Moderator position and resources

I am going for a moderator position with one of the up and coming Messenger programs with a 50 million to 750 million accounts range. With the WhatsApp privacy policy change on 15th May 02021 and misinformation, people are moving in the tens of millions to alternative Messenger programs.

I note Ozbargain is mostly text-based with pseudonymous users. Would Ozbargain moderators sharing their experiences help in understanding this position?

This moderator position will also be reviewing pseudonymous users along with video, animated pictures, and pictures.

I am interested in any help you can give?

Whilst I expect to be heavily outcompeted by third world countries, hopefully, a first world country political stability and tightly regulated legal environment for both privacy and confidentiality will outweigh cost considerations.

Good luck interviewing for your new job at Telegram.

      Maybe Signal

I hate to think how little you'll be paid

    • If I get paid in experience and learning that might be the third way. It's remote.

        #exposure

        • Hahahaha

Hope the startup has a good employee care program. Whilst you may be doing some good, reading and seeing unfiltered 'negative' stuff can be quite detrimental.

    • Yes I'm aware of the lawsuit.

I do wish to be objective and exposure therapy is one way. But yes at what cost?

Paramedics have a morbid sense of humour and that's how they cope.

Sorry maybe I am not understanding correctly. Are you saying my private messages on a messaging app are moderated??

    • With some messaging apps yes they can be moderated. Even secret conversation can be reported and copied across.

Are you going to ban Trump too?

  • Hope you've got a thick skin and the patience of a saint. Minimum requirements for modding.

You don't want to do this. You will see videos of people being beheaded, raped, tortured etc. It is not worth any amount they say they will pay. Only do it if you are truly desperate for money. If they don't pay you much then you would be crazy to do it.

Not really a moderator so much as a censor pushing the agenda of that particular services overlord. You will be as objective as any one of the independent journalists at any of the Murdoch mouthpieces.

And really, what are they getting you to do that can’t be done mostly by a.i. anyway?

And really, what are they getting you to do that can’t be done mostly by a.i. anyway?

ML models need to be trained, and I am almost certain the moderation decisions will be fed back into the model. I guess there won't be much longevity in the role, but not many people stay in the same role for a long time anyway.

      • Is this something Australian social media is also doing? It would free them up to do more complex moderation.

  • Just imagine how many dick pics you'd have to look at every day!

Do you understand what you may be subjected to viewing and in what quantities?

Paramedics police etc are subject to some gruesome terrible sights but its on a limited basis. Ie: not having to see truely shocking things daily.

A moderator will be subjected to horrendous heinous sight after sight for hours on end day in and day out.

That will ultimately affect you. Its worth weighing that up.

Where exactly did you find this job that it's online only and open to anyone in the world? Sounds like a scam to me, it also sounds god awful, why not go get a job in a call centre instead where you only have to listen to the worst of humanity rather than look at it?

    • I applied and did one of the tests. I was not successful but maybe considered for future positions.

A call centre position is usually restricted to Australia.

In this position, it's possible to be a digital nomad.
