decent price but that delivery date pass!

    • +5

No it hasn't. August is over 30 days away.

      • +7

He means he's passing on the deal because the delivery date is too far away.

    • +3

I ordered mine less than 2 weeks ago, it showed same delivery date as it does now but still got the shipped notification yesterday.

    • and delivered today

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I don't know much about these things, but I always wondered - why don't they come in an exclosure rather than being exposed like that?

    • +4

depends what your using it for, plenty of good cases available for them or it might be installed inside a project or other equipment

    • Its an open kit.
Some people may want to connect various components or cabling to it which will not fit in a standard conventional case or housing.
Stock housing does come as extra and fits snug.

    • +11

It would add size cost and weight.

Same reason a PC motherboard comes without a PC case; you can build your system how you wish/need.

    • Enclosure would be an added cost I would imagine, the good news is you can either 3D print a case, check if your local library has a 3D printing service, or cut from cereal box, there are free templates available online.

      • …or buy one of the millions available online?

        • +3

… Or go down 3d printing route and spend more

The Pi was originally largely aimed at being an educational tool which is why it has those exposed pins etc. It's also taken off heavily as a hobbyist product. Neither of those two use cases really needs a case, and in particular the hobbyist market will have users looking to build cases that suit the task at hand.

While you can run a full desktop off it, thats not necessarily the main market for the product so it doesn't need to be an enclosed PC like device. None the less, they do have an official case and the Pi 400 is also a somewhat interesting form factor for someone wanting something closer to a PC. (https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-400/)

    • Better Youtube about the uses of RaspberryPi and it'll give you some ideas, and why you may need not a standard enclosure depending on your project :-)

I ordered from the previous deal with an estimated dispatch date of July 21, but they ended up dispatching on June 30.

    • Same here.

    • Got mine from the previous deal today and didn’t order until the 22nd…..

  • Last I recalled the 8gig version with 64gig micro SD, sch10 and a enclosure (including transfer card) $149 seems much better, including tax.

    • What can you use 8gb ram for? Transcoding video? Wonder this is a good offer or I should wait. Not sure what to use it for to be honest

      • should be able to use for kodi/neptunerising

      • +1

You could use it if you want to run multiple docker containers etc. This will slowly start using the 8gb

      • What can you use 8gb ram for?

        +1
For anything that requires 8GB of RAM IMHO an ex-business desktop with a 4th gen i5 and 8GB of RAM is a better buy for $150.

    • I can't find it on pbtech?

    • There's little use for all those specs, don't just buy the best cause you want a fun gadget.

I think I have the 4GB, which was the biggest when I got it and for my uses it never goes over 1.5GB memory used.

Worth a read, seems like some valid points: https://medium.com/@ikarus/why-i-sold-my-raspberry-pi-4-for-…

    • +1

A number of the points have since become moot though and there’s few things the author didn’t try to alternately resolve on the Pi even though they could have… like storage.

    • +1

Most of his issues were fixed a while ago eg. heat with firmware updates. Using usb chargers is fine with the updated 2gb version which you need to be careful of when buying any of these.

Still rocking RP2 as my torrent server. I turn it on only when needed via Google assist.

    • How's that, POE?

      • Just a wifi plug 😜

        • Honestly not a bad idea.

However my bittorrent downloader is a docker image inside a VM inside a NAS - it's probably using half of a core and 400MB memory at most. Still Pi is a nice simple option.

  • I got an RPi 3B+ just running pihole with unbound. It's already worn out 3 microsd cards. Does the 4 not have this issue?

    • +3

I see no reason why it would be any different. SD cards were never designed for the large amount of read/writes running an OS on them results in.

Buy a cheap 128GB SSD, put it in a USB case and boot from that instead.

You really don’t need a pi4 for pihole. Heck, what you already got is overkill.

      • I assumed that's the case for pihole, maybe it's just logs that causes the read/writes?

Also, wasn't booting from SSD a Pi 4 feature just of late?

        • I set up a compressed RAM drive to hold log files. Caveat is that the logs are lost if the server crashes and needs to reset.

