  This may sound like a stupid question but how is there even a market for head units these days as modern cars all have their stereos built into the whole console?

    You can actually remove it and buy an empty shelf which allows you to install different head units. But it costs more money.
    For example, I believe getting a Civic (FD1) OEM shelf is like $215.

  Worth it if you can get to a store for an install, but otherwise prices aren't great.
