Pioneer Plasma. Is It Compatible with The Sonos Playbase?

Hi, As the title suggests. Im at my sisters and she got a leftover pioneer plasma KDLsomething out of her now ex-husband. Previously it had been using some accusound speakers with speaker wire connected directly to the back of the tv. the left and right speakers take up too much room and both seemed faulty (theyre very old now) and I had brought my now super-seeded sonos playbase (i bought an arc) with me to give to her.

After connecting it up via TOSLINK there is no sound? Ive checked the connections and plugs and the sonos worked fine at my house.

The only forum i found mentioning anything about pioneer plasmas and optical out connections for found suggest the hdmi ports dont kick through the sound? that cant be true can it?

Has anyone got any opinion on this?

    plasma

    Get a new TV :)

    • yeah, its not a bad suggestion. i dont know why u got 2 downvotes :( id certainly encourage her to get a new TV. AFAIK, plasma uses a ton more energy than the newer TVs. I just dont think it makes sense to hang onto this old tv when u get get some ok 4k tvs :( This Plasma she has is 50" 1080p.

        Same thoughts here.

Is she hanging on for sentimental value?… A hand me down from the ex-husband…

    Pioneer Plasma

Woah, I remember a friend in High School being the cool kid with that TV a good long while back now lol

  • It would appear not

Chase down a media player with optical output (Vodafone TV would be a good one), then just hdmi to tv and optical to the playbar

    • I've got a couple of Vodafone TV units and they don't have optical output. The only way I could get separate audio out of a Vodafone TV was to get an HDMI to audio splitter, which cost me $25 on Amazon.

      • Oh bugger yeah bad suggestion by me

        • the idea is ok, My sister has a NV Shield i bought her for christmas. But that doesnt have optical output :/ and then my niece and nephew were fortunate enough to get a ps5, but i dont know if that has optical output. But then then the sonos playbase is only optical input, not hdmi.

          Everythings conspiring against me.

And at the moment theyve got no sound. Surely the tv has inbuilt speakers though??

  • Great TV. Old, but old doesn't mean bad.

May be too old for ARC, so like spackbace said it might be better to use as a display only and have optical running from a media player to the playbar.

  • Google pioneer plasma KDL (okay use the model #) and RTFM to see how to enable the TOSLINK.

  • thanks people :) I think i got the model wrong. i dont know if its pdp or kdl or what it is. i didnt take any photos and ive completely forgotten.

  • I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that tried to help. My sister was strapped for cash for a while and had to make do. She's finally got on her feet after a divorce, the TV broke down, and she replaced it with a 65" Sony Bravia … X90J? I think. Its beautiful.

Again, thanks for the help all!
