Herman Miller Aeron Chair $990 on Special at Living Edge until Stock Last or End of Jan

1120

No introduction need for this chair. It is retail at $1450 in Australia but I believe this is way over price. At $990 it is reasonable and as such I have bought one.

      • ha..my last office works chair lasted 3 weeks

      • The last chair I have bought from Officework was 10 years ago at $700 and still going strong. However, it is nothing like the Aeron.

      • 12 years.

  • +4

I have just realized a lot of people here don't need bargains. Judging from some of the tones, it sounds like pocket change to some of you.

    • +16

Here's a tip…the rich don't stay rich by throwing away their money.

      • +2

You are right but I am very conscious about my money. I don't throw them away and if there is a cheaper alternative that is similar to Aeron, I will purchase that instead. However, some chair comes close but so is the asking price.

      • no they tend to invent fiat banking and not print paper instead

  • Does anyone know if Living edge's showroom in melbourne is open tomorrow (Sunday)?

    • I don't think so. Only Monday to Saturday.

      • hmm damn, anyone know where i can try one of these out on a sunday?

  • is it that you need to go to Surry Hills (syd) to buy one of these?
i can't see the price on the website.

    • +1

Phone them up first to make sure they have them in stock and it come in size A, B, and C. Size B is what most people would be comfortable with.

  • If I had the money I would buy it… Please somebody find this deal again around Christmas 2012!

    • unfortunately the sale is usually coincide with what happened to USA rather than any special day in Australia. I have been told that USA stock taking around April and I believe there will be another sale around that time.

I am sitting on one now… all i can say is worth the money

  • Whats the function of the small rectangular weight beneath the chair? Looks like a commode.

    • the reclining mechanism is in there.

  • +1

Excuse my ignorance. How is the listed chair different to the one in this eBay listing, and is that worth an addition $400?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140679558465?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.…

    • Only way to know is to sit in it and try it. Once you are going to pay over a few hundred for a chair, the price becomes irrelevant and the comfort, stability and warranty of the chair is all that matters. I tried lots before I settled on my Aeron. You can't sit on a chair on ebay (or the web generally), no matter how good its write-up.

    • -1

That chair looks very complicated and my experience tells me the more complicated it is the more gimmicky it will be.

      • +1

From a personal perspective, I want to be able to adjust my chair in a number of different ways. Back height, back tilt, seat height and tilt, are all important to a comfortable posture. I'm tall, which means I have long legs and back, so when I look for a seat I look for a lot of back support and a long base.

Yes, it sounds like a lot of complexity. But the human body isn't designed to sit for hours at a time, so chair manufacturers need to design ways of accommodating it comfortably. Having a lot of dials and moving parts means your chair can be adjusted to better accommodate your body.

        • I think the OP's point is that when you have so many switches and dials, it adds extra places where it can malfunction, eg, an ergo chair normally fails because of the bearing cant handle the stress anymore, if you have 5-6 points where it can flex then its 5-6 times more likely to break.

        • True… that's why chairs with 12-year warranties cost more. They're built better. :)

  • +2

    I also found it here:
    http://www.sitbackandrelax.com.au/aeron-chair.html

They have lowest price guarantee, and 365 money back guarantee, so assuming the lowest price guarantee means they'll price match it could be a better option.

  • A good chair but try a variety of different chairs before committing to one. Personally I prefer the Steelcase Leap but the Aeron is a classic.

    • Totally agree that you should try a variety of different chair before making up your mind. I tried both the Steelcase Leap and Aeron earlier this year (sat on both for an hour an a half in their shops), and I personally found the Aeron having an edge over the Leap, in that after sitting on the Leap, I began to notice that I have been sitting on something for a while, whereas I didn't get that feeling with the Aeron, so I ended up buying the Aeron, also when it was on sale for $990, and I'm happy with that. But that might not be the case for everyone, so try before you buy is the way to go.

  • Absolute bargain, compared to a $50 Officeworks chair this is much better.

  • +4

I went from cheap officeworks chairs and was sick Of them breaking, I'm a bigger person, also 6'7" too. I ended up buying a KAB seating branded chair. It was round $1800rrp and got it for $900 or so. Best money I spent on something I use all the time. And it has air pockets with pumps. Awesome. If I was in the market for another chair, this one on ozb would be awesome.

