It looks like a 53mm pancake lens to me.

    • At first glance I thought it was a lens as well!

  • +3

I have one of these, got it with their dosing funnel and bottomless portafilter. Using it with my Breville Barista touch. These three matow items make a great combo, only downside is that it doesn’t fit in the automatic dosing spot, so need to sit it below the grinder on the drip tray and press a button to grind the coffee rather than push and insert the portafilter.

  • +2

I have this and would recommend if running the standard breville tamp. Much more consistency.

  • +1

I use one of these with my Bambino Plus, seems to work better for me than the supplied tamper.

  • +1

Paid $30 for the same one, it's worth it if you don't have anything else.

Strongly recommend a funnel as well so you don't lose your grounds.

    • Do you recommend a particular funnel?

      • +1

        https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B082SWN84Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_g…

I have this one, the distributor fits through the funnel so I… Distribute while the funnel is still on, remove funnel and tamp.

        • I have the breville smart grinder
Would the portafilter still fit in, with the funnel on?

          • @karseeeejaaaa: Very unlikely

          • @karseeeejaaaa: I have this exact setup. With the funnel on I don't use the portafilter holder - I just hold it under and press the start button manually. It works great and I benefit from all the extra exercise I get each day by hand-holding the portafilter for those 18 seconds instead of resting it in the holder.

            • @myKidsPwnedU: This is now out of stock, but I guess similar looking devices from Ali Express should do the trick?
Funnel + Distribution Tool = New Purchases :)

A funny comment I read on a YouTube video -
With all the tips and tricks for making a coffee, learning piano look much easier

Edit - Found this for a funnel -
              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0n-KFIrC60

      • A lot of individual serve yoghurt containers clip onto a 58mm portafilter, just cut the bottom off at the desired length

    • My grinder won’t take a funnel (Baratza Sette).
That said, it’s so fast and accurate it’s probably unnecessary! If I was still using my old Breville SG Pro then I’d get one

    • +1

I have this and a funnel. I use the original Breville plastic tamper to lightly shuffle the grounds in to the basket from the edges of funnel and then use this tamper to do the actual tamp.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Got one for my barista express.

    • Yes, been using one for about a year now. only issue is the tamper is just slightly too small so coffee grounds build up around the tamper.

      • It’s a tough one, the basket has a slight lip between the top depth and where you should be ramping. So you’ll always get some grinds between the tamper and the top set ring. Totally forgivable imho given the consistency it affords.

  • +3
  • +2

Yeah I use this on my Dual Boiler.
Grind with Sette 270, level with this, and tamp with the other side or sometimes standard tamper. Much more consistency in each cup now

    • Any other recommendations for dual boiler upgrade?

      • Depends on budget, I have ecm synchronika - great machine, can be plumbed in. probably considered one of best on the market but you have to pay for it. If budget is no issue and you want a statement piece in your home - perhaps look at a slayer https://www.coffeeparts.com.au/slayer-onegroup-slayer-one-gr…

        • +1

Thanks, was more looking at extras rather than upgrade. I wasn't very clear. but I am dreaming of a ecm in 5 years or so

      • If you drink your coffee with milk then I recommend an infrared thermometer, something like this

        https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B089NFZVXJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_g…

My wife likes her milk a few degrees hotter so this tool makes it much easier to get the milk temperature right.

On a side note, I find they're grossly inaccurate for body temperatures so I don't recommend using them for that.

  • Just ordered.
Note that the OPs link isn't to the prime shipped one so you need to change the seller to get expedited shipping. Same price.

    • Thanks - changed seller to get it shipped by 7th April. 20c cheaper as well.

  • +3

Thanks OP, prompted me to buy this one for my 58mm portafilter, already have a good tamper from this deal.

    • Do you still need to tamp if using one of these distributors?

      • Yes

        • Why? Why couldn't I just set the depth of the distributor?

          • @Jatacid: Still need to compress the coffee grinds down for an even flow and extraction.

          • @Jatacid: You don’t need a tamper with these. Weigh your dose each time, grind, distribute and tamp (with the tamper side of these). The known quantity of beans will let you set the tamper to the perfect basket depth. If you’ve got a Breville like a lot of folks do, you can use the little razor to set the perfect depth for your tamping. If you find you’re running incorrect pressures and you have the right bean weight, adjust your grind.

