nbn Modem Router Needed (Budget $400)

Hello,

I'm after a NBN modem router, currently own a NetComm nf10 which is outdated and is starting to struggle a lot especially as have upgraded to the 100/20 tier. Have got FTTN.

Because we only have one point in the house (kitchen) we require a modem router so that way there isn't too many devices hanging out at the limited space. It's hard to find modem router with AX tech that won't blow the budget which is capped at $400 so I guess want the best AC model that will be future proof too. Mostly use it for streaming on multiple devices, studying, gaming, general browsing.

So after my research and looking for deals I'm interested in purchasing either:
Netgear Nighthawk x4s d7800 modem router -$350
D Link Cobra 5300 modem router - $350

What are your opinions on those two modem routers and please feel free to give more options if you think there are better ones for the price?

Thanks

    • Whens it ship?

    • Thanks, I'm having a look at it now..seems interesting. Great that it has a mesh system Competition against nest.

Just curious, would other routers also connect to the main modem router or they specifically would have to be Deco X20 units?

      • You can have a Deco X20-DSL acting as the VDSL2 modem while bridged to another router. That is an expensive exercise with no benefits compared to a cheap VDSL2 modem. To keep everything under one app use the Deco X20-DSL and Deco X20 together.

That is true, I might wait to see if more stores end up getting them in Australia and then compare prices. It's in a good price range though from what it seems to offer.

    • Hello, I have a question regarding the 2.4ghz setting it states no ac so does that mean that my current devices which have 802.11 ac will only connect to the 5ghz and not 2.4?

      • What did you buy?

        • I'm about to purchase the tp link deco X20 as you recommended especially as it's dropped in price a little.

11ac is only 5GHz, not just specific to the product you're looking at.
11n is as fast as you will get on 2.4GHz unless you go to AX

See here for a breakdown in specifications

        • Thanks, I have a better understanding now

  • You will not get anything that is future proof. As you have a small budget with a champagne requirement have a look at the various TP-Link devices and then check out who has them on special via google.

    • Thanks.
How come you recommend TP-Link devices? Do they seem to be more reliable and cheaper?

  • Get a Mikrotik RB4011 - It can't be beaten for the price and features.

    • Quad-Core 1.4Ghz, 1GB RAM
    • High power quad-chain AC 5Ghz Wireless @ 1733 Mbps and Dual-Chain 2.4Ghz,
    • IPSEC Hardware encryption
    • 10 x Gigabit ports, POE-IN & POE-OUT, 10Gbps SFP port.
    • Super configurable with advanced features like VPN's, hot-spots, routing and queuing - The Swiss army knife of routers. Comes with License level 5

    $371 @ Duxtel brochure here

    • I am using this router, bought it 2nd ( about 1 month old when i bought it). A hotel owner sold it to me only $70. It is superior, worth every single cent

  • Hi, we had a Netgear d7000? Lots of issues, with Printers and PC's disappearing off the Network. Their after sales-service is beyond hopeless. I ended up selling the 3rd replacement and buying a TP Link Voip unit. similar issue.

We now have a Dlink AC2600 Viper, About 2 1/2 years ago. About Jan2020, we had issues with it connecting I made a call to Dlink & iinet.

Solution swap the modem over. I did, with the same model. We still had the same problem. I contacted iinet, who put me onto a senior tech, and it turned out to be a minor setting in the connection wizard (so original unit was probably fine). Replacement Unit has been running great since, though the NBN in our suburb is being upgraded to FTTP (from FTTN).

    • Seems like you've had a lot of issues with your internet so that must've been frustrating.
Glad that it has been resolved and it's all running great as should.
I think JB recently had a sale on the viper 2600, I will read up about it a bit more.

      • It's fairly basic in the software. The only thing that annoys me is having to type in a Captcha script when logging into the Router.
It wasn't so much the Internet, until iinet changed their settings. Something to do with VDSL???

Ironically, iinet recommended TPLink, which was the one I replaced.

        • That seems to be the case with ISPs. Mine has recommended Tp Link Vr2800 or 2100v but saying that a lot of their customers who have had d link modems seem to have issues..

  • So how is the modem/router/mesh that you bought? I'm thinking of buying it as well.

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

It's going good, was a fairly simple setup with the app. The only thing I'm not a fan of is that can't manually select the channels to which you want the frequency to be. It's all done under their 'network optimisation.' I think TP Link has bought that option to the m9 and supposedly will be available on their other devices.

I'd get their modem, and offload dhcp to something ubiquiti

  • Looking for an NBN broadband compatible Router in a range of $300?
    Any suggestions
