      Ban COTD please!!!

  • think im just going to take the $10
    netbook originally 350
$50 off credit, $100 cash back, $20 shipping delay & $10 battery stuff up.

netbook is realistically now $170 2 year warranty, and 3G

could just buy a $30-$40 battery on ebay… then will have 2 batteries.. not sure of the quality though…

so i dont think i have been ripped off.. well i hope not..

could always return it.. but is it worth it? what else would you get?

show me a better netbook for $170 with 2years warranty…

  • How do I raise a support ticket please to pick my option? Logged in to COTD but can't see where to raise ticket.

    • Follow the link in the email you received from COTD.

    • +1

Hi.. If you can't raise a support ticket, send them an email with your order no, SNID number and state that you want option 1. I send mine yesterday before lunch and have the $10.00 refund already credited back to my credit card .

      This is thier reply afterwards:

      Hi John,

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I've gone ahead and refunded the $20 to your bank account, this should show up in the next 2-3 business days.

We will forward your SNID information onto Acer, they will then update your Warranty Term.

Thank you once again for your understanding, please do not hesitate to contact me again for any further queries.

      Kind regards,

      Derek
      Customer Service Crew

      • +1

why did they refund you $20?

        • Sorry, I should have mentioned that I got a second one after the $20.00 original refund. That's way it's $20.00.
So at the end of the day the first one cost me $189.00 and second one $$169.00 after hopefully I get ACER cashback.!!!

  • How do you claim cashback.. i went to register on site last night and it took a million years to load and I didnt get a number? No email? Terrible ACER.

    • Go to here: http://www.shopacer.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Load… enter your SNID and it should be fairly straight forward. You get a PDF to stick your barcode to to send in.

If you have not got a confirmation email I would try again until you do.

      Was straight forward for me.

      As per the site:

      For any queries, please contact:
      http://helpdesk.acer.com.au/
      or
      (02) 8762 3264
(STD and Mobile call charges as per your Carrier)

    • Same problem. Submitted claim cashback, site wasn't functioning properly at the time. Tried to register again but "SNID already in-use". Didn't receive any emails. Made a call to Acer. They then send an e-mail containing the Cashback Claim Number. But there's nothing to print out in the Claim status page. There is no PDF, no contact details/forms. It gives me this:

      Cashback Claim Number: <removed>
      Claim Status:
      Pending Supporting Document(s)
      Correct Claim form processed: No
      Correct Tax Invoice processed: No
Correct SNID barcode cut-out from carton processed: No
Please note: It may take up to 6 weeks within the total 8 week period for your claim
to be processed. We are unable to verify receipt of documents until they have been
      processed.

      • it will take a while for those details to change, they only update it once they receive the documents and process them

        • I forgot to mention haven't been able to mail the cashback claim because of that. There's no documents to to send to them.

  • I have no idea here, I can't go to the link so how I can claim the cashback now then?

    • Google ACER homepage then bottom of the page, right handside is "cashback" link. Click on that and the cashback form should pop up…

  • I'm sending mine back and have printed off the Reply Paid details. What about registering the parcel incase it gets lost in transit? Does the Reply Paid details cover that or do we have to pay that fee ?

    • As soon as you declare you want a refund, the laptop becomes the responsibility of COTD

      • You still need evidence to prove that you have sent the netbook to COTD. A regular mail receipt does not show whom/where you sent goods to.

  • So is everyone saying this netbook from COTD comes with 24 months warranty without us having to do/register anything?

    • A little confused, as COTD says we only have 12 months :S

  • +3

Not worth the effort, accept the $10 refund and 24 month warranty and agree to never deal with cotd again. And warn others of your experience.

At the end of the day they will lose much more money than if they just replaced our batteries.

these are still for sale, listed with the correct specs and advertised as brand new… what I want to know is are they going to palm off our returned laptops as brand new??

Anyone tried the GPS on this yet? It's built into the Ericsson 3G card and should show up in Device Manager under "Ports". So far I have it on COM5 feeding into Google Earth. This Lenovo software works with it http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?Legacy… as they both run the same 3G/GPS chipset, but it took ages to get a fix.

Is it common for 3G cards to have GPS capability?

  • Anyone have the email for ACER or Acer Cashback customer support??

I sent the claim forms via express post and still it says

    Claim Status:
    Pending Supporting Document(s)

    Correct Claim form processed: No

    Correct Tax Invoice processed: No

Correct SNID barcode cut-out from carton processed: No

Please note: It may take up to 6 weeks within the total 8 week period for your claim to be processed. We are unable to verify receipt of documents until they have been processed.

      yeah same as me

      Cashback Claim Number: N858*****

      Pending Supporting Document(s)

      Correct Claim form processed: No

      Correct Tax Invoice processed: No

Correct SNID barcode cut-out from carton processed: No

      • how are you checking the status of your cash back? which site is this at?

