AC Installation - Compressor Installed Back to Back Vs near the ground

Hi guys,

I am considering to replace an AC unit as the AC seem to be stuck in the cooling mode (heating mode not working).

Currently the external compressor is installed sitting on bricks above the ground. We intend to perhaps tile the area in future so would like the compressor to be installed above ground - I am thinking perhaps installed the AC unit say 18 inches above ground using a wall bracket - but a mate is saying why not just installed this at high level (back to back) with the indoor blower.

I would like to know if there are any merits to install the compressor at high level (back to back) vs installing near the ground - apart from the fact that back to back installation is cheapest?

Thanks

High keeps some dirt and crap out also stops pets rubbing up on it and clogging with fur (have personally seen this).
High also means you could bump your head on it.

    • Thanks mate. That keeping dirt and stuff away is a good point.

    We looked at several options.

Elevated off the ground in the garage (that is quite open)
    On the Ground.
    On the Roof.

We opted for ground as it was cheapest, and easiest to access for maintenance.

It is sitting on rubber foots.

Theres not much benefits other than aesthetics but may be different for you depending on space.

Mine is not far from my BBQ and is a great table to put condiments and plates.

    • Thanks mate. Looks like this is all just aesthetics and no real technical merits of one type of install vs the other (apart from the keeping dirt and stuff if the unit is install higher).

  • What is your wall made from? Are there windows up higher near where it would sit? If it's not brick you might get more vibration and noise if it's mounted on the wall.

    • Hi mate, it is a double brick wall. No windows in that wall.

  • We replaced our main aircon a few years ago and this time mounted it on a bracket about a metre above the path where our old one sat.
The cabinet on the old compressor was rusting and was full of dirt etc which contributed to it needing replacement.
Being the height it is you are aware of it and no one bumps their head on it.
After these years it is still relatively clean and the cabinet is like new.

    • Thanks mate. That's a good info.

Does wall mounting mean that your neighbour gets a good view of it? Could become a noise issue.

    • Good point. Guess that’s the reason the previous owner of the house choose to install the ac closer to the ground.

  • Make sure if it’s high up it’s high enough that you don’t hit your head if in a walkway area.

Has to lift ours because it was ‘climable’ next to a pool fence. I can walk under it easily even though it’s in an area you wouldn’t normally walk.

I know of one at a school that regularly gets clipped by the top of the ride on mower.

    • Thanks mate
