      Has Flavour Enhancers (621, 635)

      • Good stuff.

    • +4

Does it matter if they do?

      • Yes gives me asthma!

        • +2

Do you find that any of these give you asthma

          Anchovies
          Ham
          Parmesan cheese
          Cheddar cheese
          Walnuts
          Tomatoes
          Kimchi
          Mushrooms
          Broccoli
          Green peas
          Corn
          Potatoes

          • -3

@spaceflight: No why would they. They dont have flavour enhancer 621. Not following your pointless comment

            • +6

@didelly: Not a pointless comment. All of the above contain natural msg. There have been no conclusive studies to say MSG is bad for you. Like salt and sugar, too much will have an effect but no one is bitchin about salt.

              • +1

@Wyzard: Perhaps it's the amount. Naturally occurring MSG could be quite small compared to the synthetic or manufactured variation they add to flavoured crisps/chips which is the problem.

                  Unlikely

Naturally occurring MSG could be quite small compared to the synthetic or manufactured variation they add to flavoured crisps/chips which is the problem.

All of the foods in the list have high levels of MSG, many likely much higher than processed foods.

For example a bag of Doritos has 609mg of sodium per 100g. That is salt plus MSG so the actual level of MSG is less.
                  https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/826731/dor…

Salt occurs first on the ingredients list so there will be more sodium in Doritos because of salt than MSG. For arguments sake lets say that half of the sodium is form MSG (which is ignoring the naturally present MSG from the cheese powder, corn and other ingredients)

That means that all of the below most likely have more MSG in them than Doritos.

                  Anchovies (630)
                  Cured ham (337)
                  Parmesan cheese (1680)
                  Roquefort cheese (1280)
                  Emmental cheese (310)
                  Cheddar cheese (182)
                  Dried shiitake mushrooms (1060)
                  Walnuts (658)
                  Dried tomatoes (650-1140)
                  Grape juice (258)
                  Tomatoes (246)
                  Kimchi (240)
                  Mushrooms (180)
                  Broccoli (176)
                  Green peas (106)
                  Corn (106)

            • @didelly: It's not pointless at all.
All of those foods contain MSG so if MSG gives you asthma then so well those foods

              https://msgdish.com/glutamate-foods-naturally-contain-msg/

          • @spaceflight: "People sensitive to monosodium glutamate (MSG, 621) may have short-term reactions such as headaches, flushing and numbness when they eat foods that contain large amounts of MSG, and some asthmatics may also be susceptible."

Cited from the most reputable google search ever. Anyway I know it can give me asthma or at least I suspect it is this ingredient no hard peer reviewed proof. Just my tightening chest and wheezing and subsequent reaching for Ventolin.

How about we use some proper research?

In 1999, Katherine Woessner’s team conducted a single-blind, placebo-controlled study to test the effects of MSG on 100 asthmatic patients (an earlier paper suggested that asthmatics with a sensitivity to aspirin might be sensitive to MSG). The researchers found that, while 30 participants believed they had a history of CRS, only one showed signs of reduced lung function after exposure to MSG. When that subject was tested again — this time in a double-blind, placebo-controlled challenge — the test came out negative.
Then in 2000, researchers conducted the largest double-blind, placebo-controlled study on MSG, consisting of 130 subjects who said they were sensitive to the additive. The researchers found that MSG produced short-lasting and minor reactions in a subset of people — but these could not be reproduced consistently upon retesting. (Read about more MSG-related experiments in this peer-reviewed essay appearing in Clinical Correlations: The NYU Langone Online Journal of Medicine.)

              or

An observational study of Chinese adults also found no association between MSG and asthma.[56] More recently, in 2017, an EFSA review concluded that the available data “did not provide conclusive evidence that MSG exposure is causally linked with elicitation of asthma attacks in the general population”.[36]
Studies to date have not found MSG to cause asthma or trigger attacks.

              The placebo effect is powerful.

I cannot find the study right not however there was one where a group of people were given the same Chinese food (containing no added MSG).

Half were told it had no MSG, and half were told it had MSG added.
Nobody form the "no MSG" group had any impacts
Several people from the "MSG included" group mentioned health impacts.

              • @spaceflight: Im pretty sure i know my body better than you. I never said anything about Chinese food, you're just assuming all Chinese food has MSG

                • @didelly:

Im pretty sure i know my body better than you.

Probably, but I know for powerful the placebo effect it.

I never said anything about Chinese food

                  I know

you're just assuming all Chinese food has MSG

No I'm not, I never said it did.