  • i just checked my status and this is what it says:

    Cashback Claim Number: N858*****
    Claim Status:
    Processing

Estimated completion date: 06 April 2012

On approval of your Acer Cashback, a cash card will be issued and sent to the address below.

You guys do realise that you're sending these to a PO box? They may only check it once every two weeks.

    • It's all good … This is my 6th time claiming ACER cashback rebates. Never had problems with their rebates. It does take around 6 weeks …

  • Acer has received one of my cashback claims… Got an email confirmation. Now for the second one and to actually receive the cards…

    • 2nd received.

  • got an email confirmation as well…All good

  • Still no email and no status change. How long ago did you guys mail your claims?

    • +1

Mate, don't stress - when you check your status you probably noted this message below it - could take weeks for them to even open your envelope and start to process it.

      From their claims check page:

"Please note: It may take up to 6 weeks within the total 8 week period for your claim to be processed. We are unable to verify receipt of documents until they have been processed."

  • Mine was receipted online within a week of posting from Melbourne, but yeh will be waiting a few weeks now to get the actual cards I am sure.

  • how are you checking the status of your cashback claim? I can't seem to find anything on their website.

    • nevermind.. i found it here.. http://www.shopacer.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Clai…

mehhh… mines no good at all!!! i sent it off within a 1 day of receiving the netbook:

      Cashback Claim Number: XXXXXXXX
      Claim Status:
      Pending Supporting Document(s)

      Correct Claim form processed: No
      Correct Tax Invoice processed: No
Correct SNID barcode cut-out from carton processed: No
Please note: It may take up to 6 weeks within the total 8 week period for your claim to be processed. We are unable to verify receipt of documents until they have been processed.

    selling the returned netbooks…
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

    • +1

And the discount code still works.

      • wonder if the cashback is still valid like they say…

still very tempting even with the current specs, a laptop for 200 bux… shame it hasnt got HDMI… how do they go decoding h254/full HD content? could use a USB dongle and would make a decent media centre….

        • +2

Mine does fine on 720p. 1080p doesn't fare well.

Games wise, as it doesn't have OpenGL they older games run fairly poorly unless they are ported - aka DosBox emulation is rubbish for most things (a la build engine games) but as soon as you use a port like eDuke or Doomsday the games run great.

This thing is great with Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D and all the Dooms/Hexens/Heretics, Blood is passable but hasn't been properly ported so isn't amazing.

Games like Bookworm and Plants vs Zombies are good too. Jamestown for instance runs like crap though.

This is with 2GB which makes negligible difference to games, but should help multitasking (I detected an increase)

Also I bought a 9-Cell battery from ebay and it is great. Goes up to about 8-9hrs battery life (via windows estimation) which is about right being that the 3-cell is about 3 hours. The thing does stick out a fair bit however but actually acts as a sort of laptop stand. I'll post some pics if anyone is interested.

  • I have lodged a formal complaint with Consumer Affairs Victoria.
Thiefsie, can you please share the details of your purchase of 9 Cell Battery & post pics, if possible.

    • I bought this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270845908057?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN… when it was on sale for $35.20 postage included. I'll post pics in a day or two when I get some time at home.

Still fits fine in the included neoprene case with this battery, though the shape is like a wedge. For the extra time it gives me on a flight or something I don't mind at all.

GPS works on the modem, although I can't get it going with google maps for instance - though I have not tried at all.

I have not activated my vodafone prepaid mobile net yet to see if it works but I have no doubt it will.

My only gripes apart from cotd issues are that the screen isn't great (laggy and bad verticle angles) and that on the back of the screen on the white cover there is actually light bleeding through from the backlight where holes are in the internal case etc which is a little funny. It matters not at all however. The vid driver can only drive native res 1024x600 or lower externally from my testing so hardly worth plugging into anything, which makes it being VGA only not that much of a bother.

Shall be great when I'm travelling. Mine's loaded up with Photoshop/Lightroom and Office and a few games all ready to go.

I haven't decided whether to format to Windows Pro. The networking stuff would be a little more useful but otherwise I can live without being able to customise my wallpaper.

      • I can get mine hooked up to an external monitor (15" 1024 x 768) and drive both the screens simultaneously (extended desktop).

Also I have 3G running with Blink It (Optus line) perfectly :)

Ordered a 9-cell from an ebay seller from Hong Kong but seems like it will take sometime.

