Reaching Credit Card Promo Min Spends

Does anyone have any tips on how to reach the minimum spend requirements when signing up for credit cards just for their sign up promotions?

I move my regular bills across to my next credit card but it is still very difficult to reach the minimum spends. I don't want to get into just spending money on things I'd otherwise not buy just to reach the goal.

Gift cards, discounted supermarket gift cards.

Many credit cards classify gift cards as cash advances, which are excluded from spend

Not when you buy them from actual brick and mortar stores

Really? Coles gift cards from coles store?

      • -3

Really? I know some GC can't be paid with credit card but not that many.

I know prepaid EFTPOS cards can't paid with credit card.

@dasher86: I see what I called prepaid EFTPOS card is what people call GC.

I only refer GC as store GC.

            Meh.

        Source?

I'm 99% sure that's incorrect. If that was the case, why don't you pay cash advance fees for them?

The millions of people who've bought a gift card as an easy gift probably would've been pretty annoyed if it were true.

But it isn't. So they aren't.

That’s cool. You seem pretty hostile for a wrong answer on a bargain forum.

      • Complete rubbish. Name one card which does this or provide the terms.

Here is a thread of multiple people replying that they were charged a cash advance fee.

If you want me to name a card, sure. ANZ frequent flyer black and Amex platinum charge. These are the cards I have. If you want me to quote terms, sure. From the ANZ website that details what cash advances may be: “ Buying or loading value on gift cards or prepaid cards”

          • @Tech5: Again this is where we are talking about different types of GC.

Prepaid EFTPOS cards are GC, where you gift them to some people. These cards, as far as I know, required cash equivalent payment. I said you can't pay with credit card (and meant without cash advance) earlier. Regardless, cash payment likely = illegible transactions for min spend.

There are also store specific like Woolies/Ikea GC. I get amex points buying those online and not charged cash advance fees. Do those count as cash advance under Anz program and more specifically to OP Qn - quality for min spend? That's a more helpful Qn to answer. The 2014 thread seems dated and the T&C is unclear to me. A more recent anecdote would be useful.

          • @Tech5: Bought tons of gift cards from multiple different gift card portals/online stores/physical stores with my three previous ANZ credit cards and AMEX (ANZ frequent Black, Travel adventure, Rewards black, Amex explorer, platinum edge, platinum. Never ever got a cash advance fee.

Screenshot please if you can prove it :P

    horde toilet paper

  • How much are you looking at? Usually they're $3k in 90 days?

If you time it right, annual bills such as:

    Insurance
    Rego

If you're a home owner, rates
If you're renting, ask if you can pay in advance via CC.

Otherwise, pay for family/friends purchases and receive cash/IOU's?

    • This. If there are friends/family you trust, paying for their bills or big ticket items are an easy way to reach the goal.

Pay your tax in advance, and gift cards at supermarket, easy!

You can pay bills in advance. For example, you'd know what your electricity bill is. You can just pay off the next year of that bill if you need to, similar with internet, rates etc.

Just send the extra amount via the normal way you'd pay it off.

  • Council rates is best, mine local didn’t accept Amex but found going through Auspost Billpay I could use PayPal linked Amex

yes if you can pay by paypal is good but most other council cant. and the bank will know if you pay council from the name.
council is government. government bills are excluded just like paying ATO

I paid a year's worth of health insurance.

Most OPs avoiding to spend $ don’t have insurance… doubt that will change…

  • Buy Giftcards for people and get reimbursed. (That’s basically what my business page is about)
Pay expenses for family/friends and get reimbursed.
Prepay utility/council bills for family/friends and get reimbursed.
Pay business expenses and get reimbursed

Cant pay council, its government payment…

      • I’ve paid City of Sydney rates before on card without penalty. Your council may have surcharge.

        • Did you get any reward points? does it count towards min spend?

  • Yeah easiest is prepay your normal expenses and supermarket gift cards

  • If you can't spend 1k every 30 days then you need a partner and/or a kid/move out of parents home. Maybe even a pet with special needs would do!

  • I just do my normal spending and if I'm short on the min spend, I buy discounted wish egift cards. Never had an issue. Woolworths money app is great for tracking egift cards too.
