Kogan 55" LED TV for $699 (Full HD, 100Hz, SRS Sound)

382

So I just received a newsletter from Kogan with a special offer for being a VIP customer (more than 3 purchases in the last 6 months)

It seems like a pretty incredible deal:
55" Full HD LED TV with PVR & SRS Audio for just $699
http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/55-led-tv-full-hd-srs-pvr/

I can't find the deal on their website and the only way to access it seems to be the link above which was only sent to VIP members.

I had a quick look around and the cheapest 55" LED I could find anywhere else was over $1000 so this seems like a pretty good deal.

Mod: From the page linked, it's a PRE-SALE and limited to only 1 per customer. Expected dispatch date is 27th March 2012 so it could still be a 2 month wait.

Wow! Looks legit. Was thinking of buying the Soniq 55" at JB for $998, but not now :-)

    • +6

Hate to say it but I'd pick a Soniq over Bogan anyday…

      • +1

Never bought a Kogan my self but I went into JB the other day to check out those deals on Soniq TVs, most of them are old school fat non LED models and use a disgusting amount of power, even the JB sales guy admitted that to me.

Those old crappy non-led models are just old as hell crap.

        • +2

If non LED is old school, what is CRT?

      • Yes, I find Soniq to be reliable so far and the quality is not bad given the price.

        • yeah and not to mention the fact that I can just dump the TV at their shop if it turn out to be trash as I have done in the past…

  • +3

    LG panel
    8ms response time
    kogan=fail
    cheap and nasty

    • hey aussman..what do you mean? I just checked a few LED TVs and most of them have 8ms. I noticed computer monitors have lower number than 8ms but most TVs are 8ms. What does the number mean anyway? is it important in a TV?

      • +2

yes for fast moving action a low response time casues motion blur terrible on DSE tvs particularly
Also manufacturers can be deceptive as to how they measure two ways are grey to grey and time rising time falling.
Grey to grey gives substantially lower (faster reading)

        • but doesn't the 100Hz motionmax stuff mean that it is good for action shots?

        • +4

Agree with most but what's the issue it being an LG panel?

        • +1

ps. I've got their 42" TV at home..watch soccer and footy on it all the time and it's much better than my old Samsung. I'll check if it's 8ms when I get home (if I ever get out of the office)

Just like to point out some of the issues with the Kogan TV I have.

      1. Remote Control: frequency interference. Pretty much none of the cheap DVD players will work properly (because the remotes interfere with each other). Same goes for Karaoke machines, Satellite TV machines.
      2. 100Hz - if anything, it was only implemented for digital TV. The 1080p@60Hz was implemented so poorly that you must pick a Blu-Ray player that will let you force the output to 1080p@50Hz (otherwise, the Blu-Ray and DVD playback on the Blu-Ray player becomes quite shocking - it looks like the TV is not able to refresh fast enough).
      3. HDMI and VGA for PC input is poorly implemented. There is no 1:1 mapping. Picture is blurry - combined with the poor implementation of 60Hz. It is a nightmare. I tried software driver horizontal and vertical zooming adjustments… still no good.
      4. Weird noise when using the TV.
      5. So called "Samsung" or "LG" panel… more like the panels those 2 companies reject. The contrast shift (a common "feature" for MVA/PVA panels is SO BAD on the Kogan TV).

Not to mention lack of control of the TV and below average tuner. It came with an A4 paper (no manual, no CD and no firmware upgrade).

PLEASE don't make the mistake I made. I will never buy a Kogan branded product again.

      • +3

Pity! Ruslan Kogan's media exposure tends to show a very tech savvy value- seeking nerdy entrepreneur!
Seems he has more in common with Gerry Harvey than he'd like to admit! hmmm

      • +1

Thanks for the info. I was almost ready to jump the Kogan bandwagon.

      • +1

        Thanks for sharing!

Just my 2c - We have a 46 inch Kogan TV at work here. Looks nice, and does what we need it to. Sure I prefer my Panasonic Plasma at home.

