20% off Plex Lifetime Pass (A$127.99) @ Plex.tv

1020
MEDIAGEEK

LIFETIME $127.99 AUD
20% off RRP$159.99
Apparently it is a 24 hour sale but not really sure how long it is going to be up for due to international time zones. Please note that this is often sold at 25% off but I thought I'd post it up in case someone wanted it now.
The key thing is that this is NOT TARGETED so you do not need to wait in hope of a random email being sent to you.

i bought one in the past, dont know if ive ever used it (as opposed to just the base product), but Plex is such a great product i wanted to support the developers.

    • +7

I did the same. The amount I use it, I'm happy to pay them for their great product.

    • I was the same ie just paid the money to support them - but a while back I managed to get a good price for a HDHomeRun so now I do take advantage of the lifetime subscription to use that to do timeshift. Soon I'll be out of contract with Optus so might send the Fetch box back (which is now mainly used as a DVR) to save some money and hop over to Aussie Broadband or similar.

  • is this the cheapest? Currently using on for streaming from RP2, would like to setup as back up for photos since google is ending its free upload this month.

    • +4

Targetted deals come around fairly often to people for $99, but this is still a great price.

      • thanks. Will wait for <$99 deal

        • +4

It's not that often. It might be 2 or 3 years before you get the email. Which by that time you'd be better if having bought this deal. I waited 3 years and never got the email so just bought at this price 2 years ago. Zero regrets. I'd just jump on this price.

          • @bunnybash: just checked my emails and i was always targeted, but was ignoring them. might keep eye for the next turn.

            • +1

@hopper: Just to add to that, if you are already on a monthly plex pass, you will NEVER be targeted for discounted life time passes. So this is as good as it gets i reckon.

              • @WhatsTheBigDeal: Nah, i was on and off with monthly pass and still got offered that discount but never bothered.

          • @bunnybash: I got the email in April to an old email address. I missed out on 30% off. :(

I emailed to get the promo but no luck.

    • I hope you haven’t pulled the trigger. Camera upload is ending next month!

      https://forums.plex.tv/t/important-info-about-camera-upload-…

      • Not yet, Thx for sharing. Guess plex didn't want my money
Say to see they are removing it due to less users, actually the user count will increase since Google photos will end in few days. May be they anticipated the load

Plex is awesome with compatible TVs - usually tvs bought in the last 5 or so years.

    • +3

works fine with even older ones as plex servers can do DLNA too.

        • Can you play your personal content from Plex on Google TV?

          • @saffers: Yes.

            • @hopper: Thanks, I`ll have to revisit this then - I installed Plex on my Google TV and linked it but it did not show any of my content.

              • @saffers: I'm betting you fell victim to the new unified view thing - I know I did a couple of times. It's not that it's not there, it's just that for some God-forsaken reason the default is to pin only the generally shared Plex content on the sidebar when you first start out.
You have to modify it to show your own content on there… Not in front of it now but off the top of my head you can expand the menu down below and it lets you pick your own host and content.

        • My Samsung can't play anything on plex, always gets a media error.forums say this issue has been plaguing Samsung for years.

Had to buy the Google TV chromecast.

          • @krisspy: never had issues on my samsung TV's (2014, 2017 and 2020). Some times you need to update the plex server that is running (inc plugins)

            • @hopper: Mines a 2020 q70, I've tried everything even using beta versions of the app. What type of media can you play on yours? I have a feeling it's got something to do with Movies that have dts-ma audio.

              • @krisspy: most formats play on mine without issue. never tried dts-ma, might try tonight and update

This doesnt work if your Paypal account is AU "Selected country (BR) does not match PayPal country (AU)"

    • +3

Tried to do this the other week, keep getting an error saying my paypal country didn't match. They also blocked using PayPal without an account which would have got around that.

    • +1

I did this a couple months ago and it worked for me, unsure about specific details or steps I took

    • Appears they fixed this loophole last year.

