+1 just for that insight into coffee snobs! :)

[edit] They don't take the hint either, so are we supposed to be marking these essays on the topic: "Why Super-fresh Coffee is Super-superior to Supermarket Coffee?" :o

On fiscal matters alone a good deal - but while the 'Best Before/Expiration dates' on commerically roasted coffee is ~12mths roasted whole coffee beans are generally only regarded as 'fresh' within 4 weeks of roasting. Anything more than this results in loss of flavour etc.

And as for ground coffee….umm well that should be consumed within 5mins of being ground, smaller particle size makes it oxidize very rapidly.

This deal will work well for some folks, fair play but loads of very good online retailers of quality roasted coffee's these days. Makes a big difference - if you can't make that step atleast get some kind of grinder and buy only whole beans with you grinding on demand before you make each brew - prolly the single biggest quality improvement any home barista can make. Not a bad deal anyway. :-)

where can i buy fresh coffee beans?

Take the time to discover your local coffee roaster :-)

      • seeing as you are in sydney, a fantastic roaster is Whithams at Hornsby they sell some great blends love the elephant bean blend and also single origin. they roast daily too. $12-$15 for a 250g bag, but it tastes alot better than the stale supermarket stuff.

      • It's my first post after reading this site for months, I have a regular coffee provider that delivers me coffee beans and they are based in chapel st in Melb.

The beauty of this place is they roast and sell coffee beans only (so no purchasing a fresh coffee there.)

I used to make up batches on site by nose and getting a real personalised batch made up - but IMHO the prahran blend ($27-$28 kg) is their best and you will find it at many a great coffee shops around Melb.

order through their site with $12 p+h.

I've ordered from them and really enjoy their coffee.

      • This place is awesome for stupidly fresh beans!

All beans are batch labelled so you can see the exact date of roasting against the batch number. You can also mix and match different sizes if you ring.

In my experience the best supermarket coffee is Aldi's dark roast. Vittoria is pretty crap IMO.

It's normal price is cheaper then this "special", I think its about the $13 mark for 1kg.

    • I couldn't agree more, either the strong or the medium blend is excellent, and miles in front of Vittoria or Lavazza. If I make a short black on my home espresso machine I am hard pressed to tell the difference between the Aldi stuff and Danes or Campos, and I drink a lot of coffee.

      • the danes or campos if you just buy it in packs from the cafes that use their coffee, that is stale as well. got to go direct to the distributor if you want it fresh.

    • Thanks for that tip. Haven't tried Aldi before & will give it a shot now.

      • The Coles branded Dark Roast (Fairtrade FWIW) is also very good, it comes in at around $15/kg any day of the week if you can't get to an Aldi. I'd say it's well & truly on par with Aldi & Vittoria.

I also tried some of the Harris Reserve (Rainforest & FT certified too FWIW) a little while back based on the recommendation of someone here on OzB, but despite also being a dark roast I found it to be way too mild for my taste…I'd almost go as far as to say kinda bland (in my Saeco auto) even with the grind setting adjusted. I'll try it in a mate's manual machine & in a brika to see if it's salvageable! ;)

+1 as they are cheap for retail Vittoria beans.

But if you want the same taste for even less, I'll ship you a 2kg bag of dirt for $10.00.

Not quite Chicco Doro standards, but this stuff is drinkable.

  • The Starbucks 100% Arabica coffee beans is still on sale at COSTCO Auburn for $6.97 for 907gram (thats almost 1 kilo). Best before date is July 2012.
We go through 1 bag of this coffee a month in our household. Cheaper than Nescafe.

    • As a West Australian, i get a bit sick of hearing how cheap Adli and Costco are :-(
