Towbars Tag Vs Hayman Reese

Hey all,

Wifey wants me to get a towbar but all we will really be using it for is bikes.

I have two quotes. One on the other side of Sydney for $800 installed for a Tag Towbar

The other is next to my house for $1300 for a Hayman Reese.

Does the brand matter and have you had experience with either?

Thanks

  • but all we will really be using it for is bikes.

    Car type?
    How many bikes?

Might be more cost effective just to get roof racks.

    • up to 4 by the time the kids get done.

Wifey is adamant about not wanting roof racks due to her shorter stature and not being able to load them

From what i see roof racks and bike racks will cost me closer to 800 bucks anyway.

I got a Hayman Reese for the same reason you did, bikes.

I was in a Rush so got the Hayman Reese.

If the Tag was $500 cheaper, I'd have definitely got the Tag.

    • Yes thats what i am thinking but will need to spend the day driving out west. Just got to consider how much my time is worth.

      • $500 is about 10 hours worth isn’t it?

  • Are they both rated the same? If it’s only for bikes you need to ensure it will take the right amount of ball loading. Eg 10-15kg for rack plus 12-13kg per bike (unless you have Kmart bikes that will weigh more.

Get the cheaper one. Although, I prefer a removable hitch so I can quickly remove the hitch so my shins don’t cop it.

  • Hayman Reece is the more well known brand

Is this a car that can tow 1T+? It might only be for bikes now, but at some point may be used for the full potential of the car. Are both tow bars rated equally, equal tow rating and down-ball?

Also, at that Reece price, check with your vehicle manufacturer for their price for a genuine one, as that's genuine pricing

    • Yes VW quoted 2.5k so this is a bit better.

      • Yeesh that's nuts

  • Are they like for like?

I've found the hayman Reece 50mm square hitch really good for bike racks and other hitches… If the tag brand is the same std fitting, then it's probably fine for a light use case like bike racks.

The 50mm hitch bit doesn’t determine the load rating, the rest of the construction does. The 50mm hitch is also typically used on more heavy duty towbars.

Don’t forget that other brands also do a 50mm square hitch. Calling it a Hayman Reece hitch is a bit like calling all vacuum cleaners a Hoover.

      • Agreed, I mis spoke. I meant that "the 50mm hitch I have on my hayman Reece…"

And load rating wouldn't matter too much if it's for a light application like a few bikes. Yes you can get some heavy bikes, but fairly unlikely to exceed most towball downweight limits unless you're loading up a dirtbike carrier or trailer.

The 250kg ball weight is the most important bit of info for you.

  • I've had my last two towbars installed by Cosmopolitan Towbars in Botany, Sydney. I've saved a heap, and have had several friends do the same.

  • Hmmm I wonder if the BCM needs to be coded for the trailer lights to work.