                  • @spaceflight: It cant be a placebo effect if the first time you eat something it gives you a medical condition like asthma, then you get it again eating a different food and then look at the packet to see the same flavour enhancer. You need to stop bringing this back to MSG. Damn I wasnt going to respond. You are right lets leave it at that

              • -3

@spaceflight: Last thing before I stop talking about this. Surely you cant compare all those natural foods you listed which probably have trace amounts of MSG to manufactured or processed foods? I would hazard a guess it is infinitesimally small in comparison. I only simply stated at the start it gives 'me' Asthma, I wasn't speaking for the general population. However it could be a different flavour enhancer such as 627 or 631, I don't want to lay blame on 621 specifically. And I agree with the other comment the effects of it have probably been exaggerated.

You don't even need to guess, it isn't infinitesimally small.
If you bothered to look at the link I provided you would see that the Free Glutamate Content of Foods (mg/100g) for those things is clearly stated.

I gave a rough example of MSG in a chips versus unprocessed foods.

  • Do these taste porky?

The black garlic one seems to be vegetarian, and the miso only contains chicken fat and fish…?

    • They do taste porky
Was surprised to see no meats on the list of ingredients

Wollies: Mama Noodles 90gx5pack for $2.45. A bargain compared to this deal

    • +12

The problem is Mama brand is utter garbage compared to this.

      • +4

They're the best of Thai-based tom yum noodles, WTF you talking about? Just because you only like ramen style doesn't mean they're bad. Still shouldn't compare the 2 though, pretty different

        • I think the one from woollies TomYum paste isn’t “creamy” compared with those from oriental grocery stores.

          • @wtfnodeal: the more i eat the mama ones the more overrated i think they are

quick cook and boil is conveneient tho

definitely some sentimental value eating them uncooked+salted too

  • +2

I find these Nissin instant ramen to be better, closer to "real ramen". Most Asian places sell them now for $3. Made in HK. Two servings in each packet.

    https://media.karousell.com/media/photos/products/2020/8/17/…

    • This is always available in single pack before and now. I dont know they now come in 2 person pack. And whether the non oil-fry is new or not.

      • I've only ever seen them in a 2 person pack.

    • I’m keen to try those but haven’t yet, I can imagine them being leagues better than this stuff. Curly instant ramen isn’t anywhere near close to the real thing.

  • These are just average at best. If you want a good ramen that closest to the real deal, go to those Asian market and look for ones with long packaging. They are about $2.50-$3 EACH.

    • +2

How does the length of the packaging change the flavour?

      • +1

It's long because the noodles are different. It's not the square type, it's the long type bundles together like pasta. Also the soup tastes better!

        • That’s it 👉🏻

  • add a boiled egg, a piece of nori, (and a slice of roast pork, if you had roast pork last night) and you have the ultimate home made ramen.

FYI, For those in Western Australia, $5.95 is Spudshed everyday price.

  • The black garlic are my favourite cheap ramen option ever.

  • Thanks OP, love these

  • Good price for a single pack. My local asian grocer has 2 for $11

  • Saw documentary about Nissin being popular quality noodles in some Asian countries. Worth a try .

These + Tiktok recipe (kewpie mayo + Egg + Garlic) winter go to 👌👌

  • For WA people
Nissin Ramen Tokyo Shoyu Noodles 5 Pack is $4.99 down at MCQ
    Until tomorrow 11th June only

  • I prefer the made in HK compared to this one.

Had both living at a Japan hostel. It was ok with egg and chilli oil. Nothing too amazing about the noodle

    • +2

High expectations! Ha! In terms of Australia I think this is very good enough for the price! Even at full price!

    • The noodles are a letdown for sure, they're nice in texture but cut way too short.

  • +1

Spudshed have all the flavours for $5.99 permanently here in WA, unsure of other states. Cheaper than all Asian grocers I've been to.

    • now i know whatt to bring back on a WA trip lol

  • Just found out click and collect is $50 minimum - kind of a bummer

    • That's just 7 of these 5x packs so….

      • 5x kyushu black garlic
        2x tokyo shoyu sorted

actually spewing i've just missed this

  • Shio or salt flavoured instant ramen is supposedly the most popular variety in Japan. Is it labelled under a different kind name outside of Japan? I've never seen it in the shops.

Bought from Tongli (通利超市 supermarket Hurstville $4.99 last week

  • +1

Normal price is 6.75$ i thought this was like a 50% savings. Its funny if the original price was double. It would make it seem more enticing.

The sale is just 80cents but got 100+ upvotes

Had the Kyushu Black tonight. Wow damn amazing for an instant noodle

  • 500mL water is a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY.

300mL is the sweet spot. Thank me later.

  • +2

Bought some of the Garlic ones the other day and absolutely loved them. The stock was decidedly porky in taste (but that could have been enhanced by my additions).

In making it I added in some pork slices (the Asian ones you get from the frozen section in Coles and Woolworths) in the last three minutes of the cook, some corn kernels and then poured the soup contents into a bowl with a raw egg in there, mixed it up and then poured the rest of the noodles and pork slices in.

I normally have the Nongshim Shin Ramyun noodles and this was a very pleasant change from that. Definitely going to add this to my purchasing patterns.
