new ipad is coming in weeks expect a bigger price drop

    • +10
      • +2

just saying. in a month when the ipad 2 is selling for $300-350 dont say you weren't warned and dont have buyers remorse.

        • -5

Mate you would have buyers remorse if you bought the Ipad 2 for $100. Don't say you weren't warned.

        • Giving the negs I guess only apple fanboys are looking at this deal.

        • +10

Even the current iPad 1 are not selling in that price mate.

        • -1

Apple take babysteps? Every electronics manufacturer takes babysteps, it's how they make money.
You think they didn't have access to 'glassesless' 3D technology when they released the first 3D televisions? Think again.

        • +5

          http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iPad

          Rumors to note:
          * Apple are supposedly unveiling the iPad 3 early March (1st week of March apparently).
          * Part leaks suggest a high res retina display, and quad core or dual core A6 processor.
          * The iPad 2 will continue to be sold after the iPad 3 is out, but at a lower price to compete better with the Amazon Kindles and other Android tablets.

i.e. Unless you're really desperate for an iPad 2 or like to waste money (doubt it since you're reading OzBargain), it would make a lot of sense to wait 3 weeks and see what happens, both tech wise and price wise.

This isn't really much of a "bargain" when you think about it.

      • +6

In a year's time the iPad 3S will be out.

        that's a year away, not 3 weeks…

it's quite possible that Apple will drop the price on the new model, so i'd rather wait a few more weeks than make a purchase now…

Why do people need to point out "Apple releases new products periodically" whenever a special is announced, yet they don't do the same for any other manufacturer?

Been to the Canon forums lately ???

        • -1

why would an apple fan go Canon forums?

        • +2

to see what quality 1080p looks like :)

      • Did you have a look at the Android tablet deals pre-xmas by any chance? Many were waiting for the Tegra 3 tablets to come out and bring the price of Tegra 2 tablets down which I don't think really has happened yet…

    • -1

When you see discount chains like BigW start selling iPad2 before iPad3 is out you know that relentless competition from the plethora of Anroid tablets has forced Apples' hand and made them swallow their pride. All the better for consumers but I reckon the iPad2 is still overpriced; the fair price for their 16Gb wi-fi only version should be around the $400 mark atm.

      • Nah… It is probably BigW being smart and try to clear them before the iPad 3 launch.

iPad 2 16GB at $400 mark… that's doubtful because Apple want their proper share of profit. Regarding Android tablets making a big impact… Even though I am an Android supporter, I have to be honest and say the only model of Android tablets that takes a noticable % of market share away from Apple (though still not much) is Amazon Fire. Even with that, Apple still did not see the need to drop price.

The sad reality is that a lot of Android tablet makers are not that keen on releasing new tablets. After so much effort (R&D, getting parts, assemble, marketing etc…), most of them aren't selling well enough so they are not making enough profits (some cannot even break even). As much as they want to fight Apple, losing money is not going to help.

    • +1

I've also read that Apple is expected to keep the iPad 2 around to compete with the $250 Android tablets. (Same way they continue to sell iPhone 3GS and 4 to compete with cheaper Android phones.) If they do expect the iPad 2 to retail for $300-$350.

    • -1

Seems like the majority of the people here are so impatient they can't wait 2-3 months…

  • +8

With the rumor of ipad3 will be announce on March 2012, isn't better to hold of buying ipad2?

  • +4

You know that the next generation of products are arriving soon when they start advertising their old models. Just wait another month if you want a bargain on the iPad 2.

    • You mean start advertising their current models - which you know is the normal function of any business.

I'm not saying you won't see a new iPad in the near future but you also may not - an announcement in 3 weeks could be just that delivery of iPads in Aus. can trial months behind the announcement. When iPad 2 came out iPad 1's dropped $100 from the RRP.. this is already a $60 saving it might not be worth a possible wait for possible savings for what is likely $40 more savings if you have a need for an iPad now.

