Which JB Hi-Fi Phone Has The Best Resale Value?

I received a home insurance payout from JB hi-fi on a lost mobile phone in the form of gift cards as I didn't want to wait for delivery (at a significant percentage off). They dont have the phone I want at best street price.

They do have a phone at a store 60 minutes drive away return but they're only willing to match to $420.

Best street price is $350 delivered from office works.

What jb hifi mobile phone can I buy with gift card so maybe with my top up that I can sell so I can buy the best phone elsewhere?

I have enough liquidity that I can afford the float so don't have to sell urgently.

UPDATE: clarified that it was a gift card. Clarified driving time.

iPhones will hold their resale better than any other phone IMO.

    • I bought a $400 Huawei and sold it after 2 and a bit years for $150. Also had an iphone 8 that was around $1k new which I struggled to get more than $200 for on selling. Both were in good condition and well looked after.

Had similar experiences selling a used iphone 6s and 7. Didn't get that much for them.

I reckon the iphone resale thing is maybe true for the first year or so, after that not so much.

      • yes, well that's entirely true of most tech. Apple will usually continute to sell the previous year model alongside the new one. I buy a new phone every 12 month and sell the old one. The savings of salary sacrficing and what I get for selling the old one make the upgrade usually free or in some cases I make money out of it.

Sounds like an insurance scam to me

Lol and we're all indirectly paying for it…

The audacity of the OP to make this post!

Not really. There's a police report and the lost phone has lots of valuable or sentimental memories on it.

I looked for cell phone tower location of last place but the telco company has lost my request so I have to wait another five business days.

But I understand you don't have time to check out my background before making baseless allegations.

The price difference between JB hifi and office works is $70. Plus 30 minute travel time one way or 60 minutes.

Versus $420 that JB is lowest willing to go.

If you can do better let me know.

The price difference between JB hifi and office works is $70.

Whatever phone you decide to buy and sell, you're going to lose more than $70 doing it.

Just pay the damn $70 and get it over with. Consider it the charge for losing your old phone and getting a new one.

I know you said they don't have the best price for the phone you want but is the price difference really sufficient to compensate what you set to lose when you resell the replacement phone (even if it's an iPhone) and the time and effort required to do so?

Can you ask for a gift card instead?

        • I used to do a lot of reselling as a poor uni student but nowadays I try to avoid it at all costs.. the hassles and risks are just not worth it

        • With great risk comes great rewards!

Trust goes both ways mate. Most buyers and sellers are good but yes there are a few scammers out there.

Just have to know the auditing and trust process.

By using online pseudonymous marketplaces I was able to save over $200 or over 75% for certain classes of goods/services.

It did take a few hours of R & D and stress but worth it!

Yes huge risks but if a buyer is able to do it two or three times successfully then it will cover the cost of a few losses.

That is all I will say - if you wish to know more look me up or message me. Proof is available if you don't trust a long term ozbargain community member.

  • Geez
    Insurance pay-outs on 'lost' items.

No wonder my premiums are increasing.

    Sell gift card for a 10% discount…

Though that would be the same as 10% off $420 = $378, so is $28 worth the headache of selling something privately…?

You might want to wait till there's a big sale on a certain phone, like Oppo and Realme are often on sales. But if you need it now and have to buy with RRP price, iPhone are by far the winner compare to other brands.

Comparing with $400 Huawei phone doesn't make sense to me, cause if you buy a $1500 Huawei phone then the resale value would be much worse than iPhone
