I used the EPP 15% discount so wasn't quite that bad. Only $40 more.

Tempted to upgrade my 2707WFP, but not liking the 16:9 of this one :(
Should wait for another sale on the 30" :P
I dislike 16:9 as well. However I do have this screen and I do not feel the 'loss' from 16:10 as I have with other screens - the res is just so high that it doesn't effect me in any app I run I have plenty of room.
Of course the 30 would be nice but I don't think it will come down to anywhere near this price. Though already having a 27 you can wait it out I guess.
If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend waiting for the 30" to go on sale again. I got both of these.. and the 27 just doesn't get a look in anymore.
The two big advantages (for me) are the 16:10 and I find the dpi much more comfortable when look at apps at native res.
(I maybe feel ripped off by my 27, as I got it 3 months before the sale on 30, 1st month I had guests staying in my study so couldn't use it much, 2nd month I was in USA so couldn't use it.. one month of use.. then 30 replaced it :) )
The 30" is $999 in the Dell Outlet at the moment. This is the cheapest I've ever seen it, it is normally $1199 in the outlet and $1599 retail. There are 7 available at that price.

DFO-7DX8NAU NEW DELL U3011 30"W Ultrasharp HD Monitor 1 Year Midnight Grey None 7 $ 999
Can someone tell me why this monitor is worth 2/3 times as much as another branded 27"? Is this just another Aeron chair 'bargain' or is there some reason to buy this over an Asus/LG/Samsung? I've heard people say that it's good for photo editing or any graphic work, other than that couldn't you look at a TV for this price :/
It's much higher resolution than even a HD TV (HD TV is 1920x1080, this is 2560x1440).
Also it uses an IPS panel instead of a TN panel, making it a more expensive technology that provides better colour reproduction and viewing angle among other things.
This. Viewing angles and resolution are HUGE factors.
I have the Samsung S27A950 and I got it for ~500. I thought the Samsung display looked much nicer but the Dell one in this deal kills it. 1920x1080 at 27" is not great. It's not bad but everything is blocky. The Dell monitor offers a much higher resolution which is much better for bigger monitors.
But the thing that affects me the most about the S27A950 is the non-IPS panel; the viewing angles more importantly. Whenever I lie down on my bed and watch a movie, half the screen is dark and you cannot see anything unless you turn up the brightness to the point where the colours look washed out. You won't have that problem with the IPS display in the Dell monitor.
Thanks,
Super PLS looks pretty interesting, I hope they start making some monitors with that soon.
Wow, it doubles the viewing angle. That must mean 170 becomes 340, making the image visible from the rear of the monitor :D
But really, it's 2012. Where's my SED monitor and rocket car? :)
Downvoted again for asking a question.. Or maybe more Aeron chair users getting mad :)
I gave you a +
Dont think it was an unreasonable question, Even though most people here know the difference :P
Argh, hit the damn neg button on this comment whilst trying to navigate… How to remove?
@skeptik done
You didn't just ask a question though, your sarcastic tone came through even as text with the talking marks. If you just asked why it was better I doubt you'd have been downvoted, but you came across as a smart alec and got the down votes to boot.
PS. I didn't downvote you.
True but at what point does quality vs cost = a bargain?
I guess the majority speaks :|
"True but at what point does quality vs cost = a bargain?"
I didn't down vote you for asking a question, but when I see this comment you really sound very ignorant.
a bargain is when u get something u want, for cheaper than it usually is, its got nothing to do with if there is a cheaper substitute. U could get a 20 million odllar yacht for 15million and it would be a bargain
Cmon guys it happens all the time, heaps of bargains get posted on here & people recommend alternatives. The other week someone posted a xbox 360 controler and one guy said that you should just buy a xbox 360 console at the cost of a controler, when tablet deals are posted people always say better spend $x more and buy a xoom/ipad/galaxy etc.
It's like buying a computer for $2000 when you could spend $1000 & have practically the same thing, some people will say the OCZ ram, 7.1 sound card & watercooling are worth it..
tl;dr - maybe when I'm rich I'll think $990 for a chair is a bargain, until then I'll buy a new $50-$100 chair from officeworks every 2-5 years :)
Thanks to anyone who responded to my question seriously
@Redmo0n
Ok, so for people who care about colour accuracy, wide viewing angles and high resolution monitors (say, for example, someone working with media like a photographer or graphic designer) could you please enlighten us all what your cheaper alternative is?
I take it you don't care about these things, so cheaper monitors may well be an alternative to you.
@mooboy
If you read my original comment I had no idea why this monitor cost so much & simply asked what made it cost 2/3 times as much as same sized alternatives. Now that I've looked into IPS & seen the resolution I can see why it has a higher ticket price, it's cool tech and if Super PLS is released 15% cheaper then I could soon be an owner :)
I think Ozbargain is on it's period, everyone is super touchy & negs are flying
is there some reason to buy this over an Asus/LG/Samsung
the panel is an LG, just not the low-end crap that one would get at a low price.
AWESOME monitor. I bought one about a year or so ago & love it, seeing this deal I am tempted to get another as a 2nd monitor.
One thing to note for the gamers out there, is that you need a decent video card to play games at the higher res - can be somewhat demanding.
This is a great monitor - I've got two, and highly recommend them. Awesome price, even less than I paid a few months ago.
I have one of these and they are awesome. Not the best for gaming at its native resolution so I got one of the cheap full HD Soniq 42" LCD TVs from JB for $399 as a gaming monitor. I now have a dual monitor setup (one for work and one for play) and love it!
If you have the vid card to support the res I actually think its a great monitor for gaming!
It surely is.
Yes totally agree, I wasn't clear in what I wrote. Awesome for gaming if your computer can handle it, games look amazing. My PC was not fast enough for the native resolution.
Be a true ozbargainer and use Dell's chat function or phone up to knock price down to $629. I've purchased one on the Saturday at $629 delivered after askin the sales assistant nicely over Dell chat. Who processed my order with an ETA fri 20th.
You just joined today and you tell other members to be a "true ozbargainer"?
Not really a deal, you can jump on chat and get it for $629 anytime of the year. I got one of these just a week ago by using the online sales chat.
