How does being paid/not paid for lunch change the standard 9-5 business hours?

    • +1

I haven't had a literal 9-5 in years… It's usually 9-5:30, or some other configuration of an 8.5-9hr day. I think this is what OP is getting at

  • +12

I can have a lunch break for as long as I want, barring needing to go to meetings. Not paid.

  • +5

Not really? 9 to 5 = 40 hours/week. Most workplaces are 38 hours. So unpaid 30 minute breaks (pretty normal) means you're "losing" half an hour a week. So just make it 9 to 5.06 instead.

I eat on the job to my employer's benefit.

(Truth be told, I just can't be arsed sitting in the lunch area…)

    • +1

you keyboard full of food scraps isnt benefiting.

      • +9

it's the companies keyboard so it's okay.

      • +6

it becomes snacks for afternoon tea.

  • +8

If you're salaried, it doesn't really matter. You can not take the hour lunch or eat whilst working but you won't be able to leave an hour earlier or start an hour later.

According to my contract, I do a 35 hour week. In reality, there are weeks where I average 50-60 hours (or even more) and then there are weeks I average 15-20 hours of work.

The lunch break "hour" really counts for nothing. If there's work, I've got to get it done. If I don't have much to do and everything's under control, then I do whatever I want or I just disappear to the pub or my colleagues pop over to have a drinks and whatever at my home.

Paid 3x30 minutes breaks at a minimum

  • +6

I get paid more for toilet breaks than for lunch

Where are people working that they have unpaid lunch breaks so commonly, especially on this forum?

Even when I was a casual at Coles/Woolworths as a student I was being paid for my lunch breaks.

    • +6

Most full time jobs that pay a salary don't include paid lunch breaks. Actually, I think more often than not, those paid by the hour generally don't include lunch breaks too.

    • +8

Since when? All my casual work when I was younger was an unpaid lunch break when working 6hrs+ (or was it over 5hrs? same same)

      I think you're looking through rose-tinted glasses there…

    • +5

i doubt any casual coles/woolies job paid your lunch breaks.

    • +4

When was that? It certainly is not the case now, liquor have zero breaks for 6 hour shifts; regular shift for many coles workers is 3hrs and 45mins to avoid giving them a tea break

    • +3

Public servant/healthcare worker for nearly 20 years, casual retail worker before that, I’ve always had unpaid yet mandatory lunch breaks.

    • +6

Coles only pay the 15min breaks. The half hour breaks at 6h, and the 1h breaks at 8h are all unpaid.

  • +16

Unpaid lunch breaks have been the norm in office environments (even though I've mostly worked for manufacturing, I've been IT) my entire career of 30 years. You do an 8 hour day but you get paid for 7.6 hours (making your 38 hour week). The other 0.4 is your lunch. Of course it depends on the employer/manager. The last 20 years I've just done what I wanted and no one cared as long as the work was done on time. That meant some days I'd take a 10min lunch or eat at my desk and other days I'd take a 2+ hour lunch.

    9-5? Ohh part-time work

      long day in public service

      • It is a long day in the public service. I loved being on a 35 hour week.

    • +1

Lol @ cars sales salary positions… gotta love those 6 day weeks as well…

  • +2

Mandatory paid short breaks is what bosses usually try to cheat you out of. Don't give it to them though, if you showed up 15 minutes late to every shift they would chew you out, but they expect you to give up your paid 15 minute break to be a team player. Take all your entitled breaks and perks for sure.

  • i think unpaid lunch breaks is mainly for hourly paid workers?

  • Paid lunch break, boo yah! I get paid because the down side is I might not get lunch, so if I am having lunch and they need me, lunch is over. I may lose my lunch break about 1 or 2 days in total a week.

  • +2

Pretty sure unpaid is the industry norm.
    I do a 40 hour work week
8:30am to 5:00pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break as per the industrial agreement in gov.

I thought it was standard practice?

9 to 5 is a living hell. Despite being self employed, working harder and earning less, I still prefer this over a 9 to 5.

  • I have always been able to squeeze in at least an hour lunch break with no troubles in office jobs. My roles have always been salaried so lunch breaks don’t impact my pay.

  • not dead, it's part of technique to prop up the hourly rate while not proping it up!
aka, tell me u got a payrise by not getting a payrise

Is The 9 to 5 Dead?

Don't know about "dead", but depends on your role and industry.

But, flexible office work hours appears to be a new "normal" these days.

Unpaid lunch breaks were always the norm, what has crept upon us is the required working through, unpaid, the lunch break we all once took as a right because of extra work or stripped down staffing or to meet imposed employer targets.

  • Salaried.

  • Some (not that helpful) information for those seeking "official" advice:

Fair Work - Maximum weekly hours

I can't remember ever getting paid lunch breaks. (Smoko yes, but never lunch).

I have no job at all at the moment, so would be glad of any job, with or without penalties, paid lunches, etc.

  • I hadn't thought of this much before. I'm currently in a job with a 1 hour paid lunch break (hours 9-5), while my previous 3 jobs were the half hour unpaid lunch break (8:30-5), so from my experience seems like it's not common.

    • +1

I reckon you've got the dream job. I thought 9-5 was just a myth, and I've never seen it ni over 30 years in the workforce.
Make it a 9 day fortnight and it'd be perfect.

      • I consider myself very lucky to have landed this role! Also working 1 day a week from home.

  • Depends on how many hours I work, I work full-time so most days are 1 hour unpaid lunch, I believe you get half an hour after 6 hours? Or you can choose to take half an hour instead of an hour, but I can never finish my lunch in half an hour (I eat alot).

  • As a teacher, I might get a 15 minute lunch break if on yard duty (ideally buffeted by a free period to enable a real lunch break during class time). If not on yard duty, it's 45 minutes, but there are expectations that you might meet with students or other teachers or do preparation duties required for the next classes, so it's certainly not free of duties.

Technically we're given a paid lunch break of 30 minutes, free of duties. In practice, this is not really the case for many, particularly newer teachers trying to keep up.

I've been working for 45 years and a paid lunch break has never been in any of my awards, EBAs or work contracts. That includes retail, federal and state government, airlines, small industrial businesses.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks their lunch break should be paid. It's your time.

  • No… you are entitled to 15min breaks… and 1h for lunch