But I am actually impressed by the Kogan, and would consider it. Especially at this price! Just don't expect the best 55 inch tv out there.

NOTE: "AVAILABILITY Expected dispatch date: 27th March 2012"
This is a pre-sale item meaning that it hasn't been manufacture yet so you'll have to wait until 27th March 2012 for it to be shipped out. That is why the price is low. Nevertheless, good price for those who don't mind the wait.

imagine how much interest they can make on the deposits from customers.

      • $770 dollars at 10% would save them less than $10 over 6 weeks

  • Add about $70+ for delivery depending on your postcode

    • +4

even if delivery was $250, this is still the cheapest 55" LED I can find anywhere

      • that is if you take the quality of a product into account. Still good value tho.

      • I know. I just mentioned it because it's not mentioned in the title.

      • +1

        Debatable.

This LED TV could be bought for $888 before xmas.

        http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/plasma-lcd-tvs/led-lcd-tv/his…

        Whirlpool comment -> http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1686693&p…

Thats $888 with free delivery (so -$70 ) with a 3 yr warranty. Also its a Hisense, which as Chinese brands go is the best :)

      • just as an interesting point, postage for me is $256 so I think I might just wait a little while to see everything else come down in price as it inevitably will in 6 weeks time by the time it ships.

          Do you live in Australia?

        • +5

No he doesn't live in Australia. He lives in Tasmania.

        • I live in Queensland. Unfortunately it seems it would be cheaper to have it delivered to a homeless man in Brisbane city, drive there to pick it up and drive back. Along with the tip for the homeless guy.

  • +2

    Holy ___ thats cheap.

    • +7

      moly?

      • digital reception?

(trying to think of any lines Robin used on the Batman TV show that might be appropriate here)

  • Be good if it was 3d and had dlan.

I'd prob still get it if I had room for it. But march ?? Ehh

  • +1

With the magic of SRS technology your TV can now sound just like it's in a tiled echoey room!

  • +2

LOL at all the negative techy comments. It is a 55 inch LED TV for $699 for crying out loud. Did you expect picture quality to rival a Panasonic Plasma? Sheesh.

    • Or the power consumption.

    • +9

You won't understand until you own a kogan product, it is horrible. the speakers on my 42" rattle so much i had to put cardboard down the side of the speakers. My dvd player remote doesn't work. Half the time I turn it on the channels arent there and i have to rescan, its a nightmare.

      • +1

If you have trouble picking up channels it could be due to many antenna ports in the house from the same antenna as each one saps the signal, try unplugging ones not used and see if your channels on the prob tv stay longer.
        This totally fixed my problem.

    • +3

      Also, don't forget…

LED TV - could be edge lit LED backlight. While it makes the TV very thin, the main reason behind it is to save cost.

With Kogan products, you really need to be very cynical. Please read my comment above (remote interference, unable to correct PC/laptop/Android phone/tablet/iPad/Mac/MacBook to the TV properly (so blurry and/or part of the display is not visible on TV).

For a TV, please get a proper branded one.

  • Would like to know of experiences with their 32" $199 TVs that were sold the same way via pre ordering…

    • +1

I bought the 24" Kogan with DVD player ….six months ago for $220.00 deivered in sydney. so far it has been trouble free … For $220.00 I'll be laughing even if it breaks down in 2 years … Chance to upgrade the bedroom TV again ….I don't know why people negative this deal …. you get what you pay for … For most of us "ordinary" people is a good deal.

      • I forgot to mention is Full High definition and LED … and going strong

  • +3

Crazy cheap - unless you're putting together a $15k+ home theatre, this TV will look awesome anywhere in the house for the price.

You're really kidding yourself if you think this isn't a great deal.

    • Thanks Ruslan

      (just kidding)

  • +2

well, Ive had my 46" kogan 100htz led for almost a year now & I must say its great!!!!
it has a great picture, but I agree the speakers are crap, but I just run the audio through my surround
sound stereo & its all SHHHHWEET!!!

