Travel Router / Wi-Fi Extender Question

Hello OzBargain people, I'm looking for something to extend a public wifi network and bridge it as a private one.

I can almost connect to the network from my apartment with my macbook but it is just out of range / very spotty connection.
So I want something that will have a stronger signal than my macbook that I can have in the same spot (my apartment) that I can use to extend the signal (ie. not actually place it any closer to the signal).

Doing some research looks like I need a travel router / wifi extender.

Would something like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/619277 or this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/554018 work? or would I need something with a larger antenna?

Any recommendations?

    If you're extending it, you'll halve the speed

    Taking advantage of a maccas or something to stream your Netflix? Personally I wouldn't run the risk of doing all my internet over a free, open connection, but you do you boo

      Yeah I'm cheap and don't use internet that much, doesn't need to be fast.

        Again, you'll be leaving yourself wide open by using a public network. Not to mention they could easily ban your IP range if you're seen abusing it

    can you get a decent signal from anywhere in the apartment? i don't think the routers you linked to are going to magically improve the signal.

    Get something like the TL-WR941HP. It should meet your needs on extending the signal, but the product isn't small
