iPhone XR Decent Choice in 2021?

Can't quite afford the iphone 11 or 12 and have a $100 gift card for jbhifi. Never really used android, is this a decent choice? Can spend probably $600 max

Also interested in this. Bought a refurb iphone X for my son and its already developed a screen problem within a few weeks. Should get a refund under warranty and a new XR at around $700 looks a decent option without breaking the bank.

Have bought 3 refurb iphones from reputable sellers and two of them developed problems soon after buying them. Both under warranty so only inconvenience really, but starting to think the savings aren't worth it.

If it's 3rd party refurb device (that is, someone other than Apple fixed it) oftentimes they can do a very shoddy job at putting it back together or they could use non-genuine offbrand parts that have defects.

If you're buying an Apple refurb from marketplaces like Amazon / eBay make sure it's actually a first party refurb not 3rd party.

Iphone XR decent choice in 2021?

Not sure it was even a good choice in 2018 but your budget is your budget.

Sill a good phone, however if you can manage to price match an iPhone 11, I would pay the extra $100 for it.

Over the XR, the 11 has better cameras (front facing and back), processor (A13vs12) and battery.

Can you get an 11 for $800?

Some places are selling demos for 800 and 'As New' for 850. Wouldn't be a stretch to wait for deals/sales to go on for brand new iPhone 11s to go around that price.

Have been using the XR 128gb since it came out and no issues at all. Apps/UI work perfectly fine and quickly, battery life still pretty much intact, camera is pretty decent for lowlight/portrait shots. Happy that I saved in comparison to top of the line iPhones.

My only preference is for better camera zoom quality, but I'm not an "influencer" or avid videographer (aka TikTok try hard) so it's not a dealbreaker.

Besides the upgraded cameras, the iPhones pretty much all work the same.

  • I bought an XR in January and am happy with it. I upgraded from an iphone 6 though lol

If budget is your main concern Apple is not going to do you any favours. You'll always find better value Android phones for all price points.

Wasn't sure in your post whether you said you'd be open to Android or not, but for example a Samsung s20 fe is $700 at jbhifi (should be in your budget if you include your voucher?) and is a better phone than the iphone 11. Could drop to a lower spec phone if $700 is too much and will probably have similar performance to the 11.

    • I am open to android. I was looking at the s20 fe but read a lot of bad reviews about the touchscreen. Would the realme 7 5g be a good alternative? Or the Oppo A74

  • I have a family member who bought an XR, and I helped them set it up etc. I see them regularly and check in with them that it's all still good, they use their phone mainly for the camera and calling, but they are really happy with it. The screen on my 12 does look better, but the XR screen is still good IMO, the cameras are the same as the 12 minus the ultrawide as mentioned above and the battery life is still good. They have no complaints, they did upgrade from a 6 which was too small apparently. As others have mentioned there are "better" android phones out there for the money but it depends what your most comfortable with and what you deem as "better", and how long you hold onto phones for. As I've been quoted alot to replace certain parts on older phones, whereas it seems most places will still repair iPhones 6's.

  • If you enjoy a simple user interface and most settings being decided for you then Apple is the way to go, my mum has the XR and she loves it.

I enjoy having the ability to control a lot more of what goes on on my phone so i've stuck with Android. The galaxy s20 FE i'd say would be a great compromise.

  • The Xr is an excellent choice! My husband got my 2 years old iPhone XR once I upgraded to the 12. I must say that I cannot notice a difference in performance. The screen in the 12 is better, but I can say that I didn’t notice a huge difference. My 18 years old bought an Xr no long ago and loves it. It’s an excellent choice still in 2021 but do try to buy it new. After you can also claim on tax return, according to how much you use it.
