I'm just confused as to why the major retailers made such a big fuss about it, have they pulled all small battery products from sale that haven't complied to the new regs that companies still have 18 months to conform?

Airtag probably has a much larger network of users and unsure if I'd wanna attach one to my Nut

All tags are good for tracking customers, eg Apple knows where their customers move to allocate services.
Overall, all tags are more fashion than really useful, & drain your battery as they require unrestricted GPS & BT (no battery saver option)
I'd go for NutTag just for the name.. But other than that.. the website looks shady/spammy as hell.
Another option is Chipolo one spot which is using Apple Find My network. It just slightly cheaper compare to AirTag but you can use 10BLOG code to get 10% off

Development costs? Other companies did the R&D for Apple long ago.
Other companies designed and stood up the manufacturing for them? Other companies did the planning, design and coding for the Find My network?
Sure, there may have been inspiration from existing products (Tile), but no other company did any R&D for AirTags.