I also redirected the home assistant logs to the NAS.

          • @skid: How do I redirect home assistant logs to NAS?

            • @yfxsmike: The home assistant logs are in

              .homeassistant/db

I added an entry in /etc/fstab to point that directory to the NAS

          • +1

            @skid:

the logs are lost if the server crashes and needs to reset

Isn't that when you really need to view the logs to see what caused the crash?

        • Also, wasn't booting from SSD a Pi 4 feature just of late?

          Nope

          • +1

@PainToad: From that link: "The Raspberry Pi Pi 400 and newer Raspberry Pi 4B boards support USB boot by default. On earlier Raspberry Pi 4B boards, or to select alternate boot modes, the bootloader must be updated."
So you could boot from SSD if your SSD is in a USB enclosure.

            • @juicejuice: Hence why I said “nope” to the question of if it was just for the pi4…what’s your point?

          • @PainToad: Cheers

    • +2

Unlikely to be the RPi issue, more likely the SD cards you're using not built for constant read/writes . I had similar issues with using standard sd cards with my dashcams and lost one in my RP 3B and switched to sandisk high endurance card and haven't had the issue since after a year or so.

    • Buy different cards or move PiHole to a VM (it uses nothing) turn the 3B+ into a Kodi box.

    • +1

Get a good card and use Log2Ram. My pi has been running over a year with the same card with pihole and other things.

Is 2 GB enough for OctoPi?

    • Should be plenty but I'm also curious.

      • +1

        Pulled the trigger.
Asked the question on Creality Facebook group and got the feedback that is an overkill :)

    • +2

My 1GB 3B+ works fine, so I'm sure this will work.

    • My question is, Can I just put this in an enclosure or do I need to get a fan aswell?

  • Estimated Shipping date

    Thursday 12 August 2021

    • Items from your PB Tech order are ready to be picked up by the courier and will be with you shortly!

      Just WOW!

      • +1

Got my Pi and OctoPi-ed it :)

  • Is 2GB ram enough to run as an emulation machine? Probably mostly Dreamcast, was thinking maybe running retropie.

  • why are the higher versions never available ?

  • Good price - but need 8gb ver. to run win10?

  • are you planning to use hyperion?

Have you got a shopping list for the rest of the items you could share?

Guessing you also watched smarter home's extended tutorial video?

    • Yeah Hyperion. Still studying but so far the HDMI video capture card with loop, LED strip and few cables. But decided the make the Magic Mirror with Google assistant first as well as run Pihole.

      • +1

Make sure you get a big power supply for the LEDs!

I've only got 136 of the WS2812b's on my monitor but it's pulling something like 5A at 5v at full brightness. Probably should have gone with 12v ones instead but they were less flexible for my needs.

        • Thanks for the tip, I will use a laptop charger/adapter for this.

          • +2

@anamul: Just make sure the voltages match.

You don't want to send 19v from a typical laptop PSU into a string that is rated for 5v. Easy way to let out the magic smoke.

        • where did you order your LED strip from?

          ebay? aliexp?

  • Estimated shipping is now 03/01/2022 lol

    • Pi5 might be available before then

  • Received mine last week.

    • what are you using it for?

      • +1

Recalbox. I had a Pi 3 that I was using for Recalbox but turned that into a Pi-hole.

  • Has anyone had any recent updates to there order?

    • Last email on 16th July: "This is an update on your recent order WO33XXXXX that is still in progress."

      • Yeah I've had those, just automated ones from what I can tell.

  • "Is ETA on 2gb Raspberry Pi really 13/01/2022?"

    "HI there,
Unfortunately that is correct due to the chip shortage at the moment"

    :(

    • eeh? So, those who ordered thinking shipment in mid August is a bit long to wait, but went ahead anyway …. may need to look for the cancel order button? 2022!! Yikes.

  • Received mine this morning.

  • +3

estimated 13/01/2022. I ordered maybe a week or 2 ago. put just got a shipping email and tracking today.
