Federal Government Considers ID Checks to Ban Anonymous Social Media Accounts

I wanted to start a discussion on topic considering that OzBargain itself could be seen as a form of "social media". What are your thoughts? Would you give up social media? Is it feasible to implement? What if OzBargain requires ID verification? Etc.

One of many articles that has covered this:

I would love to see who JV is.. 🤣

    • I saw a video of him on Reddit reacting to a positive vote on his comment.

      • If you want to watch this video, you need to replace (profanity) in the url with the most obvious profanity.

Have to try and round up the dissidents I suppose. Need to control the narrative.

    • Dan Andrews got a lot of mileage out of having anyone opposed to curfews and lockdown on Facebook arrested.

You don't get to be a dictator by letting the proles voice their opinions.

field day for facebook's big data collection program. not a problem for me - i don't use them

    • +1

Same.. Never saw the need for any of it

      I say bring it on!!!!!

      • +2

        unless forums count
then we're all on one right now

        • +1

Can't we have OB privilege as the Government has parliament privilege ???

          • @Wardy: funny how privileges like that always seem to only be for the actually-priviledged

    • +1

You use your phone, Google, Amazon, Twitter, etc, they all collect ridiculous amounts of data.

  • +13

Further proof the government has no idea when it comes to anything involving IT.

    • +2

But we will vote it in anyway.

      • +5

Do you really think it matters who you vote for? Do you really think it would be any different with any 'other' party in power?
        na neither do I.

        • +2

I know what you mean, but yes I think it matters on the margin. For example, I could have got FTTP already, so yes there is a difference.

          • @nfr:

I could have got FTTP already

you're assuming they could and would have delivered what they promised

            • +5

@bargain huntress: So what? Every election promise requires the same assumption. FTTP is not rocket science anyway. Made me laugh when I saw them laying new copper in 2020. I have no loyalty to political parties, I just choose the more sensible promises. It's just like I don't get attached to brands, I switch to whoever offers the best product.

China implemented this system years ago to crack down on free speech and political thinking. Anyone who goes online has their username linked to their real identity.

Do we really want to follow China down this road?

    • +2

Do we really have a choice?

    • +2

Once China takes over the running of Oz, then it won't matter will it.

Will be interesting to see what sort of role Scottie will have in the new regime. Head honcho is probably not on the list. Premier Xi would not put up with his nonsense like we do. Also, he couldn't strike fear into people like Carrie Lam does. Once she sorts out Honkers, her next gig might well be here, though she might need to divert to Taiwan first and get that ship in order.

Facebook asks for ID verification if you have an account with very limited friends and posts. It already detects behaviour that troll/anon/fake accounts would do ie. comments on posts but nothing else.

    • +1

They and Twitter aren't doing nearly enough to prevent scammers though. So many have set up fake accounts that look similar to a famous person's actual name, you report them and the report gets dismissed. Morons.

"I was hacked overnight!" Mr Pyne tweeted this morning, saying he had been asleep at 2:00am when the "like" occurred.

Health Minister Greg Hunt' was NOT hacked when his Twitter account 'liked' a hardcore porn tweet

Lets clean up parliament before we start anywhere else

    • +8

Lets clean up parliament before we start anywhere else

It would be empty if you did that.

    • do you really care if politicians look at porn?

      • +4

It has nothing to do with looking at porn
        hypocrites and their lies

It wasn't me looking at and liking gay porn said Christopher Pyne I was hacked

It wasn't me looking at and liking hardcore porn said Greg Hunt i was hacked

This is called lying with no accountability and a bunch of hypocrites as they have alternative social media accounts which they forgot to log into first.

Not to worry we will waste taxpayers money on police trying to find these hackers that don't exists.
We will force everyone to a 100 points identification system for a social media license but let politicians have a free reign on as many social media accounts.

How about actually making politicians accountable instead of making excuses for them?????????

Nahhh feed the sheeple more lies and disinformation while dodging the truth.its the liberal national party way

Wake up Australia stop making excuses for politicians and start to hold them to account for their actions.

        • +1

@pharkurnell: Eventually at the polling booth
but for now the rusted on voters who support this corrupt government
Give them the facts about the liberal nationals HUGE debt, corruption, lies, coverups, rorting, jobs and cash for mates, sex scandal after another, police investigation evasion after another, double standards, the mockery they have made of parliament question time, failing to answer questions, failing to release reports, failing to release freedom of information, failing to be accountable, failing immigration, failing quarantine, failing the vaccine rollout, sports rorts, watergate, grassgate, billions upon billions on stopping the boats, deaths from an illegal robodebt, rolexes, chinese donations, 3 years jail for a family with two children, minors being locked up in detention with adults, putting afp at risk when leaked raids and on and on and on it could go for

            • +1

              @Loot N Plunder:

              Eventually at the polling booth

As I mentioned above - that doesnt work.. they are all the same parasites. Party A B C D - all the same.
They all do the same shit year in year out … they dont care once they get their pension

              • +1

They all do the same shit year in year out

I call bull shit to that are you a rusted on?

