Put manga in the description. I actually thought this was the movie.

    • +1

It's tagged as books & magazines.

I can only speak for myself but I barely pay attention to tags. If I post a deal, I only use them to make sure the deal is in the correct section.

  • Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set $182

    Oh, they are comic books…

    That's a lot of pocket money…

    • You'd know, granddad.

      • +2

        Yes, I do know him…

    • +1

So you got all this money to blow on fancy hats but not a limited edition, genre defining manga? smh my head

      • I wouldn't even pay that much for Archie comics.

  • I love Akira but even the lowest price seems to be quite expensive for what essentially are just 6 issues of Manga?

    • +2

Hardcover copies though, and there's the Akira club book included as well. Works out at ~$25 / book which is pretty good.

    • +3

If you add the 6 paperback issues to your cart individually, it comes to 184.53aud (at least at the time I am posting this comment).

So I think 182aud for the hardback versions plus the art book in the anniversary bookset packaging is pretty good value. Of course, each to their own.

  • Wait that's the B&W edition. Any deals on the coloured one?

    • +1

Unfortunately I don't think they produce those colour copies anymore according to a video I watched online… Am I allowed to post YouTube links here? The title was "Otomo's Akira Anniversary 35th Hardcover Review and History" and the guy goes through the different editions that were released up until this 35th Anniversary Box Set.

Apparently those colour versions are super hard to get now, probably only possible through the second hand market but I'm just guessing..

  • Thanks for posting OP! Purchased the set. I absolutely love the original animated movie, so I'm super excited to be able to finally experience it in its original manga form.

    • +1

      Have you read them before?

I did about a decade ago, and from memory the movie covers most of the first and last book and skips a majority of the middle, brushing into a couple characters. It's a good read.

      • +1

I never have, and I've heard the same thing so that's why I'm so keen on reading these manga.

  • Hate to be THAT guy, but to this day, I think this has got to be the most over-hyped and overrated story (by Westerners) to ever come out of Japan.

    I'll see myself out.

    • I held back on saying this.. Lol.. Super overrated and kinda boring actually with little to no plot.

    • -4

Actually that'd be any Ghibli movie that isn't Howl's Moving Castle.

      • +1

That's hardly true, plenty of Ghibli films have great stories.

        • -1

The stories in them leave me cold. What they do have is gorgeous animation and Joe Hisaishi.

    • +2

I admire the spiciness of your take but hard disagree. Still beautiful to read/watch and have to keep him mind this was made in the 80s. Was pivotal in the evolution of the cyberpunk genre, especially from a Japanese lens.

That said I'm not clamoring to drop 200 bones on the manga lol, but would be a nice collector's piece.

    • I was impressed by the animation. Not the storyline.

Let's face it, the movie is basically Kaneda's pose on the bike and Tetsuo going absolutely nuts at the end.

  • OOS?

  • Saw the Camel3x notification earlier today but thought I can buy after work. I was so wrong.
