Doesn't fit in bath as well as toaster from previous bargain

  • I had an elderly neighbour who used to say, “don’t stand in front the microwave” we used to laugh her, however you would have to question how much radiation that was leaking out of a $30 microwave.

700W microwave isn't that powerful haha

Even the cheapest microwave should be able to protect quite well as it's not difficult to create a Faraday cage (which is what a microwave is).

If you are concerned, you can always unplug the microwave, place you phone in it and try to call it. If you have difficulty, then that's a good sign.

        • I'm not concerned about the protection, I'm concerned about the output

          • @pennypincher98: I'd think most people would pony up the extra dough for a better microwave, but I think this is almost the perfect uni student appliance as it costs next to nothing.

        • +1

That test would be a pointless test. Phone's use a range of frequencies, many of which microwaves are not designed to shield.

In the freak case that your microwave is leaking a large amount of radiation, it's still non-ionizing radiation. The only harm is if you literally start to feel yourself cooking.

    700 watt?

Honestly, don't bother. It would take a very long time to heat up leftovers from the freezer.

    • I think most microwave instructions are based on 900w which isn't too much of an increase from 700. It will take longer, but at most I'd say 30% longer.

Standard is 1000 watt. I had one as a loan unit when my main one died and waiting for it to be repaired. It's not a straight 30% more time due to wattage being 30% less. It takes much longer, especially for frozen meals/reheating leftovers.

Agreed. Waste of money when you're only going to upgrade down the line. Had a Kmart one that served its purpose until I could afford better stuff in my home. Honestly the long reheating times got to me, so got a LG 1000W one.

I bought an 800W Sharp 15 years ago and it's been disappointing the whole time. I can't wait for it to break because I'm too cheap to replace it.

Same here with an 800w Samsung. Lately it’s had an electrical burning smell so fingers crossed it’s on the way out!

I wouldn't buy a non-inverter microwave, no matter watt the wattage.

      • +1

I see what you did there…

      • So you want to cook food, instead of simply reheating leftovers?

    • +2

"very long time" is probably a bit of an exaggeration. Putting 700w into the food for 3 min is going to be essentially the same as putting 1000w in for just over 2.

Sure i would prefer not having to wait ~50% longer but it isn't going to be a deal breaker for everyone.

      • +3

Well yeah of course. But I found a 7 minute frozen meal would take 12-13 minute to heat properly. You also need to constantly check as the guidance in packs are usually for 1000 watt. It's just a hassle. I was glad to get rid of mine when I did.

Is there a child lock so the kids can't get out?
