO-DIMM DDR4-3200 Non-ECC
        ● 512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe Opal2
        ● 16.0" 16:10 WQUXGA (3840x2400) IPS 600nits Anti-reflective, Anti-smudge, 100% Adobe, Low blue light, Dolby Vision, HDR 400, DC dimmimg, 10-point Multi-touch
        ● NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080 with Max-Q Design, 16GB GDDR6

$5,694.00 minus $1,992.90 JULYDEAL at the time being total of $3,701.10

Also found it interesting that they have changed the ordering of the available model columns (unless one model/build has changed). Before the columns were ordered i7, i9 then Xeon. Now they are i7, Xeon then i9.

        • My credit card balance now updated back to normal, so pending charge now fully gone.

I rang about the Nov estimate and on operators ends they saw the same dates for my order and they need a day to look into and get back to me on whether dates are correct.

          • +1

@blah-blah: Received call back today and was advised they have no ETA on part shortage of integrated circuit, so I assume this means a chip they need for the motherboard. I will cancel mine at end of August if still no ETA.

            • @blah-blah: How late can an order be cancelled?

              • @jeffr: I'm not sure sorry and may be best to check with Lenovo directly.

I would assume we would be able to can cancel up until it is shipped and argue about their misleading timeframes if they were to disagree to cancel.

Their website has "5.7) You may cancel your personal computer Product Order if it is not delivered within 30 calendar days."

Amex offer (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637622) has "If your purchase contains items on backorder, you will be given the option to cancel your purchase or select alternate items which can be shipped by 31/08/2021."

I am hoping if not shipped/charged by 31/08/2021 that maybe Lenovo can provide some kind of compensation/credit directly for missing the AMEX offer, but probably slim chance.

Even without the AMEX cashback was still a reasonable offer, so I am going to still keep waiting a bit more unless a better spec'd laptop comes up elsewhere.

I got an i9 3080 4k touch option. Was saying ships in 5 weeks even on payment screen

Ok so I just called Lenovo and they confirmed that there is a "part shortage" and best estimate is November 15th for shipment as noted on the site.

I asked if they know which part is in shortage, and whether I can change to a different GPU to get it faster; the guy on the phone said he doesn't have that detail, but the order cannot be changed anyways.

So I ended up cancelling the order :( by November we'll probably see Ryzen CPUs in the P1 line and the Intel versions will be obsolete.

Bunch of clowns. Why release the laptop now if they can't ship it for 6 months. They obviously know what the stock situation is like
I will keep ine on order for a while to see if the delivery time improves. The price was quite low for such a high spec machine, i don't think we will see it again this low for a while. I would not pin my hopes on any superior Ryzen laptop's being available for purchase in the next few months and unlikely to be in the P1 line at all. Also the 11th gen intel's have comparable performance but use more power, any difference will be small in practice

@qvinto: Seems like Lenovo have removed all options for the P1 Gen 4 except the i9/RTX3080 now. Unbelievable that they would accept orders, take money and then delay shipping for months.

Not a good look at all. Makes me think twice about trusting them with thousands of dollars if their supply chain is so stretched. :(

        • I am in the same boat - any recommendations for an alternative laptop?

Odd…I've just gone back and configured one and it's now saying "Ships in 6-9 days*". But when I try to check out it's Error 500ing on the payment screen. FML lol! :)

  • Been signing in every now and then hoping the dates would improve but now even worse :/
Expected to Ship: December 31, 2021
Expected to Arrive: January 11, 2022

Same, mine moved from Nov 15 to Dec 31. Will probably cancel and not give money to these Aholes

    • Minor Update - My credit card got charged again this morning while the dates still the same when checking order, got excited for a bit thinking maybe it will be on it's way soon. Or maybe it will just sit as pending charge again and drop off again (if they needed to keep the credit card authorisation active or something).

      • Rang them and the charge was exactly one month from first charge, so didn't mean my laptop was shipping. Same issue of delay due to integrated circuit shortage with no ETA available.

My charge also came through today

Positive news, hoping no more updates :)
      Order update:
Expected to Ship: September 17, 2021
Expected to Arrive: September 28, 2021

my order shows the same dates

  • Not to mention that even with Student pricing (the cheapest I could access in AU), the US are way cheaper than us after conversion and GST……although X1E G4 vs P1 G4……same specs works out to be almost $2k cheaper over there than here. Pathetic really. :(

Yet both are shipped from the same factory in china. F**K this company. If you can make do with Mac OS better just to wait and get an ARM Macbook pro once they are released later this year. CPU will be faster and more efficient than the Intel steam engines in these systems and they will be available without the ridiculous 6 months delays and bait and switch sales tactics. The price will also be equivalent anywhere in the world not randomly jacked up to rip us off

I reckon the delays are because of Nvidia's GPUs; I got an X1 at the same time as this P1 and it arrived a couple weeks ago (right as their shipping estimate predicted)

But this business practice of bait and switch is shocking; they should have never put 5 weeks as shipping estimate in the first place for the P1