It's funny how people go off at the costs of things, beds is a good example… For something you spend a third of your day in, it's worth spending $2k+ on a mattress. Same deal with a chair. Buy something to last and be comfortable

  • +3

Didn't know this chair is so expensive.
    It is very comfortable though.

  • +6

I never knew these chairs were so expensive. Every desk at work has one, and we have about 40 people.

  • +1

+1 for buying from Living Edge. My Aeron had broken part twice and they came to my place to replace the broken bit.

But if I have to buy another expensive chair, it would be the Steelcase Leap not the Aeron.

    • Was not aware of this brand. I will check it our and may get one for the misses.

  • +12

What is wrong with all the people raving on like lunatics about people spending $1k on a chair? Talking about them justifying it.

There are some people with serious problems here, telling everyone the spend limit on an office chair.

Not to mention their logic is terrible.

I spent $3k on my couch, I sit on it for far less time than I sit on my office chair, $3k is cheap for a leather couch.

People spend thousands on a mattress, and yet $1k is too much for a chair they probably spend a similar amount of time using.

Seriously calm down, it's a big saving on a premium product, if you think $200 buys you a good enough chair then good for you, if other people don't think that, good for them too.

  • I've had one at work and one at home for two years. Simply the best desk chair I've ever sat on. Originally I bought an "as good as an aeron" chair for $429 from the site linked below, and by all means it received a constant flow of ooohs and ahhhs in the office, but 12 months later the whole frame squeeked and flexed and loosened, and the seat padding flattened. IMO a 12 year warranty covered purchase is well worth it, only a buck fifty per week ;)

    http://www.mojodirect.com.au/products/Visionary-Deluxe-Ergon…

    • Hi,

Would just like to clarify a few points:

Who are you quoting? MOJO Direct has never claimed or even suggested the Visionary Deluxe is "as good as an aeron" a $1000+ Chair. They are 2 completely different chairs in 2 completely different price ranges. We have also never sold the chair at $429.

Did you contact us at all about the issue you experienced?
If your chair is 'squeaky' it may be due to the gas-lift, which can be replaced, certainly not the frame. The frame is also designed to flex and if there are any loose parts they should be re-tightened as per instruction manual.

      Thanks
      MOJODIRECT

  • Whilst this seems to be a great well-made chair, be sure it still fits your needs.

I have been ergonomically assessed through work and due to my leg length I need a chair with an adjustable seat depth. This chair doesn't appear to have that. Comfort is one thing, but ergonomics are also very important and differ per person.

    • Steelcase Leap has an adjustable seat depth, however is not on sale :(

80 pos+ vote for 1K chair on ozbargain? something quite fishy here..

    • +3

Not everyone on OzBargain is an idiot. Sometimes that shows through.

    • +1

Don't tell anyone, but all 96 of us are secretly reps for Living Edge ;)

      • Crap crap they're on to us, everyone abort.

        • Roger, aborting operation.

Waaait a second, you haven't plus voted. You're obviously a competitor trying to shut us down!

        • I'm a double double agent.

  • +2

I am sitting in an old Herman Miller chair as I'm typing, bought it second hand on Ebay for around $150. It's sturdy as a rock, I think it will last me many years to come. When I have some spare cash I will upgrade to an Aeron.

  • I have one and I love it. Paid this type of price from eBay US. Well, $550 ish + $300!!! shipping.

To me, it's worth it. I spend 40+ hours a week in it. Think of all those crappy $99-$199 Kmart/Target/IKEA/Officeworks chairs you buy over the years, break and chuck out.

    • +1

Yes, that is why I've believed the $990 is reasonable as once you claimed back the $90 GST the chair is equivalent to $900 with local warranty.

      • Absolutely. At the time the locals where ~$1400, I'm talking years ago now.

However I would still recommend people go down and try a few of these high end chairs. There are other brands that also unreal but don't have the pull (or premium) the HM brand does. They may be better value and different ppl will like different ones.

A downside of the chairs mesh is my back can get a bit cold in Winter, but overall, it's really damn awesome.

  • Great deal but makes me totally sad - I have wanted this chair for a few years now but don't want to pay $1500 for it - no living edge in Adelaide. Anyone know of anywhere that will do it for anywhere near this price in Adelaide?