            • +1

@camel: This one doesn't have a tamper side

              • @42: It doesn’t? “ Matow 53mm Dual Head Coffee Distributor & Tamper”…. unless the link is wrong and/or description of the post.

          • +2

@Jatacid: tamping creates pressure. This just moves the grinds around (at the top) evenly.

  • +1

I was against one of these after looking at the extraction yield tests by Socratic Coffee and Sprometheus using the coffee distributor.

I changed my mind after using one. I get much less channeling based on what I'm seeing in my portafilter and my tamps are level. Nothing's worse than pulling a bad shot and having to clean up and do it again when you don't have time. Having one allows you to control one variable to increase consistency.

    • +2

Exactly, I'd say their test didn't show much as the barista already had a good natural distribution/levelling technique. Though for the average Joe technique would vary greatly, at least this keeps it consistent.

  • Thanks OP, ordered one to use with the Barista Express.

  • Hey guys, since we're all talking coffee, I was curious if anyone would like to share what kind of coffee beans they use. I have a Barista Express and recently tried the Vittoria Espresso Coffee beans from Woolies, and it just doesn't taste nice. Any suggestions will be appreciated :)

    • +1

Get your beans fresh - makes all the difference. Supermarket beans can be quite stale.

    • +4

Aldi ones are OK from what I can tell. Not the greatest, but they are like 10~15? dollars per kg or something and you can just grab them from Aldi.

      • +3

The Columbian beans they occasionally have are great.

    • +2

coffee is a bit like wine, lots of different flavours, you need to work out if you don’t like the vittoria level of roast (e.g. bitterness) or it’s the way you are making it e.g too weak or too strong.

i use the vittoria blue mountain, but i do pile it in as i fill a mug not a cup.

darker roasts give a stronger taste per gram, but can also lead to a bitter taste, lighter roasts give a cleaner flavour, but are also weaker so i dose heavier.

try coffees until you find one that fits your palate, i’ve had better coffee at home with supermarket beans than i get from many cafes who use fresh and get deliveries every few days.

    • +2

You need to try freshly roasted coffee.. Night and day difference between supermarket coffee and cafe roasted.

    • +1

Fresh is all that matters. Buy from a local cafe or try anyone of the various online roasters.

If you're in a rush, the Aldi beans are miles better than every other supermarket bean, but are still no comparison to fresh.

    • +1

I know some woolies in Sydney now sells campos coffee. You need to go when they re stock to get them freshly roasted as some stores will have them sitting there for weeks.

    • +1

Market Lane, and its not even close.

    • +1

Grab something from Tim over at Direct Coffee. He posts a deal every week.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/614439 was the latest deal to give you an idea of prices.

Can recommend Vader from Axil, it's very forgiving to brew and goes great with milk.

    • +2

Depends how skilled you are and what kind of grinder you have honestly. If you're pretty casual and don't have a grinder worth more than $200 you're probably fine getting cheaper beans. Aldi/Coles and different blends. You can also find some good deals online - just do a search with your adblock turned off and you'll start getting ads lol. If you do have a good grinder and you know how to dial in your drink, then I've been using coffeefusion for some pretty tasty coffees, and whenever there's a deal on ozbargain I grab some. I like unique floral coffees because every cup is an experience. But some like warm comforting coffee that tastes like a hug so a darker blend might be better.

    • +1

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and extra tips :)

    • +1

Ona Coffee, Campos Coffee, Clandestino Coffee are all good. Woolies beans are stale rubbish, even the Campos beans there are usually a month old.

  • Thanks OP, got one.

  • Delivery is 5.99

  • +1

    Nice post OP.

  • Wow $10 June last year…?

    • That one was possibly a pre-order. I don't know exactly how it works but I have noticed certain products are selling at substantially lower price with very long lead time, like months away.

My guess is that the seller is trying to negotiate with the manufacturer for a set number of units, so he lowered the price to attract online orders. If the number is met, he places the order and they get delivered. If not, he counts on buyers forgetting about it or couldn't be bothered to take further steps. Worst case he refunds the orders. Depends on how you look at it: take your chance to wait for a bargain or a time wasting exercise.

