Is this taking the pi$$??? Do I really need a bathroom scale that talks to my iThingy?

    • Yes, if you are a health fanatic.

i know its biased, but i will second that …..

Going to the gym daily, i like to record my results.

It's a good price but health fanatics would want body fat scales and this doesn't measure body fat.

        • Hmm, I wouldn't be too quick to write off regular scales, as a health fanatic I'm not a fan of those body fat scales, they are expensive and pretty hit and miss in my experience. Get a set of body fat calipers, they are like less than 10 bucks from Amazon and are far more accurate.

Ignore the iThingy for a second.

If you're serious about losing weight, you need to weigh yourself every day (preferably more often), and apply a smoothing function to the values. The reason for that is, your weight fluctuates a fair bit over the day, depending on what you eaten or drunk. A cup of water is zero calories but 250 grams; drink two of those and you've just gained half a kilo of "weight" without actually gaining any real weight (i.e. fat/muscle).

So, you can either weigh yourself every day, manually enter the details into a spreadsheet/website and graph them, or you can buy a scale that'll log and smooth your weight automatically, like this one.

Personally, I think that the WiFi-based ones from Withings/Fitbit are better, because you don't need any extra gear on-hand (you can just step on the scales), and the less effort involved the more likely you'll use them. Plus they tie into Daily Burn/Runkeeper. That said, they are about three times the price of this one.

i disagree. as you mentioned, your weight will fluctuate by up to a couple of kilos through out the day. once a week will better indication of any weight loss. you shouldn't become obsessed with weighing yourself all the time. permanent weight loss is about adopting a healthy eating regime.

You definitely don't want to get obsessed with daily weight but it's very useful to have a history of weight. Personally, if I remember I weigh myself in the morning, in the exact bedwear, same time, empty bladder, Monday through friday. Don't bother with weekend as there are too many variables like beer on Fridays or getting up late etc. I tend to eat and drink the same amount every day on weekdays. Eliminating as many variables as you can will give you a more accurate reading. Just my 2 cents.

The solution to data fluctuation is not less data.

As long as you're aware of the fluctuation, and you're focusing on the trend in the data rather than the most recent data point, there's no reason not to weigh yourself more often than once a week.

        • once a week will better indication of any weight loss.
So look at it once a week. Scales like these let you break "weighing" and "looking" into two different activities; there's no need to do them both at the same time.

Like Gilbarc says below, the solution to data fluctuation is not less data.

Does it automatically subtract the weight of the iPhone/iPad ?

    • yes, also your clothes if it helps

Well that throws out my excuse to walk around the house naked. :/

I bought this in their Boxing day sale. Works well. A lot easier than using the Wii. This plus a program like Runtracker/Sports tracker makes hitting a fitness goal easier.

  • It would be more enticing if it could also do body fat. Eh. Looks a bit of a gimmick otherwise.

    • It would be more enticing if it was free :P

    Is there an android version?

I assume that it displays the weight on the iThing, which is exceptionally handy for those of us too fat too actually see the scale while standing on it.

    • umm… i wish i can write that in the advert! but its soooo true….

    • Or those of us with crummy eyesight that can't see the scale :)

  • How does that work?

  • Hey, any chance you can make a deal for the blood pressure from the iHealth?

    • keep your eyes peeled on our weekly deals :)

we can post weekly if we get enough votes, otherwise its fortnightly. rules of ozb -

Thanks to everyone who made their purchases tonight, 23 remaining for sale