Edit: Hang on http://www.livingedge.com.au/catalog/view.php?do=view&itemid… - has this closed down? not on their locations page.

    • I'd call them up. They can probably organise shipping for you. I wouldn't recommend buying a chair like this unsighted, but you've eyed it for a number of years so I doubt that's an issue.

Might be worth a shot. May add a bit back to the cost though, who knows. You may even be able to put it on the back of another shipment if any offices have made orders down there.

  • Anyone know if I can claim it as work related expenses when I applied for Tax return if I buy this chair and use it in my work place(replacing the crapy one provided by my company)?

    • I believe you can and when your accountant asked you why do you need an expensive chair for the job you should reply to save your back and neck. As for me I will also claim the $90 GST back completely.

      • How do you claim the $90 GST?

        • In my situation, I has a business and I am registered for GST.

      • 2nd that. Thank god for GST claim backs.

  • Can anyone confirm if the $990 is just a basic or fully loaded chair?

    Thinking of getting one!

    • +1

It has lumbar support and adjustment, adjustable arm rest vertically and horizontally, tilt lock and tilt sensitivity adjustment, forward tilt in helping to get off the chair. Also the obvious up and down level adjustment. This is what included but not sure what fully loaded would includes.

      • "fully loaded" would probably include the chrome base and all the other useless crap that adds to the price. This is the "standard" edition.

  • +3

Woot, just got two - one for me & one for the Mrs. Expensive? Yes. Bargain? Yes.

  • I just picked one up from Living Edge in Brisbane for $990 inc GST. It looks like they have 30+ remaining. Worth a visit to try one out and experience the difference. My spine surgeon has one of these in each of his consultant rooms. That was enough to persuade me!

  • When you pick up, does it come in a box or some kind of packaging, or is it pre-assembled?

    • It's already assembled except plastic cover around the castors and user manual attached to one of the lever.

  • -1

    Opportunity cost dudes….
yeah, sure it's a 'great chair' blah blah.
if it costs 1000, then it costs you $70 a year just to keep it! (if you put the money in the bank)
I can buy a 'crap' officeworks chair every year for the rest of my life for that price.
    not a true bargain…

    • +6

It really depends if people are stupid enough to think that sitting on a horrible chair for a third of their life in order to save a few dollars is a smart decision. If they do, I guess there's not much hope for them anyway.

    • +1

Please do share which bank is paying 7% interest. Now that would be a good bargain!

    • +1

It is not that simple. You will need to factor in tax return and retained value which I doubt your $70 chair will be much. It will probably costs me $300 over 10 years:

$900 - after claiming gst back
      $600 - after claiming $300 from tax.
$300 - after sold it for $300 after 10 years.

$300 for 10 years is not bad for me.

      • Again what I am doing.
I thought everyone on ozbargain would be onto all work related costs.
Savings get bigger when you get a car.

  • -3

$1k for a chair ? Planning to become a couch potatoe? I work 12 hours a day in an office and my $80 officeworks torn leather chair does the trick.

I voted positive because it's a bargain but you honestly have to have shit for brains or a lot of disposable income to pay this much.

    • +4

You bought a Sony 40" LED TV in 2010. Why? A Conia does the trick. Do you have shit for brains or too much disposable income? After all, all TVs are the same aren't they?

      :)

      • +1

Yea okay mate, I didn't have to dig up someone's comment history to make a valid point.

The fact of the matter is most TV's will require a minimum of a couple hundred dollars - especially considering that was a 40" let alone a Sony 3D TV within a few month of release- it was certainly a bargain.

If you want to go and spend $1000 on a chair that will almost certainly never maintain the same resale value or perceptive worth from consumer to consumer, then by all means go ahead.

It's funny how one slightly negative comment on this site is always voted down and when a little defender comes along, the opposite happens.

You certainly did miss my last point : I voted positive as it was still a considerable bargain. I merely justified my vote below…

        • If you weren't so arrogant in your post, I don't think any of us would have bothered.

        • +1

Yea okay mate, I didn't have to dig up someone's comment history to make a valid point.

Well, yes unfortunately it seems he kinda had to…but even that doesn't seem to have helped you get the one salient point in the whole debate. You almost had it here:

never maintain the same resale value or perceptive worth from consumer to consumer

The simple fact of the matter is that everyone has their own unique priorities! That is all. :)

    • +5

Spend some money on glasses.. You missed the Positive button.

