Will Adding a Standalone Router Help?

I get weekly(?) dropouts on my modem router. Once I restart the router it immediately restores conenctivity. Would adding a 2nd standalone router and using the original in bridge mode alleviate problems or would I need a new modem router? I've read its better to have a standalone modem and a standalone router but not sure if I need to replace what I have or just supplement.

Depends what's dropping out. WAN connection type? FTTN losing sync?

Is ONLY your wifi dropping out, and is it one device or all? Do wired ethernet devices have the same dropouts?

Need lots more info to troubleshoot

        I'm doing my part!

… Now it's up to the OP to actually do some fundamental troubleshooting before throwing out complicated concepts like bridge mode.

    • It's fttb at the moment. Appears to be all devices but haven't checked if ethernet devices also drop out.

But are all the devices still connected to the router? Just no internet when you try to access a web page? If so, like Twix said below check the NBN modem’s lights or check the router’s web network status page to see it has a internet connection.

        • Thanks will check next time this happens.

The devices show the network but says "connected but no internet"

The usual reasons cited for having using a stand-alone modem and router is that modem/router combos usually have very few features, and can't run the wonderful open-source firmwares that enable all kinds of trickery. In addition, the modem/router combos sold by ISPs are usually made to a very strict budget and are relatively poor quality.

Internet drop-outs are related to the modem part of your device, so I doubt off-loading the routing job will make much difference. That said, trying an alternative (high quality) modem can often yield surprising results, so it's worth a shot if you can borrow one.

    • Thanks. What are some suggestions on replacements? Does fttb need a modem or can a router plug right in? I've moved between fttn fttb and hfc so get confused

        FTTB needs a VDSL2 modem.

        FTTN & FTTB = VDSL2 modem/router combo or VDSL2 modem + router.
FTTC = NBN NCD + router.
FTTP & HFC = NBN NTD + router.

Is this on FTTB, FTTN, FTTC, FTTP, HFC?

What is the brand and model number of your modem?

    • Fttb and it's an archer vr600v

      • +1

VR600 is a suitable VDSL2 modem. Do the Ethernet tests. Is the modems DSL light turning off?

        • Thanks I will check for this next time it happens. What's the difference between the DSL and internet lights? I thought they were one in the same!

          • @polol: DSL means syncing to the node and Internet is for authentication. The next step is to test a different VDSL2 modem. Is your ISP iinet?

            • @Twix: With superloop at the moment.

              • @polol: For cheap get a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 off Gumtree. TP-Link Archer VR2100 or VR2800 if you want delivery or go instore.

Used to have the same modem, root cause was traced back to the modem after months of debugging with NBN. Eventually claimed warranty and returned the device. Now I have an archer c9 and it's great.

  • When I first port to superloop for my FTTP NBN, my Asus router keeps losing my allocated IP, resulting in dropouts. I need to change the WAN DHCP renewal to continuous mode. Unsure if this is applicable to you mate

  • I moved my office to the back of the house and could not get wifi, Found a netgear nighthawk for $50 on marketplace and set it up, Fixed my problem and fixed my tv dropping out every so often. Best investment ive ever made.

I have my nbn/modem/router in a cupboard in the garage. I probably couldve just moved it out but meh.

    • Never put a Wi-Fi router in a garage cupboard. It is even worse when made of metal = faraday cage and blocking Wi-Fi signals.
