What are OzBargain's favourite Dashcams?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to buy a decent dashcam as I don't have insurance, so it might be useful to have this little investment in case something happens.

What are your recommendations for a nice simple dashcam? I'm not looking for one with super advanced and extra features, just for one with a good FOV, video quality that's good enough to be usable and that's super simple to use (i.e., doesn't require me to go through 10 menus to turn it on and make it work).

My only requirement would be for the cam to have the possibility to draw power directly from the car without having to use a 12V to USB converters, and thus allowing me to HIDE the power cable completely.

Any recommendations? What would be the equivalent to OzBargain's eneloops, victorinox paring knives, etc for dashcams?

Thanks!

Until it's your word against their's and insurance believes them and not you! :p~

yes, that's why they also pair it with a Garmin 55w,

In my case, since i'm only driving very little every month due to covid moving everything to WFH, i think an insurance for around $800 a year might be too much (that's the quote i got from coles insurance, not sure if other would be waaaay cheaper).

Smart move on FoxJump's part. I was really just poking fun at half his comment but there is truth in it. I was a claims assessor before (investigation and liability side of things, not repair assessment) and the amount of times that people straight-out lie is pretty bad. I have a BlackVue 750 front and back for that very reason.

Look around and keep in mind that the cheapest isn't always the best. Claims management and experience is really important. It's useless having a policy if you need to jump through hoops to get them to even consider a claim. It's common amongst the smaller insurers.

(I pay about $2000/year myself to be with a big reputable insurance company even when I know I can pay $1400 or so to be with a smaller budget insurer).

          • @bobbified: Thanks for the info, i guess i was just used to paying cheap insurance while i was living overseas. I even had one where my monthly payment was based on how much i drove (had to install a device on my car).

I'll do some real research then on insurance, see how my budget looks and then decide on what to do. Maybe start with el cheap-o and improve as things get better.

I'll also have a look at the BlackVue. Have had so many friends in that situation where it wasn't their fault, and the other person just straigth up lied.

            • @pichxlonco: Sorry. Wasnt a 55w. Was just 55

Gets wired to armrest and then tucked beneath mats and tucked up a pillar then tucked under headlining.

Been thinking of doing a rear one but haven't.

    I don't have insurance

This is about to get interesting (grabs popcorn)

I have both the Viofo A129 Plus Duo and BlackVue DR900S-2CH, for the banger and executive vehicles respectively. Both do a good job, I would recommend both brands depending on the use.

  • Viofo A119.
First up, get insurance now, at least TPP.

  • I found some viofo A119's have a bug where they don't turn on when you start the car up. I ended up ditching them for some other one I found at the tip buyback shop for $10… Can't remember the brand and it's too cold atm to go out and check sry llol…

    • Had this wired up for about 8 months now, been great.

      • My initial one was playing up. Banggood replaced the whole unit.

  • Back home I got a Thinkware camera in my truck. Here I just bought some kmart special I found for $3 (was marked for $5) and its seems decent enough.

  • Anyone in south east Melbourne got an installer they would recommend? Picked up the A119, and need it installed

    • Is it too difficult to install by yourself? Can you power it directly from your car battery without having to plug it to the 12v adapter?
