Bunnings has small ones for $159 http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_flat-roof-kennel…
Is there a cheaper one elsewhere?
Is it better to try building one yourself? Or finding a DIY kit?
Any help would be much appreciated (from my dog).

Ah that seems pretty good if it was just for sleeping. But I also plan to let the dog eat inside as it will be sleeping in there for the majority of the day so we'd like something bigger.
Thanks a lot for your input!
Our dog owns this house and he really loves it, very roomy, we lined it with carpet, chuck in an old doona, doggy heaven….they're not cheap but are a better quality option with a good roof and solid walls.

Pity you are not in Melbourne, there is one on eBay for $100. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aarons-Outdoor-Large-Dog-Kennel-/…
We had one very much like the Bunnings one, the wood is thinner and is less solid. Kinda crap overall to be honest.

no - but we are!!!! Thanks for the heads up!
I probably can't afford that kind of house but thanks to you I'm now looking at eBay.
Thanks all!
Wouldn't it just be cheaper to agree with everything your wife says? Then you wouldn't have to buy a doghouse to spend so much time in there :P

Rspca or similar rehoming service. You can usually get a microchipped, desexed wormed and vaccinated dog for less than you'd pay at the vet for desexing microchipping and vaccination.
For instance, our most recent dog we paid $400, which is the 'puppy' rate (up to 4 months.) Anything older than that is $350. The local vets charge from around $250 or so for desexing a small male dog - add to that $65 for vaccinating and $70 to $80 for microchipping - all already done.
Obviously you may have to make a few trips before finding the ideal dog for you, or alternately many have online sites which they update regularly, listing the dogs they have at the time.
I ended up getting one off eBay for $85 including shipping.
Not that great, considering the seller sold it as low as $70 at some points.
We have the hard plastic one. Light and really easy to clean. And only $89
