Ideas for Table Top for a Standing Desk

Ended up purchasing this from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/635835
Now looking for the desk top idea's
People who previously bought this standing desk, do you mind sharing the pics of your final product, links to where you purchased the good from?
I'm personally interested in solid wood top but don't like my chances so far as I'm finding it hard to find and if I do end up finding one its quite expensive.

Thanks in advance.

  • Solid wood will be expensive depending on a number of factors. If you're looking for something cheaper try local kitchen places for laminate tops. They'll have something for almost any budget.

  • As apsilon said, a laminate table is the cheapest option in general, with options to vary the cost (type of laminate, board edging, etc.)

I was in the market for a table top for my standing desk some months back. I was hoping for a solid table top, too, but you're looking at at least 2-3x the cost of a same-size laminated table depending on the laminate (if commissioning a laminated board, it can get pretty expensive, too).

Quality hardwood in general can get really expensive (more than I expected), and you'd need to find it in the right length, and prepped. I found a place that quoted me about $600 for the wood and $600 for labour (sanded, joined, etc.). I also went and found someone with a single piece of hardwood in my size (~1200$ iirc), but it needed cutting and sanding on top of that. Didn't go further, but it would've been the perfect table.

In the end I reused an old table top I had that was paired with another table for the time being.

  • A piece of plywood and stick some laminate flooring on it.
Nice finish and will be very durable.

  • 180x70 solid top here for $329. Unsure on shipping cost though.

    140x60 here for $170.

    • They look like the Bunnings ones for around $50.

  • I didn't buy one of the standing desks but put a desk together last year.

Depending on the size and whether or not you have access to tools, I bought a solid core door from Bunnings to use as my table top.
You would need to paint it yourself, I just did a vinyl wrap on the top and facing edge.

I think I bought the door for about $100. I don't recall the exact price.
Door was 2040 x 820 x 35, so i was able to trim it down to the size I wanted.

    • What is the door actually made from? It lists Meranti and MDF. Is it Meranti trim over/around MDF?
      .

  • Thinking about getting this one, has anyone used the similar timber?

    Is 600mm width enough?
Also considering to use the whole panel 2200mm instead of cutting and wasting it into either a 1600mm or 1800mm panel?
Will the frame sport the whole panel, while standing? Total weight of panel is ~21kg

Should be fine. Only you can decide if 600mm is deep enough, personally I prefer at least 750. Frame is supposed to support 100kg so 21kg won't be an issue.

      • Yeah, I would like it to be 750mm but not sure if I could source it. Have you had any luck?

My custom desk I had the top done at a local kitchen place as I suggested earlier. Done to my exact size for a perfect fit. I made all the supporting structure, drawers etc.

  • Get this: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/idasen-table-top-brown-20360992…

160x80cm. I have it, it feels as solid as you would need it to feel.

  • Just put a pallet on it.
