Help with Buying a New 65 Inch TV

Hello people,

Long story short, my 3 yrs old Sony Bravia TV has been playing up (booting issues, with the 6 red blinks) from over a month. Sony support tried to help with troubleshooting but that did not work.

Sony asked to send in the receipts to see what they could do. They got back to say that a repair is not viable, but they would provide a discount if we purchased another TV via their website.

At this stage I don't know what that discount is, but since this issue I was thinking of purchasing a non-Sony TV, however, it could have just been that I received a bad unit or something.

Now based on their offer (subject to what discount they might offer), I am looking at the 65 inch models and am interested in the 65inch X90J Full Array LED model.

I am not into gaming, so I am hoping this TV model which falls in the mid range, offers the best value for my viewing habits.

I can see the same model going for much less in Costco than on the Sony website, as per the link, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/635798 (I will try to price match with Sony, based on their discount)

Does anyone have feedback on this model ? or if you suggest any other models (not the OLED models)?

Also, I read in some comments where they said that by buying on the Sony online store, you get extended warranty by default. I am not sure on whether that is true.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Demand a replacement, a TV should last more than 3 years under Australian Consumer Law they are obliged to repair or replace it.

A DISCOUNT IS JUST A WAY TO ROB YOU OF YOUR RIGHTS UNDER AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAW.

Don't accept anything except repair or replacement.

yea what he said… a top $ TV should eat 8+ yrs without trying

    • Check under ACCC website for info on business responsibilities regarding warranties. 3 years seem too short to me and I too think you have a case to insist they honour the warranty. But it all depends on the money spent, years used, etc.

    Thanks guys!

I didn't yet reply to their email but based on your advice, will talk to them and look at a repair or replacement and see how it goes.

  • I love PlayStation but Sony is such a shit company.

Sony is not going to provide you refund.

I had the same issue with 65W850C model and I was offered KD65X9500H for $1600. I refused and quoted ACL and the offer was magically reduced to less than $800. I was eventually offered KD75X9500H for $1000. This was pretty reasonable considering price difference between 65 and 75 inch models was $1000 at all major retailers when I accepted their offer.

    Good luck

    • Thanks for your comment….I am yet to call Sony. Will do it tomorrow and put forward my case respectfully and will see what they can offer me on a new model.

  • Folks, if I am happy with their offer and need to purchase a TV in the 65 inch range, which is the better one between X90J and X95H (which is $400 more).
I am not into gaming but want the TV to be good fast paced movies and sports.

  • A little update.

A guy from Sydney (as per the number) calls up with no idea of the issue but called in to offer us 30% discount. He did not even know that we already sent the copy of receipts neither did he know the age of the TV. He also said that he would free shipping that would normally cost $300-$450. The Sony website currently says, its free shipping for order over $200.

Now, if I look at the 65 inch range X90J it is at $2,295 so at 30% discount, I will still have to fork out around $1600.

I said I was not happy with the offer and I am happy with a repair/replacement or take it up with ACCC. He said they do not have any parts available but will escalate the issue with customer relations and get back to us.

So waiting to see if they come up with any other offer.

Here is what I wrote to them and it got me above offer

I am writing regarding my Sony Bravia KDL-65W850C serial# xxxxx that was purchased brand new on xxxxxx. I have attached a copy of tax invoice as an evidence of purchase and also picture of serial number.

As discussed over the phone, the unit has developed a major fault. After being switched on, it immediately powers off with the red LED indicator light blinking at bottom 6 times, pausing, then blinking 6 times again. This continues endlessly until the TV is unplugged from the wall and plugged back in again. Upon powering it back on, the same problem occurs i.e. it switches off and then red light blinks 6 times. This has rendered the television completely unusable, and this product therefore does not fit for the purpose described. In order to rectify the issue, I have tried to complete soft reset as per instructions provide by your bot chat, however it did not make any difference.

As per our phone discussion this afternoon, you advised the parts are not available and TV is therefore not repaiable. You are offering me 30% discount on retail price of 65KD9500H, however I politely reject your offer.

Under Australian Consumer Law, I am entitled to a reasonable guarantee that a product will perform satisfactorily for an acceptable amount of time, regardless of the manufacturer’s warranty. This is not acceptable that over $2000 television that was purchased brand new, which has been kept in immaculate condition – never moved, never bumped, never dropped would fail within such a short timeframe. The life expectancy of this TV based on the pricing is 8 years, however it has failed just within 4 years. Furthermore, Google search shows that the issue being faced by me is a well-known issue with Sony Bravia TVs, so I am surprised you are fobbing me off rather than taking accountability of your defective manufacturing.

To resolve this problem, I am seeking that Sony organises to either have the unit repaired to full working condition or provide a free replacement. For either solution, Sony will be responsible for full cost including any transport to and from my home.

I understand you will be forwarding this matter to your escalation team. If Sony fails to provide satisfactory resolution, I would consider lodging a formal complaint with ACCC and also initiate a proceeding with the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal. I look forward to hearing from you by xxxxx.

      • Mate your a legend…thanks heaps for sharing the email you sent to Sony. Looks like they are following the same trend with offering me 30%. I will follow your advice and procced with my argument.

        • How is it going mate? Did Sony give you better option?

      • Thanks for this. Great template.

  • Thanks a lot to @sundeepguntu and @Ash-Say for this post and comments. My KD-60X6700E died last week with red light blinking six times. I called on sony today and they told me to email the details including invoice to them and they told me they will arrange a repair. Let's see how it goes.

    • Update. I have been offered following models:
      KD65X75K $1,199.00 AUD
      KD65X80K $1,499.00
      XR65X95J $2,279.40

      Looks like 30% discount.
I want to get XR65X95J , how much should I pay for it?

I had KD 60X6700E that I bought for 950$ on 05/05/2018 which stopped working.

      • Finally got XR65X90K for 800$. Here is the email in case it helps anyone:

        Hi,

        Thank you for your email.

As I mentioned earlier, I should get a free replacement of the comparable model.

        I can see price of KD65X75K at 1695$ :

        https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/televisions/x75k-series/…

However I am inclined towards x90k series as x75k series has got bad reviews and I believe it will not be same experience if not better as my existing faulty TV.

        Price for XR65X90K is 2495$
        I
        https://store.sony.com.au/television-4K-X9000/XR65X90K.html#…

So the difference of price between XR65X90K and KD65X75K is 800$.

I am happy to pay 800$ for XR65X90K including delivery and setup and pickup of faulty tv. If not, I would request for a complete refund so that I can go to market and have freedom to chose any other option.

Please feel free call me on XXXX in case of any questions.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

        Thank you for your help.

        Regards,
        XXX