I mainly use it for gaming & I really cant fault it overall
Im sorry for those who have had issues, but for the price, you really cant beat it

Is there better tvs out there? there sure are, but they are double the price

to each their own - I have no qualms with kogan & their products

    just my 2 cents
    L8rz

  • its a good deal for those on a budget.. but you end up getting what you pay for.

  • Expected dispatch date: 27th March 2012
    ??? waiting for > 1 1/2 months… !!

  • -1

You can't buy a Ferrari for the price of a Commodore/Falcon.

Far better of with spending the same amount of money on a smaller sized quality screen. e.g. the LG 42" in this thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63567

    • Also the LG comes with a 3 year manufacture warranty. Clearly shows they have faith in their panels.

  • +3

Generally speaking, isn't it better to pay a little more for a good quality product that you will use for thousands of hours, rather than trying to save a couple of (hundred) dollars and always have that niggling feeling of "how much better would my experience be if only I ……….."

    • +2

Yes and no. I forked out $3500 for a 55" LED Samsung when they were the hot stuff. Bought a 42" LCD Soniq for the bedroom. I'd pick the Soniq over it anyday. The colours look alot nicer on the Soniq TV and it was only $399! Now the 55" sits in the lounge room and never gets used apart from news in the morning.

      • +3

remember, people who buy the latest and greatest (computers, mobile phones, cars, and now definitely TVs) and premium brands will always pay what I call "wanker tax".

If you can wait, or go for an "inferior" brand, you can save a lot of money. Yes, the quality will sometimes be worse, but sometimes there will be no noticeable difference. I bought the $300 42 inch HD Soniq from JB HiFi, and absolutely love it. I have no doubt that a Samsung or LG or whatever brand is better, and if I looked at them side by side I would probasbly notice that.

But it's perfectly OK for me, and suits my budget to a T.

My name's shmahoo and I'm an ozbargainer

  • -1

my hot tip is to spend the money on a quality brand it may not be 55" but you will be much, much happier.

  • +2

You should mention that the TV has PVR in the title. Decent deal.

  • My honest opinion - Even if this is not the best quality (I said "if"), this is still a ripper deal.

    Amazing

  • Would've pulled the trigger if I can have it now.

    • -3

OMG - what has happened to the youth of today, you can't wait 6 weeks for this kind of deal ? Amazing -

Yeah I know prices of other things might drop even lower, but this IS a great deal, and for this size screen, they can't go MUCH lower….

      … can they?

      • +1

Want to bet the difference? See you here in 6 weeks.

  • Would you rather own a big Hyundai or a small BMW?

  • I wonder how low Kogan can go with these prices.

  • In my opinion: Kogan products are all about dumbing down peoples' expectations. The products are rubbish. Kogan products are bought with the expectation that you are getting a Samsung equivalent for a bargain price. Wrong. You are getting a piece of garbage.

  • My issue with Kogan is the name. I will be too ashamed to let guests in my house to see the badge name.

    • +2

well then, with a liquid paper pen, just put a curve at the top and one at the bottom of the K and turn it into "Bogan"

      Just a thought

  • How does kogan compare to vivo, braun, etc?

  • -1

You'd have to be stupid to buy Kogan junk. Terrible quality.

  • +1

Everyone please note this is NOT an LG panel as a number of people here have suggested, it is an "AUO" brand whatever that means. If you check these 2 links the model number is different. It looks like the same TV but with a different panel. It could be good but it could be complete rubbish.

very good article from the Age sums it up to a T
    http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/hometech/kogan-tvs--yo…

    • Erm? It says good deal but may not be for you if you prefer to see before you buy?

  • AUO = AU Optronics, make a whole range of panels so unless you crack open the case and get the model number, hard to say what the "quality" is.

If DealExtreme sold TV's, it would be something like this model.

  • Im glad I didn't take up this offer after they started offering their tv with an lg panel for only $160 more

  • hmmm not bad….. but i still lean towards the bigger brand names…
This is a cheap TV, wait time is a bit to long for me though

    • can't you just record what you want to watch and see it after the TV arrives?
