Just mark the parcel as a "gift". Should have no problems.

    • If you receive gifts or donated goods through the mail, these are still subject to assessment for duty, taxes and other charges (where applicable).

      https://www.abf.gov.au/buying-online/importing-by-post-or-ma…

What usually happens is when the customs gets hold of your item, they get Australia Post or some courier company to send you a notification called a "First notice". It'll give you instructions on how to lodge the import declaration form

You then pay the calculated amounts and Customs will release your parcel for delivery.

      • thanks a lot for the detailed info mate!!

the form asks about the value of the good, can i just put MSRP? which atm the way below the actual price value tho, i am guessing they using that to calculate the fee? and is it usually 5%?

Yes, the dutiable value should equal the retail price

          and is it usually 5%?

          No, GST is 10%

If it's a gift then get your friend to write the value on the customs label, $100 sounds about right.

  • Import duties and GST are still payable on items marked as gifts.
Buyer should also insure such an expensive item.

They will love you… even send you a card… with a bill attached :)

  • depending on who he uses to ship via, Most items ive bought, the carrier sents you an invoice before delivery.

  • I posted this on another thread, but it totally depends on the product your importing and how much it costs, generally if it's below the $1,000 AUD threshold you won't pay duty, but depending on how much the merchant sells into AU each year you may have to pay GST. You can use these guys to calculate how much you'll have to pay. Hope that helps!

Tell him to open the item up

Then declared it as broken not working for parts with value less than $1000 so you don't have to pay import tax
