I was thinking either:

besides the price difference, which is better?

I also agree Panasonic are the best and any Television repairer will tell you the same thing buy a Panasonic. The only criticism i have about the Pansonic Plasmas is the sound isn't that great in particular the bass control which is terrible. If you want clear good sound you will need to have a AV.
I worked in Electrical retail for over 20 years on the floor and the last decade as a buyer for a large electrical chain. I think i can answer your query by saying my 2 plasmas, hdd recorders, blu ray and home theatre are all the same brand…Panasonic. Samsung is a good brand for the money, but for a few extra bucks nothing compares to the quality of the Panasonic brand. While other companies put all their money into marketing like Apple and LG, companies like Pana and sony put the bulk of their money into research and development, and that's the simple reason why their tv's are better. I just bought a 50" Pana neo plasma full hd tv for $1799 for christmas. Yes, i could have got a cheaper tv with the same features, but there is truth in the term 'you get what you pay for', and for my money, i'd rather pay a bit more and know that i have a plasma that will deliver me trouble free viewing for years to come. If it was me, i would buy Panasonic, Sony, Sharp and Samsung products without a worry. That's just my opinion after spending two decades in the industry. Hope that helps.
We bought a panasonic viera top tv last year.i can vouch for the imAge quality - second to none, although that will depend on the model, how well its setup, and what generation it is, yoj can be assured panasonic is going to be good.
The menus are easy to access but the big disappointment for me was the networking, as a network admin, I found it very frustrating that thepanasonic wouldnt connect to the net either wired or wifi, and the panasonic support couldnt work out how to solve it either, albeit they didnt come Cross as having many technical skills.
So we have a tv with no working apps dreadful diagnostics and very average after sales support.
I have used Samsung smart tvs at a friends house and they are dead simple and pain free to network and use. The downside is the image auality is not quite the sam
e and their surround systems arent as aucoustically impressive as panasonics range.
If i was going to buy another tv soon, I wluld be looking closely at samsung or sony, which are arguably the best in terms of smarts and connectivity… but it all comes down to to needs from the tv, no longer just a screen.
i set up my panasonic blu ray and tv easily using wifi adaptors included, but after a few weeks invested in a POWERLINE adaptor and a splitter box so that my tv, BD and PS3 now all work at full speed off the one connection point. agree that the apps are a bit small in number, but over time i think it will take off.
IMO I will choose the LG/Sharp, for both are focus on the display inner technical's improvement not like Samsung pay more attention on the design, and this will make you feel that Samsung TV is fashion in design yet the picture quality is not equal with the LG/Sharp to get less enjoyment of the HD movie…
The price difference? They're the same price….or are you referring to other places where the Samsung is available much cheaper perhaps (ie TopBuy)?
I'm looking at this price range/feature set too and the following are my understandings from reading around (ie they are not necessarily true, nor are they necessarily gospel to me, merely what I have come to understand from other people's opinions and reviews):
Panasonic has the reputation as the better (or even the best) brand in Plasma TV. They recruited the majority of the Pioneer Plasma TV Engineers when Pioneer decided to exit the market. Pioneer TV's of a few years back are still considered to be some of the best TV's money can buy!
It looks like the Pana has Smart TV Apps which the Samsung does not.
Samsung have a reputation for unreliability. They make great products, but they can break down quickly.
However, the Samsung has an extra HDMI port, if you have more than 3 HDMI devices.
Overall, I'm tempted by the uber-cheap pricetag on the Samsung, but willing to pay a small premium for the higher Pana PQ and (hopefully) Build Quality/Reliability.
I'm hanging out to grab one on Clearance when the 2012 models arrive (expected about March I believe). The new models look pretty nice too, so if the price is right, I may well look at them!