    • ok

  • Thanks! Convenient time for me to upgrade, it applied $7 credit remaining from my previous yearly and the 25% discount to upgrade to lifetime :)

  • +3

i bought a plex lifetime pass many years ago and it has been one of the best things ive ever bought. it only gets better with time

    • +2

      Hey Buddy,

Curious, what kind of features do you personally use with the lifetime pass?

      • +5

not sure what perks have changed but i use it to stream to devices when not at home and sharing with friends and stuff. you can cap the bandwidth and transcoding etc.. so they dont eat all your bandwidth.

mostly the remote access without needing to fiddle with things like dyndns etc… it makes it super easy

        • +1

You don't need plex pass for those things though.

          • @MrFunSocks: oh really? not sure that was the case when i bought it.

the new skip intro feature is really good.
can you do offline sync without a plex pass? thats super handy for road trips with kids

      • +9

You’re not asking me, but I’ll chime in anyway.
I really like Plexamp, which is only available to Plex Pass holders.

I have my music collection from pre-streaming all sitting on my Plex server, and Plexamp is a really nice way to stream it all to my phone.

Plex Pass also unlocks hardware accelerated transcoding which makes transcoding possible on lower power hardware, or makes it less power hungry on more powerful hardware.

        • Plexamp is so amazing, it's totally changed the way I listen to my music. Love it.

          • @Madrical: What's special about it? Their website didn't make a compelling case for it.

            • @Diji: It's just a very easy way to curate your own music library. Since the transition to streaming I was really missing having my own library that I can easily browse and this gives me exactly that. Using Spotify or GPM often made me just listen to something in my "recently listened" list so I'd listen to the same stuff over & over. Plexamp allows for easy browsing of albums.
Plus the app is just really clean; no bloat, lots of options, very easy to use.

  • +5

Handy to have, auto subtitles, hardware accelerated transcoding, skipping intros, plex dash

  • thanks OP, upgraded my existing monthly plan which i have been using since about 8 months now, doubt i'll ever stop using it now so this is a good deal.

  • Hey all,

How does Plex work exactly? Can one use it instead of Google photos?

    Thanks

    • +3

umm no. There is no real substitute for gphotos.

This is mainly for video content from the high seas.

      • +1

You can set up a similar service on most NAS devices like Synology, but I personally wouldn’t advise any friends or family to use that kind of setup - there are performance, maintenance and security considerations that I just don’t think are worth the hassle for the everyday user.

      • What is "the high seas"?

        An alternative to TPB?

        • Just pirating in general. Torrents, direct downloads and the like.

          • +2

            @Caped Baldy: ohhhh got you.

It didn't help that when I googled it there is a Netflix show of the same name. I was thinking.. geez.. it must be popular.

I guess people need a way to justify their pirating.

        • Perhaps travellers on the high seas would be easier to understand?

      • Plex does have a Camera Roll backup feature though. Haven't used it myself though so can't vouch for it, but I know the option exists.

    • It's like a curator for media. Think of it as your own Netflix, but you have to provide your own Movies and store it somewhere.

  • +2

Oh yay thanks for sharing this :)

Not only did I get a discount, but I can unsubscribe from “Plex” in OzB’s notifications and it will stop all the useless NAS deals I’m getting aha.

And Plex credited me part of my monthly fee. Winning!

Is there something like Google photos that stores videos as I'm finding that many of my videos are not uploading to Goggle photos and they are taking up heaps of space in my phone .

Thanks all for your responses :)

    • What videos are you trying to upload? Google photos has a limit of 10gb so unless you're trying to upload bootlegs (which is a stupid f*kn idea for obvious reasons) then you shouldn't have a problem.

If YOU ARE using Google photos for bootlegs then go get a gsuit account from aliexpress for $3.

If you're legitimately using Google photos as intended, then there's nothing better for Android. ITunes, Amazon photos, I drive would be your best bet but they ain't free.

