Great deal if you like dirt flavoured water.

    Horrible stuff!
I thought Cruiser had destroyed all evidence of the "LadyLuck" range!

WHat the hell is a Yumberry?

  • +3

    The snozberries taste like snozberries
    The yumberries taste like yumberries…

nothing like making up a fruit, because I'm sure calling it 'Artificial Flavour <number>' wouldn't cut it ;)

Actually, yumberry is not made up. It is a Chinese fruit called Myrica Rubra, and very high in antioxidants, one of the so called super fruits. It's called Yumberry here as a more "westernised" name.

Secondly, not every flavour is Artificial. By current Australian law, you have 3 status types - Natural, Nature Identical and Imitation. And flavours don't have E numbers. They're not additives. As someone who worked in the flavour industry for many years (and also on the Cruiser range), it's this misconception that to this day still irks me.

      • Explain how Natural Identical and Imitation are different to Artificial?!? Sounds like clever of a thesaurus to me.

Say what you will… if I'm drinking something that tastes something like an orange, but doesn't actually contain parts of an actual orange, grown on an actual orange tree, I'd say I'm within my rights to call that artificial orange flavour!

Nature Identical means the components used within the flavour exist in nature, but are synthesised in a laboratory. The actual chemical structure of the components is indeed blueprinted my mother nature, but made by man.

Natural means just that, every component of the flavour is derived directly from a natural source. Don't let this mislead you, it doesn't mean your watermelon flavour contains watermelons. It means it contains flavouring chemicals that are all derived from natural sources therefore, natural.

Imitation means the chemical structure of the components does not exist in nature. It has been altered to provide a different chemical.

Honestly though, the number of imitation flavours in the market are few and far between. That's where Australian regulations are very backwards. A company can claim "NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS!" and have Nature Identical flavouring in their product. Most people would see that and think all natural. Wrong, wrong wrong. Very misleading.

A basic example is Vanillin (a core flavouring component). The chemical structure is C8H8O3. A lot of Nature Identical Vanillin is these days synthesised from a chemical called Guaiacol. Natural Vanillin is directly from natural sources (though can still be synthesised from natural chemicals) and there is an imitation version called Ethyl Vanillin ((C2H5O)(HO)C6H3CHO). Ethyl Vanillin has never been discovered in nature. No natural version exists.

          So, you have -

          (NI) Vanillin (synthesised from chemical)
(Nat) Vanillin (from natural sources, vanilla bean or natural chemicals)
(Imit) Ethyl Vanillin Does not exist anywhere in nature, at all. Purely "made up".

Food flavours have to be the most misunderstood part of food ingredients. I have since moved on to a different field of science (and totally away from food science, thank god) but still enjoy what I once did :)

EDIT - And for the record, imitation and artificial are different names for the same thing.

        • Good response. I agree - in my opinion "no artificial flavouring" means that it came from nature, not a test tube (if you'll excuse me simplifying your expertise).

Thanks for a clear and detailed information!

The real bargain was the information IHFC shared.

      • Today I learned…