    • sorry. I meant to vote this, not neg it.
      My bad…

  • I wonder if this could be used in conjunction with this deal:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63346

10% off would make this $444.60

    • 10% off is only for the 15th Feb. Good try.

    • another 9.09% if you go overseas in one month.

    • +1

      Au contraire, mon frère.

A bargain does not exist merely in an instance of time, especially when it comes to Apple and its once a year or twice a year product refresh intervals.

      • I don't think you really understand the mission statement of ozbargain: Our goal is simple — bringing the best deals and bargains in Australia to consumers.

You are talking about a product that doesn't even exist. You don't know what it's going to be called, you don't know its features, you don't even know its price. You can't compare two products when one of those products doesn't even exist.

If someone is looking for an iPad 2 16gb wifi then this is one of the best prices you will find in Australia at this time. People don't always want nor need the latest technology.

        • +2

How does his statement reflect on OzB's mission statement?

He is simply making a valid point that this model may be superseded in the very near future and to keep that in mind when making this purchase.

  • Good price and I'm in the market for a tablet too.

But with all these rumours of iPad 3 (including on All Things D) I think I'll wait till the first week of March… ;)

  • +7

Guys, it's not really the place to argue over the iPad 3.
Point is, this is a great price for the iPad, thanks for Posting it.

    • Point is, this is a great price for the iPad,

chances are, you'll be kicking yourself when Apple drop the price of the Ipad 2 in a few weeks…

  • Gee the 16gb wifi+3G is a bit of a rort eh. Pay an extra $220 for the 3G capability, whereas the difference for the 32gb and 64gb models is $140 and $60 respectively.

    • +3

As I found out with the iPad 1, it's not just 3G that is included. I didn't want 3G in mine (didn't need the extra ongoing cost and preferred a pocket wifi to share across all my devices), so I opted for the wifi-only model. After installing a few navigation and speedometer apps, I discovered it does not have a real GPS built in, and does not have a full featured accelerometer. Some apps refused to run at all. I had to jailbreak it so I could run a bluetooth stack so I could at least talk to an external bluetooth GPS. Had I known at the time and not listened to the unenlightened salesman, I think I would have paid the extra $100 or so, and just not used the inbuilt 3G immediately. It would come in handy if I had to travel and it was the only device I was taking with me, I could swap over the SIM easily enough.

      • Does that mean you use it as a GPS device? I guess if pin-point GPS access is a necessity then yes get the 3G, but somehow I don't see myself mounting the iPad in my car as a GPS device - the iPhone screen is quite adequate for that purpose.

Having said that, if I was getting the 32gb or 64gb I would definitely get the 3G. But the price differential on the 16gb makes it rather annoying.

Funnily enough this lack of proper GPS situation appears to be different to my recently acquired Galaxy Tab 7.7 which seems to have a fully functioning GPS in the wifi only model.

        • +1

I use it as a GPS, yes, but it is also necessary for determining speed, altitude, heading, not just pinpoint position accuracy. It can approximate your position by triangulating itself from known wifi hotspots, but that is not very accurate at times, especially in rural areas. Here in the suburbs, 10km from the heart of Melbourne, it thinks my house is 50-100 metres from where it really is, using just wifi. If it has 3G access, it also triangulates the mobile/cell towers, and uses the GPS for a third fix, returning a very accurate result. I've had it in the car on the windscreen as a nav device too, it's much easier to read than my ipod touch that I usually use. With my ageing eyesight and rough roads you can make it out quite well. But I wanted to set it up as a large speedo (or a heads-up display reflecting off the windscreen for my "crash" camera). The apps I could get to work seem to update speed and position slowly jumping up and down by 5 km/h increments. Not sensitive enough, but probably due to my cheap external bluetooth device.

Its rather annoying when you decide you want to do something, find out that "there's an app for that", but it refuses to run on your device because it is missing some hardware.