      • Microsoft Office 365 includes 1tb of OneDrive… it will auto upload from your camera roll

      • When you have kids it doesn't take long to have gigs and gigs of photos/videos of them.

  • My mates added me to his plex library (high seas stuff being hosted from a gsuite in Germany) and it seems I can do everything already that people have mentioned here? Like stream on the go with multiple devices, transcode to lower bit rates, subtitles etc…

I guess is more useful to the actual host of the media?

    • Sounds exactly like my setup on Gsuite and Hetzner, haha. Yeah only the server owner technically needs Plex Pass to allow downloads for all users/accounts. Plex Pass is not that useful for end users, as you can buy the one-time iOS/Android mobile unlock for $7 instead and TV's have unlimited playback regardless.

Jellyfin is worth looking into as a free, open source Plex alternative. It's quite stable and fully featured nowadays.

    • +2

2nd this! Im using jellyfin and it's been great.

    • +1

Yeah jellyfin great, just waiting for a better android tv app.

  • Can anyone recommend a good plex client? I've got a Hisense TV that's only a few years old, but the built in plex app runs like shit. If possible I'm after something that can play 4k streaming from a local server and can use HDMI-CEC to control with the existing TV remote. Do current model raspberry pis work well for this? Thanks!

    • +3

Chromecast with Google TV is great. The ultimate Plex client though is the NVIDIA Shield. For most the shield is overkill especially if you have a decent server and Plex pass.

      • Currently using new chromecast as well. Handles 50gb uncompressed remuxes with dts-ma stuff easily. Included remote can control the TV inputs, power and volume.

      • Yeah the Shield is overkill for most, unless you want to watch 4K Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby Vision/Atmos uncompressed etc. For the majority of people the Chromecast with Google TV is ideal.

      • I've been looking at getting the shield for my setup. Apparently the latest shield version let's you add in external hdds and whatnot, which sounds perfect for what I want. Do you know if I get that if I'll be able to download stuff on my computer and have it be added to the shield over the network?

Quick glances around show plugging in a hdd with media there, but I don't know if I can just download directly to it, or if I should get an optiplex next time it's on sale instead (though then I'd be missing out on AI up scaling if I do?)

        • To be honest I'd just go with having Plex server setup on your home box and use Chromecast to grab the data. You don't need to worry about things like external HDDs etc as it will always we available on the Plex server.

What I do when I travel is take my GL-AR750 portable router with me plus my Chromecast and just set myself up in whatever hotel I'm in and stream my TV shows directly to the TV that way. Because I'm a Lifetime Plex subscriber I can also just download all the TV shows and Movies I wanted to watch that weekend onto my device and push it out directly to the Chromecast without having to smash my Home PC uploads nor the Hotel Wifi.

Basically getting a Chromecast with Plex makes things really flexible.

          • @danielh: The problem for me is I handle all the media for my friends and family, and my home computer has a 1tb drive, which is rapidly filling up of stuff I've got to watch.

We've got a ps4 we watch plex through on the main TV, and a chromecast too at home, but the shield is more for everyone else - as is the extra storage. I also don't always have my laptop connected to the Internet when I take it places, hence the toss-up between the shield or a dedicated computer

        • +1

I currently run my plex server through my nvidia shield as I didn't want to have a pc chewing through power just sitting idle most of the time.

I have a 5tb portable usb drive plugged in that's powered by the shield and holds all my movies and TV shows. I also have 500gb ssd drive connected to manage all my library files, cover art etc. Works really well. I only serve content to about 5 family members but they never complain about quality etc.

I mapped the usb drives on the shield to my home network so I just download my content onto my laptop and then once done just drag and drop onto the shield. Cover art etc is usually auto done by plex but after dropping it on the usb but you can always tweak it if plex gets confused.

The shield allows hardware transcoding without a plex pass too which is nice. Most I've had going at one time is two remotes transcodes and two direct streams at one time and it didn't skip a beat.

          • @finger: That sounds exactly like what I'm after! Does plex automatically make the cover art and library files into the ssd automatically? Or do you do it manually?

