  • +19

For those who haven't bought these before, these are OzBargain's equivalent to eneloops

    • +3

What's magic about these? Why do tomatoes need special knies?

      • +11

        Because they're current $10 a kilo…

(oh, and because they're squishable and have a skin that's easier cut with a serrated edge.)

        • +1

what makes these much better than my whatever knives I have? how much are knives normally??
this is a whole new world for me.

how do you sharpen wavy 🔪

the ones we have now are Scanpan Spectrum Steak Knife

          • +1

@furyou: if you don't like the steak and tomato knife perhaps i can interest you in a steak and pizza knife?

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: came in for a deal, walked out with 10 types of knives…

          • @furyou: I've sliced through an avocado seed with these. perfectly round slices of avocado lol. Couldn't do it when the avocado was too ripe though.

      • They are very sharp. I have some 12 years old.

      • These are sharp sharp sharp sharp.

  • +1

Pairing knife for $7 as well. Only yellow.

    • +20

        • +1

          Knifi

      • 😅

  • +3

Free from the afterpay deal last time

    • But afterpay somehow affects credit score?

      • +1

Afterpay do not perform credit checks, so no changes to credit score. All other BNPL do.

However it may have an impact on your serviceability/ credit worthiness with any institution you're seeking credit from.

        • +1

Sort of. The banks always flag regular repayments (such as a car loan, or HECs debt) as liabilities. If you make 3 monthly payments via after pay to purchase something, the bank will question whether its a liability or not, in which you can clarify with them that it is just a small purchase that you have already completely paid for, and then it won't affect your ability to borrow money anymore.

          • @hongerwonger: I just pay out the purchase straight away on afterpay..

            • @digitizer: Yep then it's no different to purchasing anything else and the bank won't even flag it

      • +3

It was an eBay bug so didn't even need after pay

  • +1

They're all the same, just different colours right?

    • Yip

    • +2

      Black has more powaaar

    • +4

      Blue is calm
      Black has vibranium power
      Green is environmentally friendly.
      Red cuts faster.

  • +1

    Not wavy but serrated knives

  • Presume these are all identical apart from colour? For some reason Amazon won't deliver the red to my PO box or parcel locker, but will for the others.

Any other Victorinox knives that are recommended? I've already got their chefs' knife which is excellent.

    • +5

      Red cuts faster.

      • they're colour coded so you dont cross contaminate .. dahhhhhhhhhhh.

  • +7

    Really good!

Got one for free during the eBay sale, when I opened it I sliced my thumb with no effort!

    • Nice.

    • I did the same. bled like. a mofo.

    • +2

      Cardboard and tape

    • Mannn I thought I was the only one! Was trimming the fat of the steak, slid through like knife on butter and trimmed the tip of my middle finger at the same time!

    • Happened to me as well. Was trying to remove tape residue, ended up slicing my finger.

  • +1

Might be tricky cutting the core out of a tomato with a rounded knife.

    • +1

Then stop mistaking apples for tomatoes.

    • The what now?

Why would you ever want to cut out the centre of a tomato

      • +3

I don't actually core it like an apple but I do remove the bit that connects to the vine, maybe up to 10mm into the tomato.

        • you going 3mm too far brah.

        • +2

There's something seriously wrong about how you eat your tomatoes.

  • I need a cover for these

    • +1

      Its not a hunting knife.

      • +7

        Never hunted tomatoes before?

        • +4

They're wily things.. one minute you see 'em innocently swingin' on the vine; turn around and BAM! you've been sauced

        • Missing out. Easiest hunt of your life.

(If you cant hunt them in the wild, go Commando in Coles.)

  • +1

I ordered one on the eBay afterpay freebie deal a while ago and it got lost in mail transit. 😢 much sad

    • +1

Ebay should do the refund at least for you

  • Slightly off-topic, but can anyone recommend a good chef's knife (or equivalent) that isn't too expensive? (Under $40-80 ideally, but whatever is good value)

  • +1

I see people slice and dice the shit out of their tomato on youtube leaving cubes but when I try it with this knife, it ends up being a blob of shit.

    • Use slightly underripe tomatoes for that.

  • You gotta buy two?

    • Yes, identical twins.

      • Ozb has not failed me before so I'm all in erhhhmm i mean two in?

  • +5

Day 1 = Wow slices this pear like butte….YEOOWWWW F#$&(@#&$

Day 2 = Never touching that free Ozb knife again.

  • This is a great quality knife.. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Perfect timing for my cousin's brit milah.

    • Your cousins birmitsfa?

      • -1

        bar mitzvah

        • He said brit milah, not bar mitzvah.

          • @DMFD: Well I just learnt something today yawn two things actually just like knives

  • I have the 'non serrated' version but have used these before. Great knives for the purpose and have bought 4.

  • As I type I'm looking at my thumb and index finger…both with cut wounds. These knives are ridiculously sharp. Handle with care.

  • Are these knifes $7 or $14.99? Try to art to cart and price changes to 14.99??

  • +2

    Terrific knives.

We use them as normal dinner knives. Steaks, chicken, bread, and of course tomatoes are no issue.
Once you use these, you won't go back to using dinner knives.
We've bought different colours over the last few years, so its a bit of a novelty with the family with who gets what colour.

People keep commenting on cutting themselves with them, but they are no more difficult or dangerous to use than normal knives. Our 10yo and 7yo are fine with using them with dinner. And if you're cutting yourself with knives when cutting tomatoes, you aren't tucking in your finger tips like you're supposed to ;).

  • I liked it better for free like the other day…

  • is there a difference between the red and the rest? its description is different

  • Only red seems to be available at this price now.

Bunch of other colours at $7.50 if you search.

  • +2

The red colour is great for disguising the fact you've cut yourself. The mrs always falls for it until she finds my finger in her food

  • Used the tomato knife for few months. Extremely sharp. Loved it for cutting different veggies. But v easy to cut your fingers. I usually never cut myself using any other knives before, but this one I cut myself 3-4 times in 6 months. Last one was quite a deep cut and I end up throwing the knife in the bin.

I have been cooking for 10+ years so do know how to cut vegetables/use a knife.

So be extra careful and do no let anyone young to use it especially.

  • Looks like only red available. Judy bought 4x red

    • Red ? care to give the link it's showing $15 buux

  • +1

    Ozbargained

    • Sigh… too late

  • These are very useful if you have killer tomatoes
    https://youtu.be/txfdGlxEsG8

  • +1

I am always late for this deal 🙄

    • Black is back in stock

  • While I didn't get them on this or the previous 'free' deal, I regularly purchase these using my points on my Kogan black rewards no annual card at the inflated price of $11.95. They're awesome knives and my 'goto' for cutting pretty much anything.

  • How do I sharpen these knives. Anyone know?

    • From what i was told on other deals like this one, you don't need to sharpen these ones. And if it was required, i think you might have to go to find special place with a special machine to do it

      • Thank you

        • Yeah sharpening serrated knives is a bit more complicated, and while doable with the right tools, most serrated knives are cheap enough you wouldn't bother, these included.

My mother has had these for many years (maybe 10?) and they're still scary sharp.
