New Bedroom TV - Cheap 4K Vs Second Hand 1080P

Hi all,

Looking for some thoughts on a new TV for the bedroom, had a 42" JVC TV that was damaged in a recent move. Been looking at this one, will come to $279.10 delivered which I thought was pretty good for a 4K TV.

Though wondering if Devanti is a brand to stay away from, am I better off getting a name brand second hand 1080p TV from marketplace? I'll be using the TV with a chromecast w/ google tv so no need for the smarts.

Keen to hear anyone's thoughts.

Cheers

  • For me, I'd probably go with a new cheap one, just for the warranty - or better yet, a refurb unit of a good brand.

Do you expect to use the smart tv features of it? Cheap smart TVs are terribly slow and often don't get updates. Perfectly fine if you use an apple TV or streaming box though.

    • Yeah will only be using it with a Chromecast with Google TV, will keep the TV itself disconnected from the wifi.

    I'd get a decent name 2nd hand 1080P over a cheap 4k TV.

I'm sure you could find one for $100 - $150.

agree, plenty of cheap ones around $100 or less. I had same predicament when our 42" plasma died in our second living room, managed to pickup a 50" top of the range (from 2010) panasonic plasma for $100 and its been great. Great picture and sound quality and uses same remote as our other panasonic tv.

      • Hmm, my 10 year old V series died last year and my now 10 year old GT Series Panasonic Plasma is showing signs of imminent death. Pink Banding on Bright white screens.

        • That's just bad luck, however, you can't complaint too much about getting 10 years out of it.

What did you end up replacing with?

I plan to get a OLED when my TV dies or when they become semi-affordable for a 70+inch. Fortunately/unfortunately none of the 2 events has occurred
          .

          • @JimB: Nothing yet. But probably an OLED.

Hoping the GT Series survives until later in the year when the new model TV pricing drops. It doesn't get heaps of use as we have a Projector as well.

I was super tempted by the 55" LG GX deal at Myer last week and we would have jumped on it if my wife had responded in time! (Grrrr!)

            • @ESEMCE: Unfortunately due to Covid or whatever, OLEDs don't look like they will drop in price.

And since I have a 65inch Panasonic Plasma, I'm not going to replace it with anything but a larger size, unfortunately 77inch OLEDs are very very expensive.

          • @JimB: The GT30 (actually only 9 years old) died last week.
I'm actually pretty disappointed with the lifespan to be honest. Both were Made in Japan TV's and neither had excessive hours use. (I pulled off the back off both sets and neither showed any issue with capacitor bulging, so something else far less fixable has failed)
I expect any TV to last 10 years, and I expected higher end Made in Japan models to last longer than a regular set.

Bought a Sony 55" x9500g from Sony Seconds store on eBay to replace it.
Couldn't swallow the OLED pricing and it's a daytime use device more often than not, with the Projector being the primary night time device.
We'll make do with 1 TV for the time being.

            • @ESEMCE: I too expect would expect any TV to last 10 years, particularly if Made in Japan. Maybe you got unlucky.

Hopefully my plasma lasts another 3-5 years as I'm still happy with the PQ.

How's the PQ of the x9500g?

      • I've also got a Panasonic Plasma from 2010, a 65inch which I purchased new.

I've been lucky enough to say it's still working and the PQ is still very good, particularly when watching sports or FTA.

FTA is a shocker on some large 4k TV. I still watch FTA for the news.

Are you using it for 4K? Like do you have a PS4 Pro/PS5 or mainly use 4K Media/video?

    • +1

Yeah I could use it for 4K content, watch a lot of 4K remuxes via Plex on our main Sony 65". Though a 42" TV not sure if the difference between 4K and 1080p would even be that noticeable, especially distance from the bed, etc.

  • I'd spend a little more and get a entry level Samsung or Hisense

Replace the 65" with an 85" in your living room; and send the 65" into the bedroom.
    :)

I will bring up the topic with my better half tonight, wish me luck…

      • Good luck!
Our previous living room 70" is now in the bedroom… took some getting used to but now it makes sense especially with a late lie in on a Sunday morning.

There are 2 main activities for the bedroom and a tv shouldn't be one of them unless absolutely necessary… screen time in the bedroom tells your brain its not sleep time..

    • If both activities occurred nightly, then yes a tv shouldn't be required.. unfortunately once you have kids……..lol

Ironically we got rid of our TV in the bedroom once we had kids.

      • So true, i have two… and we are time poor as well.

        • We aren't that time poor, but my wife seems to have a headache every night.

I should get her to see a doctor.