        • +1

The GPS is handy even if you don't use it for car navigation. For examples:

          • Geo-Tagging on photos (find out where you took the photos)
          • Near by searches
          • Weather information (auto detect location)

The reason why you need 3G is because the GPS function is included in the 3G chipset. Only nVidia Tegra based CPU has GPS built in to the CPU - so Tegra2/3 based tablets - even the wifi version has GPS. Other CPUs will need a 3G chip.

With Android tablets (Tegra 2 based), you get GPS even on wifi only models, USB hosting (plug an USB stick / portable hard drive to the tablet and you can access files (photos, videos etc…) there. Also, USB keyboard works. Cheaper too.

  • +2

would personally recommend considering the 3G option e.g. useful when away from WIFI - combined with a cheap prepaid sim or alternatively tethered to your mobile 3G is another possibility

    • Same, I wouldn't consider an iPad without 3G. It's proven so handy so many times, especially when electricity goes out which it does all the time here as soon as the wind blows.

      • +4

why not using iPhone's Personal Hotspot? $220 is a big difference!

    • +1

I tether my ipad (non 3g) to my Nokia N8 via joikuspot.
I only have one monthly fee, and my phone has a great data plan for me to use. Very easy and no dramas :)

  • +4

would agree that I would personally wait for the iPad3 unless you are desperate and need one ASAP. I don't think it will be a life and death situation here.

  • This is a great deal. Add another 5% off for Woolies employees and you get yourself a iPad 2 i6gb WiFi for $470!

I was waiting for a Big W or DSE sale to use my old man's discount but pulled the trigger a few weeks ago on a 32gb Wifi Apple refurb for $579 (The 16gb WiFi's were sold out). I'm still happy, but this would have been perfect!

  • +1

Wish I could remember the prices Big W sold the ipad 1 gen for last year when they rolled out the ipad 2's but I cannot - anyone else?

However they were absolute bargains , hundreds off and so I think seeing as it was actually Big W and if your in no real urgent need for an ipad then yep hold off to maybe mid March as they always get them a little after the apple stores do.

Great price if you need one now though ;-)

    • You answer would be around $350 at the cheapest

      more prices here
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/40558

      • Do you remember where was the $350 price?

I could only see $398 and maybe ppl tried a 10% beat at DSE for $360 but no mention of success in that post.
        Cheers

      • Thankyou - yes it was save $200 off each model. cheers

    • They were generally reduced by about $80 accross the board.

    • I bought the 16gb wifi version from JBHiFi for $398 (they price matched on a BigW online advertisment). I'm hoping the iPad 2 will come down to around that.

  • +1

cant see why anyone would consider this anything but a bargain - as someone mentioned especially if you have a woolies staff discount.

Dont expect the ipad3 to be that vital to 50% of the user base. I know my mum probably wouldnt notice a nicer screen, more powerful processor etc.

  • Yes, this is a great iPad, but it is VERY late in its life and will drop in price in a month or so. Those who buy this will end up regretting it.

    • +1

Not if they've used a 28 degrees card to pay for it. :)

      • Isn't that policy an optional extra that u have to pay for?

        • yes. but a true ozbargainer knows how to get around it.

        • +1

          haha please do tell.

Edit: a bit of reading on Whirlpool has enlightened me. In essence pay off the card prior to calculation of the 0.5%. Not bad!

        • good job on getting closer to being a true ozbargainer :D

      • Thanks for telling me about this - I've had a 28 degrees card for years, but never looked at the price protection insurance because I assumed it was as useless as the cba one (21 days only, printed catalogue required ).
6 Months is much better, but now I have to decide if I want price protection for 6 months on the ipad (28 degrees card) or 1 year extra warranty (cba gold card).
        decisions, decisions….

        • er….. 1 year extra warranty…… this only applies you happen to have the worst of luck…. i am not saying that you arent….. but in my case…. i had never have to buy / need an extra manufacturers or 3rd party warranty.

  • You're going to be waiting for ever if you keep waiting for the next Icrap.

They release one every 1.5 years/2 years?