      • After formatting and installing windows 7 ultimate, the laptop works like a charm. No more lag issue associated with bloatware and no more network restrictions from windows 7 starter.

i upgraded the ram to 2gb & and dropped a 64Gb solid state drive.. works like a dream and compared to my macbook air its pretty much just as fast… very happy!!! $298 - $99 cash back - $20 store credit - $10 money back from COTD = $169 + $120 for upgrades = $289 for a 3g netbook thats actually powerful a dream!

        • Can you please outline the steps required to install the 3g modem drivers ? I tried sticking in a sim card but 3g Connection Manager still says "no 3g device detected"

  • Hi all.. I worked out how to use the Next G Modem software with any 3G SIM - not just Telstra.. if you need info let me know! Happy to share… :)

I have a normal post paid wireless SIM however it kept coming up saying 'prepaid account isn't activated' - got around it without having to install other software.

    • +1

some details would be good. :)
      please share

      • Keep your finger on the 'Shift' button then click on tools, then 'Options'.

You will get a new tab called 'Diagnosis', in there click on 'Signup has been completed for this device' then Device type to 'TMB' - in my case I am using a wireless post paid SIM plan.

If your using another carrier's SIM, go to the 'Connection' tab, and change the 'APN' to that provider (just google something like Optus APN'.

        Should work!!!

Better than mucking around with drivers etc etc

        :)

  • Jesus the cash back takes ages… just checked the status and this is what I see:

    Casshback Claim Number: NXXXXXXXX
    Claim Status: Processing

Estimated completion date: 04 April 2012

On approval of your Acer Cashback, a cash card will be issued and sent to the address below.

    Name: XXX
    Address: XXXX

    • has anyone received theirs?

      • Still waiting ezza

        • yeh, still waiting

      • Not yet!

    • Claim Status:
      Processing

Estimated completion date: 06 April 2012

    • Mine was saying the 4th of April too. Just checked and its magically jumped to 19th!

      Really bad form Acer!

  • Does anyone have a copy of the original ad with a 6 hour battery life. I have taken up the case with Consumer Affairs Victoria and they need to see it. Catch of the Day has again been shifty as they have changed the original ad to reflect a 3 hour battery life.

    • nope…. side question though.. exactly what do you think Consumer Affairs is going to do… Not trying to back up COTD but they did offer a $10 refund, also provided us buyers with a $20 credit to use on COTD and provided us with the option to return for full refund… really I dont think Consumer Affairs will do anything further - the refund option was offered.. but i'd like to see where it goes :)

    • I have a copy on file if you want it. You will probably need to PM me your e-mail so I can send it.

  • So I brought this 9 cell battery from ebay - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/250919381919?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

I've plugged it in and charged it… wait for it.. shows 11 hrs battery life!!! bahhahaa incredible!

Only downer is that it comes out the backside of the netbook and kinda tilts it.. it fits well though..

I guess we need to sacrifice if we want battery life… but I'll surely recommend it!!

    :)

    • +1

Thanks for the letting us know ezza, thinking of getting one for the wife's netbook..

Does it restrict how far you can open the screen?

The reason I ask is that I bought a 9 cell battery for my Toshiba and yep, it lasts for over 4 hours..only drawback is that I need to flip it up on a ridiculous angle so that the keyboard rests on my chest to read the screen!

PS My cashback arrived earlier this week…a tip when activating your card, remove the 0 when entering your SNID (if 0 is the first digit of your SNID)..Wouldn't activate until I did that.

      • hey mate… no it doesn't restrict your screen at all!! the 'hump' bit it on the bottom, so it boosts up a notch.. only other downfall is it wont fit comfortably in a sleeve though.. so take that into consideration when deciding.. however if your using a laptop bag of some sort your all fine :)

      • Thanks for the tip to remove "0" from SNID - was about to call customer service, until I saw your post. Thanks!

  • Still no cashback here…

  • Card arrived, haven't activated it yet.

  • got my card :D

  • Yep got my $99 card too!!! yahhhooo!!! :)

  • got my card….A+++

  • +1

Card arrived standard mail in BRISBANE 4/4/2012
Needs to be activated online using SNID and 16 digit code onback of card, then valid from 2pm next day.

  • received my eftpos card too!

  • Card arrived today :-)

  • Card arrived today… however when I enter card number and SNID (from bottom of laptop) its reporting that it doesn't match their records…

    • +2

drop the first zero from the SNID. I had to ring them to find this out

  • Well I used my card and i can report it worked at point of sale!!

  • +1

Where can you use the card? Tried it at Coles and it did not work saying pin was incorrect which I had double checked.

    Edit, problem solved:
Called cashcard people and the problem was that Coles checkout chick did not put $99 in the transaction amount and tried to process a higher amount because Coles Myer cards go through normally while cashcards must only be the exact amount or lower.

  • CAn u get cash out from coles' eftpos?

    • Tried it… Didn't work
