QHD 1440P monitor

I have a Toshiba PORTEGE X20W-E laptop with a USB-C hub that can display to a 1080P monitor via USB as a dual monitor.

I want to buy a larger 27inch QHD 1440P monitor.

How can I find out if my laptop can output 1440P?

Can't find anything in the manual that specifies the resolution.

I find that 27inch with 1080P isn't sharp, especially when you have the laptop next to it displaying 1080P on a 12.5 inch screen.

Find out what your graphics card is, find specs for said graphics card, you should have your supported output.

    For example yours is:

      Many thanks.

Having read that, the graphics card should support 4k, however doesn't specify if it's 4k over 1 monitor or 2.

I think it should support 1440p via HDMI and 1080p on the internal monitor.. fingers crossed.

      • You could take it to Officeworks with your own cables and try it out.

They always have working monitors on display and are usually pretty accommodating…unless you're asking for a refund.

        • Good idea, should have read your commend before I purchased a 4k monitor (see below).. lol

Opening up a can of worms here.

I started looking for a 27inch 1440p monitor and they start around the high 2, $300 price range.

For some reason Viewsonic and AOC have a 31.5inch 1440p for like $300.

I don't play games or watch movies on it, only for office work. Any reason why I shouldn't get a cheap 31.5inch 1440p other than pixel density?

Slipperly slope here.. starts looking at 31inch 4k monitors lol

      There's a budget 28" 4k monitor here for $178 with the current 22% off code https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/233815547089

Yes it's TN but it'd be fine for just office work and browsing.

Recent OzBargain post for it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/629591

        Many thanks!

        Ordered!

        • No problem. I assume it will output the 4k 60Hz just fine considering it’s USB-C to HDMI, but of course just make make sure it is displaying 4k 60Hz when you set it up. If you remember, let us know how it goes and your impressions of the monitor.

          • @MiscOzB: Will report back once I receive it.

          • @MiscOzB: Hi CompulsiveOzB,

OK, thanks to @CompulsiveOzB I ordered and received the Dahua 28" Monitor 4K UHD LED Technology LM28-F401 5ms FreeSync TN for $178.

    Delivery was a bit slow.

    • HDMI cable included- bonus!

All the hallmarks of a cheap product- low build quality. cheap hard to press buttons, unintuitive GUI, flimsy stand, large bezel..

Power brick- good. cable from power brick to monitor a bit short.

Booted it up, hmmmm, didn't work. for some reason can't select input.. connected it to another laptop and it worked.
Reconnected to intended laptop, woohoo worked at 4K.

Picture quality is ok, colour seems a tad washed out regardless of the settings, not sure if I had a proper video card it would improve or not.

4K youtube isn't that smooth. Again, not sure if a proper video card it would improve or not.

But for the price, there's no way you complain about it. It's decent enough for office/web browsing, not sure about games as I don't play them.

Thinking of getting another one for the kids PC…. I guess that says it all.

    • Glad to hear mate. Yeah, can't really complain for that price. Enjoy!

      • Yeah the price, it exceeds expectations.

Actually just noticed a very very annoying thing.

The damn thing doesn't seem to go into sleep mode even after 30 mins.. just displays no signal. Most monitors would go into sleep mode after 5 mins or so.

Let me find out when it should go into sleep mode.

        • Ah, not sure about that, I never use sleep mode for my monitors, always either on or off (via power button on the monitor).

          • @MiscOzB: I haven't manually turned off my monitor at home or work since my old CRT days!

On standby it should use less than 0.5w.

Truth be told, I rarely even turn off my laptop. Laptops only use about 2w.

            • @JimB: If I have them go to sleep all of my windows get shuffled/moved to the other monitor. Actually with my current Dell monitor I don't turn it off and on with the power button, but rather use shortcut keys (via Dell software) which puts it in and out of standby (which is different to the sleep mode). Turning it off with the power button causes it to sleep. The Dell is connected through displayport and my second monitor is through HDMI (HDMI isn't a problem, it's just displayport that causes the issue).

              • @MiscOzB: OK, I don't want to waste electricity, so not going to test it any further.

I think the monitor is faulty, even after 32 minutes with the HDMI cable unplugged the monitor does not go into standby mode.
The monitor keeps displaying 'No Signal'.

Unplugged the HDMI to ensure it wasn't a windows/HDMI issue.

Reported it to the seller…I'm expecting them to issue a replacement.