            • @Opaquer: It does it automatically. If it doesn't find a suitable cover art you can upload from the Web the cover art you prefer. Takes all of 1 min to do. The only thing I recommend is you following the naming conventions plex recommends so you don't need to manually adjust things, then it will usually get it right 99% of the time.

              • @finger: Yeah, I've got plex atm and have been using it for years, but have never played around with the settings enough to realise that it can save all that stuff in a separate folder, and definitely didn't realise the shield could do it!

In hindsight it makes perfect sense, but I just never put 2 and 2 together!

      • Household members of mine have found buffering issues with the chromecast with Google TV Plex app for live TV. Even using the $30 Ethernet power adapter.

Not everyone uses the Live TV feature on Plex with a HDHomerun. A solution is to use the HDHomerun android TV app on the Chromecast with Google TV.

    • Nvidia Shield TV (4k) is great and also the Xiaomi Mi TV Box S (4k) are a pretty good alternatives.

      • As an end user, I run it through my MeCoool M8S Pro Android box, and it is a smooth as silk.

I have only ever paid for the Android app.

    • I'd vote for the Nvidia shield. It can act as both server and client and is pretty bullet proof.

  • Thanks, was waiting for one of these to come along!

  • Perfect, thanks. I've held off for years because the free tier did the job, but now I've got multiple clients running off a NAS server, and was paying monthly for Pass. Good of them to credit the remaining month's fee!

  • +1

I keep putting off grabbing a lifetime as it takes 3 years on the yearly subscription to break even and ive always thought I probably stop using plex within 3 years…… its been 5 years now

    • Can't see a day when I'd stop using Plex and the skip intro feature is sooo convenient!

    • thanks for this i feel so much better jumping in to this deal after just 8 months of monthly pass use :) :)

FYI I recently got a VPN set up on my PC the other day and it works behind that as well. Just trying to get my VNC to work behind a VPN right now.

For those who want to know how to do it from behind a VPN, go to:
Plex>Account>Settings>Network>Preferred network interface>Select the VPN network you have from the drop down box. When you turn off your VPN, it will default back to the normal IP setup and revert back to the VPN when you turn it back on

    • Sorry if this is a dumb question but does this mean that plex is running through the vpn even on devices such as your TV or is it only running through the vpn on your computer or device that has the vpn app?

      • +1

My Plex SERVER is running through the VPN. I have not tested to see what it runs through when I use it from my local network hooked in via TV or Chromecast.

    • What’s the benefit of the plex server running on a vpn? Wouldn’t it limit the bandwidth?

      • +1

I wanted to have a VPN for the usual reasons but discovered that with it on, PLEX as originally set up would not work outside of my home network, hence the need to do that tip I posted earlier. If I could work it out I'd prefer to NOT have it running through the VPN but right now I can't figure out how to do it.

Fortunately my uploads do not seem to be impacted with or without VPN but my DOWNLOADS have dropped from 260Mbps to 75Mbps. I only just got VPN yesterday so I'm still working out what the limitations are and trying to work around them (eg PLEX and VNC).

  • Been waiting for years, finally purchasing, thanks!

  • Jellyfin would be nice.

  • Jellyfin is free, check it out before paying for Plex.

  • Do I need this if I have ATV + Infuse? No problem playing 4k movies

The only reason for getting a plex pass is for remote access and maybe PlexAmp?

    • …and to be able to download all your shows remotely to your devices when traveling (pre COVID this was a game changer), live stream of TV (via my tv dongle hooked to my PC so I could watch AFL when overseas etc. There are a few other benefits but I have been a lifetime subscriber for so long that I don't know what is and is not a perk anymore.

      • How are you watching footy? My partner wants to watch it in the kitchen, where there is no aerial connection and although we can put a screen in there, a screen doesn't have the aerial input since it's not a tv..

    • For me it was hardware transcoding as I have a few users connected to my plex server

  • Thank you and signed up for lifetime membership.