There is no way in Australia's history we have ever been this corrupt have ever been this unaccountable ever had so many police investigations into parliamentarians ever had so many rorts or misuse of money ever had so much debt or jobs for the team.

We have never used "I wish the member no longer be heard" until morisson and his crime gang started using it
Never had so many announcements about funding that hasn't been spent
Gifted millions to the rich (pratt murdoch hillsong) while taking from the poor (robodebt)
Cut funding to age care, education, tafe
Let so many illegal foreigners in
                purchased record amounts of weapons
sold more of Australia to foreigners (ports airports farms mines water food supply chains housing) where is our 100million dollars of oil?
                lost manufacturing

For the past seven years what do we have to show for tripling the debt? nothing

When was the last time we were told so many lies?

                • +2

                  @Loot N Plunder:

I call bull shit to that are you a rusted on?

Me Rusted on?? LMAO… I dont vote for any of them. Havent since the early 80s…

I've learnt that none of them are worth a teaspoon of spit… Every few weeks theres a story in the news of some form of corruption that quietly gets swept under the carpet - all parties… Nothing ever happens to them - yet if it was a normal human they'd get jailed and fined.

So no need to tell you what my thoughts on your 'rusted on' are…

            • @Loot N Plunder: But if Labour do it its okay?

  • +2

So… you're going to stop the real-life consequences of online harassment/trolling by making people readily identifiable in real life from their online accounts?

This is going to end well.

And of course, the other reason this won't work:

Government attempts to prevent kids accessing porn have their problems. In 2008 Tom Wood, then 16, cracked a new $84 million internet porn filter in just over 30 minutes.

    • +3

Next, Government attempts to ban smart kids.

  • +3

Banning anonymous trolls is a laudable aim, but in practice the trolls will find other ways…

    • Yep.
      Steal/buy other peoples ID

  • +6

If you are asking if to continue to use OzBargain, I'd have to have some form of govt approved id, then no I'd close the account, mind you I don't have the finances to take advantage of 90% of the deals here and generally can find better doing my own research for the limited number of items I can afford/need

As for the major social media sites they should be banned closed and the ceo gaoled LOL they're just a waste of time

    • You could've afforded $100 off $100 on eBay, and no you didn't find that deal. 90% is a bit of a stretch.

  • +2

Seems kinda weird that they think the problem is people being anonymous. Didn't stop Andrew Laming getting stuck into his constituents and any session of Question Time has far more trolling than I've ever seen on social media outside of a Donald Trump tweet.

  • +4

Some people may steal other people’s ID to stay anonymous.

It also makes it easier to steal people’s IDs and larger pool for data for hackers to steal. How many websites are worse than ShopBack!

  • The bigger issue is how FB and other social media companies work!!

The AI that pushes engagement at ANY cost is a much bigger problem and causing massive problems globally. The AI is not ethical and manipulates you in ways you can't imagine. Do yourself a favour and watch "The social dilemma" to get some insight. It's crazy how they are allowed to do this and get away with it.

  • +2

How about just teaching people to ignore those who don't matter to you? Anonymous trolls, randoms using their real identity, JV, etc. People need to learn how to not get offended by people who are irrelevant in their lives.

  • Would be strange of the LNP to ban fake accounts - they rely on fake media, lies & misinformation for power.
Conservative voters are more likely to swallow rubbish than progressives. The science supports it

  • +3

If they want to track you down they already have the technology it’s just a scare tactic from a paralysed Government trying to distract from the real issues of the day.

    • I think they're saying that if everyone knew who you are, you'd think twice about posting something. More of a online public shaming?

      • I’m sure that’s what they would like. People say shit all the time in public places, even on t-shirts, so what’s the difference? Where would this lead to? The Social Credit system in China? It’s ridiculous.

    • They already know enough about you to do anything they want.. everything Gov co is linked - they know where you go shopping and all.

  • +1

The government can't throw you in a gulag if it doesn't know who you are! I'm fully in support of it under 1 condition, I get to implement my own idealogy and persecute political enemies a simple demand….60+ million dead the last time we all handed over the reigns to socialism/communism, let's go again, we can beat that record I'm sure!

    • 60+ million dead the last time we all handed over the reigns to socialism/communism, let's go again, we can beat that record I'm sure!

Gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers comrade.

  • Assuming VPNs don't work just fine to get around it then it would just be a really good excuse to stop wasting time on social media.

    • It's all a means to an end.

  • This is simply more vassal govt being TOLD to follow US Policy.
If they are so concerned, why is FB allowed to syphon our data. Then suddenly TicTok is the ogre of the world.
This vassal govt, ran by a foreign head of state, conforming to US Policy, is getting being the joke.

  • So Trump is still living rent free in all leftys heads? Interesting.

If they want to control something, start with enforcing all of the current laws.
