Credit Card That Earns Points or cashback While Paying for Council Rates?

Just bringing up an old closed thread around cards that offer points for council rates. Now modernising to include cash-back cards.

Back then you could make a payment via Postbillpay, and then use Paypal with a linked card and get points that way. Anyone looked lately to see if it gets through with any current cards (back then Macquarie platinum was one), or at least build a list of those that dont earn points.

I can rule out:

Citi SIgntaure / Prestige
Virgin Money
HSBC Premier

AFAIK, paying council rate with a credit card, you’ll need to pay a merchant fee, so it depends if the points earned has greater value than the extra fees being paid.

If you're taking out a card to churn cashback or bonus points the points earned will have greater value.
However you're right, if it's just a standard earn the 1.5% extra would most likely outweigh any gain (qantas points are valued at roughly 1.9 cents)

    • I just use my AmEx with PostBillPay+PayPal and earn points - no merchant fee.
Also, you can earn points with ANZ Rewards cards when you pay directly with CC, but the ANZ Rewards conversion rates are not that good.

      • How do you pay PostBillPay with Paypal?
Can only find this but has no options for Paypal

        Edit: nvm, found this

        • Even in the first link you posted, the PayPal option will appear after you enter the Biller Code and Ref No details.

      • Yeah, my old council allowed PayPal payments via Post Bill pay. Then moved and new council doesnt have the PayPal option. Which Amex out of interest? I think I got points with my Plat Edge.

Just signed up for ANZ black, are you saying the PayPal / postbillpay method won't work?

  • Coles Mastercard

    • Cheers, Just to confirm, you get FB points for council payments ?

      • As far as I know, yes.

My rates are $1100/year. That's 1100 points which is $5.50 which is a schooner of Reschs during Happy Hour so I'll admit I don't analyse the return that much.

This is ozbargain. Free beer… worth it!

  • You can use Beemit, they've just introduced a feature where you can Bpay with a credit card. That's only if they accept it though, some reject it.

    • I dont think there is a credit card that yields points on BPay now. Please mention one.

      • I'm on the CBA Ultimate card, Bpay via Beemit yields points.

        • Many bargainers already stocked up 10% off Coles MasterCard Giftcards for this purpose a week ago. The best way is still to take advantage of this kind of offer.

the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card defs does, I've been using it for a year to BPAY my rent and other bills, but now looking for another card that allows it

Is Beemit BPAY from credit card treated as cash advance?

      • Nope, I haven't been charged any interest or a cash advance fee using Bpay via Beemit.

I have notice some don't allow it, eg Council fees, when I try to bpay via a credit card via Beemit, it says this payee do not accept this type of payment.

That means it works like the normal bank credit card, you can only bpay from credit card if biller accept BPAY from credit card. You can check biller code on bpay website to see if they accept bpay from credit card.

          • @samehada: I can't be bothered checking, I just try it, if it works great, if not, I wouldn't try it again with that payer.

It works with the ATO by the way, no extra fees. So that means I can get points paying my taxes through my credit card to the ATO via Bpay on Beemit.

            • @techlead: this is a great way to BPAY with non-bank credit card. I have never been able to bpay with non-bank credit card before.

  • The best available way for anyone is to buy $500 MasterCard giftcard($5.95 fee) @ Au Post via Zip 2% cashback. Pay off Zip by your credit card later. Save about 1% plus points. If the payment is an option @ Au Post, pay directly with Zip.

    • Interesting idea. I just looked up zip pay's registration page and it says they 'may' perform a credit check. Then go on to say they use Equifax etc etc. So going to say this method will cost you a credit check. Same concept, but buying visa gift cards with discounted coles/woolies egift cards is an idea.

      • It is a "soft" check that is similar to energy provider or Telco. You do not find this record on the other 2 credit rating system at all.

        • Mine was a hard one, but it was only enquired on 1 bureau as you said

  • I wonder if the crypto.com Visa debit cards would still get the 2% cashback? I haven't paid council invoices with a debit card before, do they usually charge a fee?

    • No idea, but my crytpo sitch is down around 70% +, so using crypto to pay right now would be a bad idea.

As for a fee, no fee for using MasterCard/visa.

I recently bought up the Coles mastercards @ 10% off and paid rates with them. Couldn't find a $250 card though, but $100's are better than nothing.

      • True but not all cryptos, I hold onto mine long term but some are already back up to pre crash.

Our councils charge for Master/Visa but not sure about debit cards, I'd hope not.

Ah nice work, I heard about it but didn't see the deal.

    • Just read this now.
If anyone knows the merchant code for rates then I’d be able to tell you if it’s possible or not.

  • just choose from citipay all zip bpay ($2.50 fee) link zip to bundll card to get velocity points then link it to your credit card, beem it and sniip to maximise points

    • Holy cow batman… Can you give me the points accumulated/ costs scenario on a $2000 council bill.

Also, which of the above require credit checks.

      Cheers

  • if you dont have a citibank rewards card citipay all is free but its out. then zip is the next best choice if you have a 2 k limit do a bpay $1997.50 you get charged a $2.50 fee. then pay off with bundll card twice 1k limit only but you will get 1 point per $5. thus 400 velocity points is earned. then pay off your bundll card 1k twice using a rewards card depending on your card rewards type lets says 1 point per $1 so either QFF/ Vel 2000 points thus a total 2400 points velocity for a $2.50 outlay and a possible up to 2.5 months interest free between payments. but i think zip may increase fee soon>? all options will require an intitial credit checks expect bundll card performs id check and bank account transaction history check

    • Cheers. I've got a Citi card, but already have my Payall maxed to my limit. Thanks for the other tips.

  • do anyone know if ANZ rewards black card will consider payments made to council rates as 'eligible' purchase? their offer is spend $2k in 3 mths and get 80k points so just wondering if rates will qualify? TIA guys
