Selling on Gumtree - Warranty Question

I used a BCF gift card I won (through an OzBargain competition!) to purchase camp gear for my Dad as a birthday gift, and two items he already had. He is selling them at half price (brand new in unopened box) and potential buyers are asking about warranty. I have the original receipt, and it's still within one month of purchase.

Can the warranty be used by the new buyer? Should I provide a photo of the receipt to the buyers, is that safe? I used a gift card so not sure how it works.

Thanks for any help.

Can the warranty be used by the new buyer?

Generally yes. If they have a valid receipt for the product then should be fine. Very few retailers or staff would care about checking original purchaser name and address.

Should I provide a photo of the receipt to the buyers, is that safe?

If you can provide the original receipt with the product sold, it would be fair. Just blur/cut out any personal information if you wish.

Gift card purchase only comes into play if they get a refund later on but that's the buyer's problem, not yours.

    • So I could take a photo of the original receipt, cross out / blur the personal info and the items that are being kept, and text or email that to the new buyer? Thanks for your help

      • What personal info could possibly be on the receipt that the potential buyer wouldn't know???

If it’s within a month of purchase why don’t you return the items to BCF for a full refund?

    • Can I do that with a gift card? Sorry I'm naive with gift cards! I'll tell my Dad, he may prefer that and then can choose other items

      • Wasn't sure also because I went over the amount of the card and paid some extra myself.

It should be fine, they will likely refund it as a gift card. Your best bet is to ring the store you purchased from and ask them what the procedure is for least hassle with the return.

yes, BCF are pretty cool with there refunds!

I've always sold all second hand goods as no warranty. Some electronic suppliers especially do not transfer warranty if they're being particularly painful.

    • I think people ask about the warranty as the two items are still in the original box unopened. It does seem easier to just say no warranty

      • If its heaps cheaper than brand new i think its to be expected. If it's close to rrp then no warranty is a horrible deal?

i would make it known that while you will provide the proof of purchase, once the transaction is finalised, you have no responsibility. I bet some idiot will take it camping, and then try and return it and when they don't accept it, they'll blame you

i always blacked out my name and address by thick marker and then make photocopy of the invoice and give to the buyer

Yep and make sure to meet anywhere except your place of residence. The only time I had an exception to this was when I was trying to get rid of a broken double door fridge on a second storey. Had 4 real sus looking blokes rock up and I could see they were basically just casing my place.

What's something from BCF that is half price on Gumtree that I'm concerned about warranty? I can't think of anything except one of those expensive portable fridges.

Tell the buyers no and pay full price if they want warranty.

Be very wary of people asking about warranty as they may be wanting to scam you or the store.

  • Private sale has no warranty.

they are more then likely wanting receipt so they can take back themself, or they might have the same that is faulty and want to swap. Just be careful! I generally ignore those enquirers. However depending on the item it might be legit.

As you said its already half price brand new. If they want it, its a good deal, and most places like BCF will send away if they sell the item for warranty without a receipt anyway.