    • But on the other hand, $999 (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/61754) for a monitor is acceptable for most people, when I can get one for $79 (http://www.i-store.com.au/product/?CategoryID=7&SubCategoryI…).

I find it amazing that the comments on the monitor are "do you think it's too big", but on the chair are "are you stupid"?

It's the same amount of money, but the chair will (almost certainly) last longer than the monitor it is placed in front of, and get used for the same amount of time. Which one is the bargain?

  • +4

The same people buy a 2nd hand bed for $100 and then wonder why they have back problems/sleep poorly…

  • Yeh some people spend 100k on a 2 seat Porsche, when you can get a 5 seat geely for 15k!

  • +2

a good case for this chair being good value. http://lifehacker.com/5857142/the-comfort-principle-spend-mo…

    • This a good argument, if you had the money I can now see why the chair would be good but I'd still be shopping around to see if you can find something at the midway point.

  • I asked them to contact me about delivery to Adelaide. No response yet…

    • Try Innerspace in Adelaide - just bought one today - they are matching the living edge price.

  • +1

I bought one a couple of hours ago - had a quick trial and bought it. It's very solid and comfortable.

If you're trying to justify whether you can afford it, apart from the health and durability reasons, it comes pre-assembled, which could save half an hour of my time putting it together, which is worth a lot. And for those who can claim a tax deduction, the net cost is really small compared to the benefits.

Finally, note that Living Edge is Herman Miller (Aust) Pty Ltd.

  • -2

Can I ask at what point would this not be a bargain?

If this chair had a RRP of $10,000 & was being sold for $4,990 then is it still a bargain? If the chair was say RRP $500 & was being sold for $249 then I would +ve, but do others simply see the discount as a bargain or the chair being worth $990? How many people here actually bought the chair?

    • Reading the thread will provide the answers.

    • Why does it matter how many here bought it? Your question comes back to the old 'what defines a bargain' question but this is a case of an item that is seldom discounted, assuming you were looking for something like this in the first place.

    • It's normal sale price is $1200-1400, therefore $990 was a bargain. I sat in a brand new one at their showroom and ended up leaving with that exact chair. Loving it!

  • Are people buying from the store and picking up?
Otherwise how much is delivery to Sydney?

    • People are buying in store.

Call you local branch in Surry Hills to ask if they deliver: 9640 5600

      • Yeh they can arrange delivery, $250 to deliver 2 to me in Coffs Harbour.

  • i just wanna know will it fit in a sedan with the back seats folded down or will it rquire a hatchback..

    • It probably depends on your car. I fit it into my medium-sized sedan's back seat - I just shoved it all the way in sideways. Use a tarp or blanket to protect your upholstery.

The second one I picked up actually fit into a coupe's front seat, believe it or not!

      (both are size B)

  • +2

I went in and tried one of these the other day and TBH I came away a little disappointed and won't be buying one. Not that it wasn't comfortable, but just not a big enough improvement over my current cheapo chair. Certainly not a $1,000 improvement anyway. Maybe I was expecting too much from the chair, but that's my opinion anyway.

    • and you are entitled to it - it appears an honest appraisal following your investigation of this bargain.

  • Does the $990 include GST? If so can someone please link to their invoice it would really help me out as Innerspace in Adelaide have matched the price but only ex gst ie $1089 and they said if I can verify it's $990 inc they will match that.

Thanks to OP for alerting me to this and Innerspace for matching it even though there's no living edge in adelaide :D

    • —deleted—

    • Cancel this, I phoned up a living edge store and got a quote emailed - the Innerspace in Adelaide should now know that the living edge deal is GST inc

    • Just letting everyone know that innerspace in Adelaide are NOT matching living edges price even though they promised me they would do so. They are not budging on 1089 inc gst. 1089 is still a great price so I have gone ahead anyway dispite the bad customer service.

  • My office has aeron chairs in the meeting rooms and they are very comfortable in my opinion. I am buying one in Sydney, and you can pick them up from their warehouse in Alexandria.

  • Having tried the chair, I can confirm there are significant problems with the chair, well documented all over the internet when you look for it. Be careful if you decide to buy it, as it is a lot of money for a chair.
