Why no raffles?

Why aren’t raffles allowed in the competition section but “purchase required” comps are when they are basically the same thing?

The product is just a raffle ticket in disguise.

As long as they are clearly marked as (RAFFLE) in the post’s title and are from known & reputable Australia-wide organisations (ie. not community or sports club raffles etc.) so as not to waste people’s time who have no interest in raffles then what is the problem with allowing them for people like me who are raffle fiends as well as comp fiends?

Not to mention most raffles are for charity so raising awareness for them on a site with such a massive user base would also be doing good for the world in a non-consumerism centric way that the rest of the site is dedicated to (not complaining, have found many a bargain on here being the rabid tech consumer I am).

Or even a sub-section of the comps forum dedicated to raffles maybe.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'd say, yes raffles are ultimately good for the charity and awareness, but it can straddle the line of gambling.

As soon as you start paying money for a chance of gaining something of more value it becomes a bit of a grey area.
Purchase required comps i guess you're actually getting something in return for your money.

purchase required is purchasing something tangible, no comparison

The raffle ticket is just gambling in disguise.

  • I get your points about raffles technically being gambling, but has anyone ever heard of someone getting hooked on raffles in the same way as actual gambling?

Raffles don’t provide the instant gratification of more traditional methods that problem gamblers or people with addictive tendencies are after.

I hear you, but ultimately a raffle is a gamble. I'll define it (to separate it from "purchase required" deals) as a situation where you pay money, get nothing of intrinsic value in return, for the chance of a prize.

"Raffles" don't tend to attract "gamblers" as the return even on the top prize is typically pretty low and usually is not a cash prize, but not necessarily always.

I've noticed the traditional lotteries in NSW are now being advertised as "raffle-style games" … take from that what you will.

  • Lotto is banned as well…

    Same same

Yeh ok, fair enough all, I can accept when I am defeated.

Now, can anyone please direct me to a site that is fine with compiling raffles in a similar vain to how OzB compiles comps?

    Thanks a lot.

    • There'll probably be a subreddit that exists for that kind of stuff