  • Cheaper ones out of stock, now $34

  • You could get away with just using a distribution tool. I stopped tamping and distributing only about a year ago and the extractions have been on point after WDT.

  • Can anyone recommend a cheaper one? Cheapest I could find is from AliExpress for $25

AU $13.89 30%OFF | 53mm Coffee Distributor Tamper Dual Head Coffee Leveler Adjustable Depth Espresso Hand Taper for 54mm Portafilter Kithchen Tool
    https://a.aliexpress.com/_mMpiMCT

  • Don't you have to re-calibrate the depth every time you change the beans or the grind setting? Unless you consistently get fresh beans of the same kind?

My thinking is that finer or coarser grinders of the same weight have different volumes, so they sit at different heights in the basket and results inconsistent tamps.

    • If you weigh your dose and you have a correctly set depth on the tamping side, you just need to adjust your grind based on beans. This way you’re dealing with two constants with the only variable being the beans :) if you’ve got a Breville with their little razor, it’s a perfect tool to get depth.

    • Yeah this is true, but not much of a problem for me as I use the same settings and beans for a while before changing.

In fact sometimes I get lazy and I don't even recalibrate. I just use the distributor side to level the top of the grounds as best I can and I find it's a good enough base to tamp based on feel. But when you get the calibration right you don't even have to think to get a consistent tamp.

If you switch a lot between beans, settings and basket sizes, it might be difficult to get the most out of the tool.

      • If I believe the internet, I need to make my coffee making experience a highly scientific 34 step process every morning. Other than having a half decent rancilio pair I do none of that and consistently make good espresso just by feel and instinct

        • Haha, I can echo that :D

I used to make coffee based on timed dosing and a 60ml shot glass. That was simple and quick.

Then I started weighing the beans and yield to see if the coffee is any better, can't tell any difference to be honest.

  • I know it has expired but the people who make the Decent espresso machine say not to use the distribution part.

The Decent is a nearly $7k (in Australia) computer controlled and monitored machine, that gives a lot of data on what is happening to the puck as you make coffee. I need one!

John Buckman, the founder says that if you have a good grinder, the most you should do is use very narrow needles (a puck rake) to level out the top of the grinds and then tamp with at least 5 pounds pressure and make sure it is level. Anything else you do to the grinds is likely to make it worse. Check out their YouTube videos.

This tamper will at least help you get it level…. but the distribution side??? Maybe not.

However, if you like the taste of what you are getting, ignore everything I wrote.

    • +1

Most people who make excelent espresso (the people you hear this from) are already killing it with their distribution tactics. This is for the average to Good user, not for the proffessional.

      • +1

Hey ive seen some of the best cafes use one because its quicker. They're pumping out coffee after coffee day in and out.

It gives the barista flexibility to be 'messy' in a way.

They were using the original ona coffee ones though.

        • As a complete non-professional, I just put the tamper over the ground coffee in the filter basket and bang the whole lot on a small plastic chopping board to 'distribute' it and remove any pockets - works an absolute treat and lightly tamps it at the same time.

  • Has anyone received an email saying they've received refund?

    • Yep. In retrospect it wasn't that great of a deal as it was $6 for shipping without prime, despite the inaccurate title.

    • Yeah I just got the cancellation today. Was due to arrive today.

      That sucks

  • Ah I needed one of these. Spewing I missed out! Are there any other good deals out there?

    • Back in stock now but it's $33.00.

  • +1

    Mine arrived today from eBay.
Wow… The sheer weight of this little thing makes it feel premium.
Couple that with precision machining and you know you got what you paid for.

Not 'cheap' but feeling it in your hand you know you got back every dollar you paid for it.

I've watched plenty of videos of people using one of these but nothing can compare to the satisfaction you get my spinning it around to distribute and then flipping it to tamper.

Does it make my coffee making better? Maybe not.
Do I feel better when making my coffee using this thing? Hell yeah!

  • Just noticed this one for $24.99 + $5.99 delivery (Free with Prime on orders over $39.00) Looks exactly the same is the Matow.
