100% this is the route to go.

  • how big is your budget?
how many days are you on the snow? Skiing? Boarding?
what are the chances you will go back to the snow again? (that one will be hard to answer)
As said above, generally cannot go wrong with Aldi gear as a newbie.

It depends on what you are doing. It really doesn't get very cold in Australia at the snow compared with overseas - generally the coldest it gets is a few degrees below zero during the day.

If you are going skiing/boarding then you're going to be at the mercy of the weather gods as you're probably going to want to continue to be out there if it is snowing/raining/sleety/horribly windy to get value out of your lift pass. Best bet is to get something waterproof, the higher the rating the better. 5,000mm waterproofing is not going to keep you dry on a wet day, aim for at least 10,000. 20,000 is better if you're planning on going a lot and want something better long term. If you're snowboarding, you want highly waterproof pants as snowboarders spend half the day sitting on the ground. For skiing you can get away with less.

If you're just playing around and seeing the snow, be picky with your day as much as you can. In that case you barely need waterproof stuff, just warm.

For both scenarios, layers are your friend. A thermal underlayer, preferably something breathable like merino wool is ideal. Then a mid weight middle layer, like a medium weight jumper - again something like merino is going to be good here, but can be something else. Finally a jacket on top to keep you warm. If the day warms up, you can take off your middle or outer layer and have options for how you stay warm.

I have a Phenix ski jacket that I've used in Japan a number of times and usually in Australia, I just wear a t-shirt underneath and have the vents open to stay temperature controlled. It's only on odd occasions that I ever wear extra layers underneath here, it just doesn't get that cold. But I ski a lot, so the purchase made sense. If it's just a once off trip, you should consider renting as well as you'll likely get something better than buying anything cheap that sucks, or expensive that you don't use again.

  • icebreaker baselayers

  • I'd recommend hiring everything for your first time (just in case you dislike it).
From the hire gear you can determine going forward how much you actually need.

As Domingo said, it doesn't generally get that cold, especially on bluebird days.
Most people would just wear thermals underneath normal clothing and they are fine.

For Aus/NZ snowboarding I generally wear shorts under a pair of snow pants I got from Anaconda (Columba brand I think) and a t-shirt under the jacket I have. As long as they are waterproof, you are fine. Save money on the clothes and invest in good ski/snow boots if you are buying gear.

Also mittens are better than gloves. Nothing worse than trying to get your cold fingers into tiny holes.

  • Aldi for adults & Marketplace/GT for kids

Try second hand stuff on FB marketplace too!

  • decathlon.

  • Amazon

  • Moncler 😉

  • Aldi and compression layer underneath.

  • Start doing leg exercises so you don't die by lunch on the first day.

  • Used is the go.

or clearance sales get last seasons colours, which are usually the same with a different name to fool the trendys.

or just hire them if its your first time and may hate it.
