Ridiculous Pricing by Retailers

Hey just wondering what your thoughts are on the retailers that like charging ridiculously high prices for item.

E.g.

Officeworks
For
https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/philips-hu…

This item worth $49 max at retail, but OW selling for whopping $134

I'm sure you have more examples like mobile phones or other things.

But what do people actually do when that retailer is also doing stuff like price matching or price beat ask them to beat normal price of item or what do you normally do.

Other than just going away from that website or store (for purpose of not buying item)

haha i think i read you saying that in another thread

    Price is first consideration.
Then convenience for actually getting the item, ongoing support for warranty, etc., versus the time you would need to spend to obtain price-match.

$134 is around the price of the 2m kit so could be a price error.

Use it as an excuse to get OW to price match someone selling at RRP and get a further 5% off ;-)

    • I had already bought these for like 10 bucks don't need any more but just wondering how people deal with ridiculous pricings

I'm not sure what you mean? I would imagine I'm like most people … if a retailer is selling an item for far more than others, I simply don't buy it from them. When this becomes consistent practice (as opposed to the odd item), that retailer just doesn't get a look in when I'm looking for items they sell.

Oh you mean like Harvey Norman, got it.

          • @Woodinski: That's one that springs to mind. And not only for pricing reasons.

I don't need to think too much. If the price is too high at one place, I simply go buy it somewhere else.

    Then don't buy them?

so i had a look, this product is out of stock in the nearest 10 officeworks locations. So theyre probably ordering specifically from the manufacturer/disributer who has set the price high for one off orders.

As for the top google results. HN is sold out. JB has heaps.

  • This is the MK2

It is not compatible with all the existing light strips. Maybe they trying to cash in on this

I called a nearby OW, keswick to be exact, ask him why this one was so expensive.

And his response was that this one has sound capabilities.
I mean it's kinda ridiculous what he said. This has no sound capability.

      • +1

Sound as is audio or sound as in reliable

Sync the lights with movies or with games to enhance your viewing experience.
Enjoy your favourite music and adjust the light to react to the different sounds.

Believe it or not there are still a lot of people out there who don't shop around and still pay full ticket price for everything they buy without questioning the huge mark-ups that stores like Hardly Normal call RRP.

A family member (I've disinherited them) refuses to haggle or ask for discounts on anything they buy, stores love them, it more than compensates for the discounts they give us savvy shoppers.

    • I find that very surprisingly honestly.

I see myself at my workplace some people paying quite a bit for some items. But trust me it's never above the RRP. Like this particular item I mentioned it's like 85 bucks above RRP.

And yeah to be honest there's no point of being loyal to one place, everyone have their own interests,(and interest may be that they are looking for convince, no delay or something else) that they fulfill.

Good thing is that you have disinherited that trait

      (I've disinherited them)

because they "refuse to haggle or ask for discounts"?

      that seems a bit harsh

  • Costs has increased. Shipping has increased. Low Supply vs High Demand.

  • good opportunity for price beat?

More like ridiculous thinking. Worth $49 doesn't mean much in retail market. You need to pay for the manufacture, transport and Officeworks overheads. Officeworks knows that they can sell it with a massive price margin. That's why they keep them in stock than $20 led strips that you could buy off aliexpress.
Only small segment of people price match, otherwise office works wouldn't be around. Price beat is just a assurance, people think their price is already low.

  • prolly just want to sell it to a office worker with corporate credit card

beat it if u find it cheaper elsewhere
