Help Me Decide between Two Bikes

Hi ozbargainers,

I don't really know anything about bicycles, so I need a bit of help deciding between two.

https://www.merida-bikes.com/en/bike/1945/bignine-20
and
https://shop.merida.com.au/products/MEBI21C316

They've both been offered by mates at the same price, my mates don't really know much about bikes either. I've currently got a sketchy bike i've never heard of (fusion kinetik 3300 if that means anything to anyone). I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm 178cm and the bignine20 is an M and the bignine60 is an L

Which one would be the better choice?

cheers,
appreciate it.

Just google each component and compare one by one and go for the one that averages the higher specs. Assuming the 20 and 21 refer to the model years, there's a good chance the 21 will be marginally higher spec. Just like cars, manufacturers like to offer gradual upgrades as incentives to buy.

  • Both are good.

For reference, just grabbed an unused big9 60 off marketplace for $600.

You're probably right between frame sizes too. Both will be fine imo.

    • Thanks Herpin, they're both offering them for 380, so feels like an alright deal.

  • They're both pretty entry level bikes to be honest, having said that you can't really go wrong with either seeing as your current bike is probably not the best.

best bet is to go secondhand imho at this price point.

    • Yeah, my budgets pretty small unfortunately, luckily they've both been offered to me at sub 400. my current one's alright cuz it's got a shimano acera thing going on, which I think is meant to be good after a bit of googling. but it's fkn heavy. cheers drakesy

  • Check out the bike fit page and do the calcs to see which frame is the right one for you as this will determine which bike is suited to your height:

    • oof i'm the lower end of L, but i think m would be fine tbh

both garbage, why these 2 only?
focus on components and make a choice from there, the bike brand doesn't matter as much as the components.

    • unfortunately my budgets pretty shoddy. choosing this brand because got two mates who've listed their stuff on gummy and don't mind offering em to me at a mates rate.
might upgrade in the future, but I only use it to travel like 12k to work (across a few paddocks tho)

  • They're pretty similar bikes, not much between them really.

Without knowing what price you're being offered, it would be worth your while seeing if your budget could stretch to Deore componentry. Personally, I reckon this is the sweet spot for a bike at the more recreational end, but with a bit more class in the engineering.

  • If they are different sizes you probably should hop on both and see which one fits best. My usual advice when thw spec and price are close is to pick the most comfortable - and if you can’t pick which is more comfortable, pick your favourite colour.

Additionally, when choosing a mountain bike it is often better to choose the smaller frame if intending to ride mountain bike trails. A larger frame can reduce your ability to move around on the bike a bit and typically makes the handling a little slower.
