No 4k? Seems like a pretty poor updated model from the current version.

    • Seems to be pretty standard hardware update when compared to the previous 2 console generations. We would always get the standard release model and in a couple years they would release the 'Slim' version.
I would like to see an upgrade similar to the PS4 Pro though, so we have some choice about whether we want to play BOTW in 4k/30fps or 1080p/60fps.

Shame the controllers are the same, that drift is a killer..

  • Yep pissed off. Has anyone got a pre order date? I will be buying this as the missus wants my day one switch. I really hope they don't release the 4k SCU when the new Zelda comes out in 1.5 years.

      Same US $349 price.

It's the same hardware and performance. Just 6.2 -> 7" OLED screen, 64GB onboard and LAN jack in the new dock. That's it.

I expect EBGames will have trade-in pre-orders in the morning.

Pretty thankful I won't have yet another gaming expense this year. I rarely use my switch undocked these days and the screen would be completely wasted on me.

  • +5

    Highlights IMO are:

    • wide adjustable stand (how it should have been all along!!)
    • 64GB internal storage (from 32GB)

OLED can workaround by plugging into an OLED TV :D <— can't justify this expense if playing on TV most of the time.

Battery life the same (4.5h-9h) and same spec batteries.

Not much of an "upgrade" tbh.

JB hi-fi just went live with pre orders.

  • +3

Not Switch Pro, just Switch 1.1…

  • Looks like CPU/GPU is exactly the same which means it's not worth an upgrade.
I suppose they could unlock the Tegra X1 so it runs at normal speed (it's underclocked in the original model) but knowing Nintendo I wouldn't count on it.

Dammit, holding off till it does 4k

  • +4

And of course no bluetooth audio.

    • That was an opportunity

  • Feels like a lateral move rather then moving forward from Nintendo. Nothing substantially different beside the OLED screen. Very disappointing.

  • They pulled a reverse Ps Vita.

Will pull the trigger when this is $300.

  • They didn't mention anything about the battery life? I usually play my switch in docked mode, but the few times I've brought it with me on trips, it's lasted 2-3 hours max. Surely a OLED screen would drain the battery faster, and since you can only see said screen in handheld mode, the upgrades seem to be at odds with the target market.
Does anyone know if this new dock/switch are backwards compatible with the existing ones? I surely hope so, as those docks ain't cheap!

Seems like a good little upgrade to the console if you don't already have one, but I can't see anyone jumping out to buy this that already has a switch.
Side note, EB have it for $299 if you trade in your old switch… That is insanity.

    • They didn't mention anything about the battery life?

      Because it hasn't changed.

All accessories seem to be backwards and forwards compatible.

      • When the PS Vita got an upgrade, replacing OLED screen for an LCD and touting much better battery life. So if the battery is the same, but the screen is larger and uses more power.
Does that mean this version will last even less than the 3 hours we're getting on the standard switch?

  • +1

I'm just not sure who this is being marketed towards. Considering that the nearest priced competitor, the PS5 Digital Edition is $70 more, and that the main attraction is the OLED display which appeals to mainly handheld players (who have a much more affordable Switch Lite option), while those who prefer docked play just get a built in LAN port.

Well, we'll see how well it sells in any case.

  • +2

Late to the party, (not a Switch owner) I was waiting to get the rumoured Switch Pro.

I think I may as well save some money and get the current Switch if I can get it for low $300s.

Switch OLED doesn't see worth the extra $200 odd.

  • I was holding out for this to potentially replace my release day switch.

It has been great but the original battery is terrible, and could never justify upgrading even to v2 for the better battery alone.

  • In summary

Getting one for the kids db?

  • Nintendo is freaking again selling electronic garbage, right after E3 The Legend of Zelda System.
even only for the "upgraded" OLED, still 720p in 2021 on a larger screen?
dont mention DCI-P3 , RGB sub pixel, 10bit, 120hz, imput lag, response time? I wonder who the f**k on earth is manufacturing this screen in 2021.

I m so unhappy to see this industry without competition.

FYI Nintendo Switch owners, iPhone 6s is more powerful than the switch soc performance DOCKED.

    • The problem is it'll still be sold out on launch, and probably for a while thereafter at every restock. Why bother innovating when people will buy it anyway. This is applying to more and more markets unfortunately.

  • +2

I am genuinely surprised. I didn't expect Nintendo to release a console that could do 4K, but at least I thought they'd upgrade the internals a little since Switch isn't that powerful.
Plus the rumours about how Nvidia is not going to produce Tegra X1, got me hoping that they'd at least change it to something that could do 1080p at 60fps.

Eh as a person who still has the original Switch with the lower battery life, I still don't think I want to move to OLED version.
I would have loved a more powerful Switch, so that I can play indie games and Nintendo games smoother both docked and on the go.

Pretty lame update for those who have a Switch already. Not bad for first time buyers though!

    • +1

First time buyers can get a second hand switch for $300 or a lite for $250 ish. Can't see how it is worthwhile for non Switch owners either.

      • Your case is valid but I meant if they want to buy new and want the latest model. Similar to the red box revision.

      • +1

Or new for $299 or $322 at the right time

No doubt we'll see a few more sales at this price point soon

  • If this was a dedicated handheld (ala 3DS line) it would be a decent upgrade for existing users to trade in their old handhelds or to justify a purchase as a jump in point if this was your first purchase in the lineup.

But it's not and most people can play the thing on their OLED TVs (if portability isn't their thing) so who knows what Nintendo were thinking.

If you mostly play portable - then this OLED might be a good upgrade

If you play mostly docked - may have to give this a miss

    • Even the 3DS got a more powerful revision halfway through the generation.
This one is just a new screen. Definitely not going to upgrade from my standard Switch

I'm really not sure what's the point of this model is. It's not enough of an upgrade to convince many existing users to purchase another console (that's more expensive might I add).
I guess it could appeal to those with the Switch Lite that were waiting for a bigger upgrade than the standard model.
Doubt it's going to convince many new customers but I suppose all those holding off their purchase for the "Pro" model now know it's unlikely to come anytime soon (if ever) so might get them
