How Long Does Yoghurt Last Unrefrigerated?

If I forgot to put a yoghurt in the fridge after buying it from Coles (sealed), how long would it last to still be safe to eat?

  • 2 hours max.

    • It’ll depend on the temperature of where it’s kept, considering it is winter, if one is up in the snow, should be ages ;)

  • A day (assuming room temp is 20 degC)

    4 mins if it's 40+ degrees

    • Linear or exponential grade between those two points?

        Exponential….of course….. :o)

Put it in the fridge, open it the next day and smell it. You'll know if it survived.

It depends on a number of factors, ambient air temperature, wind velocity, humidity, temperature of the yoghurt and storage medium to name a few.

  • Melbourne’s current cold climate? Overnight, easy.

prolly colder outside than in the fridge

I must respect my elders. 6-8 hours is fine:)

I left some fresh salmon in a sealed container out one morning recently, but didn't realise until the next morning. It survived, and so did I after eating it.

I'd think yoghurt would be fine for a similar period. Years and years ago, the milkman left the bottle outside your house during their run.

When I make yoghurt it sits happily for more than a day on the bench.
I would have no hesitation eating yoghurt unrefrigerated for a day or two.
The sole reason it exists is to safely keep milk in an unrefrigerated environment.

The more you wait, the more cultured you can get!

Left an unopen 1L tube outside all night on the kitchen bench only to discover next morning. Had it for breakfast without problem.
