New DSLR Camera

Hi ozbargainers, this is my first post in ozbargain and eagerly waiting for a good response(as i had a good experience from the site in the past in finding bargains). I am looking for a good entry level DSLR camera. I am going on a tour overseas next month and looking forward to capture the good movements. I have been keen on the cannon 500d and the 600d cameras(both with twin lens). I am impressed with the 600d as i have used my friends camera before. he bought that on boxing day online for just $700 with twin lens. Looking forward for some positive and ripper deals. Thank you in advance.

if you are getting a camera just for tour, I would highly recommend the canon S100. it's not a DSLR, but it's lens and quality rivals most entry level DSLRs with their kit lens.

Most kit lens that you get with the entry level DSLRs are not that good… especially low light situations.

Canon S100 lens is 24-120mm (equivalent) lens range, F2.0-5.9.

To get the same effect (F2.0), you would need to invest 1000s more on better quality lenses… ;)

To add, if you are thinking about the 120mm and above distances, for a DSLR then you would need to invest on a tripod, a better zoom lens as well.

DSLR is a slippery slope I tells ya. lol.

  • Hi mate,

I would probably go for a Canon 550D instead of the 600D, if you look at the differences the 550D is a better quality (not by much), the only other difference is size, the 550D is smaller, and the tilt LCD screen which the 600D offers. If you are travelling size does counts.

It all comes down to choice, but check out the specs here.

You'll need to get a decent SD card. This site may help. Stick with Sandisk SDHC cards, because if you're gonna film movies you'll need a Class 10 card and you most importantly you want quality. No point in getting a crappy no name card, they're nothing but headaches. Just my two cents. http://www.ewareshop.com.au

If you find memory cards cheaper elsewhere let me know because I soon need to stock up on another 1 or 2.

  • WOW this is awesome I am loving it. great responses. "slowmo" u said that the canon S100 is better than the cannon 1100d is that in terms of both clarity and zoom?

    • they are different beasts… canon S100 is one of the top point and shoots out there.

1100d is an entry level that comes default with a not so good kit lens. (non-IS or usm)

the kit lens that 1100d has ( EF-S 18-55mm f3.5/5.6 III) which means that at 18mm, the Fstop is 3.5 but when you 'zoom' to 55mm, the Fstop increases up to F5.6 and that doesn't mean this is a gradual increase.
At the same time, a 18-55mm lens on a 1100d has an actual focal length of "28.8mm - 88mm" which is not as wide nor as far as an S100 lens.

Generally you will pay more for lower F number. So a F2.0 zoom lens (which only the pro L series lens will have) will cost you at least $3000.

on top of that, this lens is a 18-55mm III and not a "IS" lens, which generally means you will need more time for the autofocus to focus and you need a steady hand.

So in summary, if you compare in terms of 'off the shelf' quality and zoom , S100 wins by heaps.

If you want to take any decent photos, the kit lens has to go, and replaced with something much better, and this would mean spending more money.

With your initial requirement of touring in mind, the S100 fits in your pocket. That's another valuable plus.
