The enhanced ebook is currently available from Amazon for free, if you download it with you kindle or pc you will get the standard mobi ebook if you download it with an apple device you will recieve the enhanced version which includes an interactive map, audio extracts of key scenes and a hyperlinked character glossary.

I really hope he manages to finish all the books in the series before he dies, the guy is old, a heavy drinker and smoker, and obese and has stated that he'll have his notes destroyed so nobody else can finish the series if he dies before its finished.
I'd hate to see it go the way of the Dune series.
It is a continuing saga, with main characters changing as he progresses through the books, rather than a clear "Kill the evil overlord at the end of the nth book and never need to write another one" style series (such as Wheel of Time, Belgariad, LoTR). It would certainly be a shame if he died, as he is my favourite author, but it wouldn't leave an unsatisfied sour taste in the back of my throat because I 'don't know what happens next', such as would be the case with the clear good guy vs evil overlord style series.
How on earth can you put Lord of the Rings in your ranting of an nth book? Absolutely agree about Wheel or Time which goes nowhere every book and the Belgariad certainly started to get stale. I think you might have been referring to the Feist books that come out every few years. But…wait, were you NOT dissing on it?
I suppose he'll be under some pressure to complete the last two books, at least before the TV series catches up to him…

The main reason for the negative reviews is that Amazon had to remove the links to purchase books from the App as did many many other apps, they did this because apple started demanding a cut of the sale generated.
Pretty much what melmac77 said. The IOS app lacks the purchase feature because Apple wanted a 30% cut on sales through the app. App really didn't deserve the 1 star reviews though, idiots just shooting the messenger, because it's actually fine for what it does.
I found that, so went via the web on iPad instead, worked fine. Why bother using an app that has less features than the website? I understand the reasons why it is that way, just don't see the need to order via the app, then have to log in over the web to pay. May as well just use the web to start with.

great find but when i downloaded it into my ipad 1.0 with the kindle app, i tried to activate the other bits that it promised like interactive maps, audio, character profiles etc. but i can't. i've never relaly used the kindle app btw. all i see is the plain old book itself without anything else
Hi All :) I nearly posted this on ozbargain but I was convinced it was a pricing error and that it would be yanked within the hour. Just recently in the Amazon store there has been a few pre-orders incorrectly set at $0.00 this particular book switched from pre-order to available late yesterday and I incorrectly assumed that it's price would be corrected then but alas its still free! Awesome for us as quality Aussie ebook freebies are few and far between.

No probs, it's actually the third $0.00 pre-order I've recieved but the others were all corrected as soon as the release date had arrived so I was surprised when this one stayed free.

Great timing for me! I bought the box set from book depository for Christmas but while reading it recently I found that pages 184-249 were replaced by pages 601-664. So now I can read the missing pages without having the purchase a replacement.
I installed the Kindle for iPhone app, and downloaded it - it took about 20 minutes! I went to check the size of the file and the iPhone reports that the Kindle app is using 129MB. I know it's a big book, but that seems a little extreme to me.
All that added audio/visual does come at a price.
Another reason to buy the 64GB iPad……………..
That's actually an exceptionally poor reason to pony up for an expensive iPad.

I think the point I was trying to make was that ebooks and apps are getting bigger,and rather than buying a 16Gb or 32GB device, you may need one with larger storage, if you plan on keeping it.
Or you could get a device that actually allows you to plug in extra memory. Unlike anything Apple.
Don't forget that if you download it via Kindle 4 PC you only get the standard mobi book which is much smaller in size you can then send that to your ipad using whtever ereading app you usually use that is if you're only interested in the book and size is a concern.

How to use on iPad:
Run app and login/register with your Amazon email and password
Go to Amazon website (either on your PC or iOS device) and 'buy' book
To the right of the book click Actions—> Send to—> iPad
Run Kindle app (must be online) and it will automatically download the book to your iPad
(Seem to need to keep the Kindle app running until it completes, as switching apps doesn't download in the background)
As far as the book goes, it seems to have a few sample lines of audio from the audiobook version every couple of chapters, some basic maps and links to character profiles etc.
I didn't bother with your 4th-6th steps(digital items) I just purchased on my PC then opened my Kindle app on my iphone went to archived items and selected the GOT ebook, would've thought that the iphone and ipad version of kindle app would be the same.
There's no GOT ebook option as far as I can see.
My book didn't show up till I sent it from Amazon.
Sorry I shouldn't have used short hand under archived Items in the app it showed a list of every kindle book I've ever purchased I scrolled down untill I got to Game of Thrones and selected it then it started to download.

Not in any way negative about the deal, I found the "enhanced" book a bit of a disappointment on my Android phone:
Maps and character links are included (not sure about the audio, but it should be as well) - the maps are not that good quality and if you zoom in they do not look good. Those are large maps that are hard to see well zoomed out (at least on my phone - HTC Evo 3D). When you click a character link you are taken to a short explanation about the character. However clicking the intuitive (Android) "back" button takes you out of the book… no way to go back to the place you were.
Just my impressions…

If you guys are as rusty as me in regards to what the hell is going on in the saga, I found the following resource invaluable before reading the fifth book: Tower Of the Hand Book Guide.
It is good to be able to quickly (well relatively, compared to reading the whole series again) read summaries of the books, and great if you want to refresh your memory about a specific character. You can also set how many books you read at the top and the site will make sure to not show any spoilers.
I too was underwhelmed by the enhanced content the description stated "featuring an interactive map tracking main characters journeys" I did not notice the map being interactive in any way to be fair though I was viewing the content on an Iphone and it would probably be more suited to an Ipad, I was just happy to load the standard free ebook onto my sony ;)

Using the Kindle app on my iPad 1, I can only get the Audio extras to work (not sure exactly what they add to the experience), not the interactive map, nor the linked information on the characters.
Not sure why: is the Kindle app limited in what it can do?
I grabbed that Banana Hammock book - seriously disappointed. It wasn't funny, just crass and mysogynistic. Needs a serious injection of wit. Also, you need to turn off the crowd source highlighting option, or the hyperlinks won't work correctly.