  • +3

In my opinion its more about getting a bargain when it really is a bargain.

Apple tell retailers like Bigw to start clearing stock, Bigw does this and somehow its a bargain?

You are doing exactly what Apple want you to do, and then hoping you buy an iPad 3 as well.

The true bargains come much later, not now.

iPads are not necessary products, if you have gone without one for this long I think you can wait until the iPad 3 to get something with current technology.

Either way its your choice what you spend your money on.

  • +1

Apple price is $579.00 so this is a bit of a bargain.

Kogan also have the 16 Gig wifi version for $469.00 plus $29.00 delivery. The prices for other versions are decent too although they claim to have sold out of the 64 Gig wifi only version.

    http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/category/apple-ipads/

I bought the 32 gig wifi version from them last year.

I always carry the iPhone with me so I can tether if need be. Wifi network at home and work means I don't miss not having a 3G iPad.

As a device to consume media, it great; Web browsing, exchange email, games, streaming video (using VLC streamer), eReader, reminders, YouTube etc.

Not such a good device if you want to do "real work" which is why I still have desktop and laptop PC's.

Lack of flash support is a bit annoying at times but I knew that would be the case. Yeah, I realise this isn't a problem with Android tablets…

    • Kogan delivered price is $498 :) good spotting. might go with kogan

      • Some people reported that when they checked the warranty date information on Apple, iPad 2s sold by Kogan tend to only have 10 months (rather than 12 months).

I would go with BigW as they are one of the authorised retailers.

NOTE: Apple do price match prices from authorised retailers (e.g. BigW).

  • Here's my take on this: If you want to buy an iPad now, this is definitely a bargain. However, a new model is coming out soon, with features that some people might appreciate, and others might not. This model may also possibly drop further in price. Some people might need that iPad now, some people might not. As with every other bargain, people must do their own research, and come to their own conclusions.

    • In short, some people might agree with you, and others might not.

      • That may or may not be correct.

      • Dupe

  • the ipad2 will still be on sale, when the ipad3(2s) is released.

Dont expect much innovation out of the new model.
4g and upgraded hardware in the same shell.

Considering most people use ipads are glorified picture viewers and for email. Most people will be fine with an ipad 2.

  • -2

Can't wait for the iPad 3!

  • +1

Are we getting a USB port on the next iPad? We can only hope.

    • +2

I think you will have a better luck gambling your family away than betting it would have a USB port.

    • They'd sooner put Firewire on the next iPad than USB. Not Thunderbolt… Firewire.

  • -5

im sure iphone 5 will make launch alot earlier than ipad3.

  • Good deal for the moment but worth waiting for better deals

  • This is an awesome deal

  • I love my wifi + 3G ipad 1 for leaving on the bedside table first thing in the morning when I wake up.

Check ebay sales , check bank account ,check bargains , check catalouges , email etc all done within a few minutes.

If the ipad 3 is over $500 it wont be worth the upgrade.

Also I've dropped my ipad from standing height , It slipped out of the case bounced off concrete back into my hand and left a little wobble in the outer alloy casing. I don't think
an ipad 2 would withstand that ?

    • +1

"Also I've dropped my ipad from standing height , It slipped out of the case bounced off concrete back into my hand"

Was that at Ninja school ?

      • It was at Konoha Ninja Academy.

    • From standing height and bounced back to your hand? you may want to send it back to apple for further research on your particular pad, so they can patent the bouncing pad / nodropworries findings.

  • Target has the original iPad 64GB + 3g + wifi for $500 FYI

  • Insert snarky comment here about all the people who said things along the lines of "Why do people need to point out "Apple releases new products periodically"

In case you haven't heard - Apple has dropped the price of the iPad 2 to $399 for the 16gb WiFi model.

  • $399 is the Apple US price, I forgot that we always get ripped off in Australia. Expect the price to be slightly under AU$400 though once the grey market guys (Kogan, ShoppingSquare etc) update their prices.
