New 42" TV Recommendation

Hey guys,

I'm after a 42" T.V which I want to use as a monitor aswell. I don't play games, and would probably only use it to watch movies via my laptop and other general computer work.

Do you have any recommendation and if you think the below T.V by Kogan is any good..

Any thoughts ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

  • Not many people will recommend Kogan TVs.

Don't be scared by 720p screens.. 42" is "small". As a result, the pixel size on a 42" 720p TV is below the detectable limit from normal viewing distance and therefore the Premium you usually pay for 1080p is probably not worth it unless you have incredible visual acuity.. ie 40:20 vision or are sitting less than 3m from the screen.

This is doubly the case if you are watching compressed video from a laptop.

Having said that, you're planning to do "general computer work". If you're planning to use it as a computer monitor, you're going to NEED 1080p and I'd highly recommend sitting/standing in front of a 42" in store for 5 minutes from your planned working distance to determine whether your mind is too big for your eyes! I think 42" is too big to use as a monitor under normal computer use conditions and 1080p is too low a resolution for such a large screen at normal computer monitor distance.

    • +1

42" is not that small, 40-42" is a very common loungeroom size. And there is a big difference between 720p and 1080p, that is for sure.

    • I would really check if Full HD at 42" doesn't make a difference.

My gut feeling is that it does. People debate whether it makes a difference at 32", let alone 42".

  • I have 40" fhd sony and can definately tell the difference, it is very distinct. 1080p is beautiful.

  • I just came back from Big W and they have this 42'' Full HD LCD for $398. Don't know if it's any good, but it seems to be ticking all the boxes. Have not been following prices of TVs these days, but it sounds like a bargain for a full LCD TV this size that comes with a 3-year warranty. No PVR though.

  • frankly i can't imagine staring at a 42" monitor at an arm's distance
